Would have been better if he took the head guy on the raft with him, saying it's if he got shot in the back he'd drop it and kill him. Then let him row back after they got away. Instead they just should have gotten shot in the back.

Is nobody going to talk about how he was firing the bolt action rifle like it was a semi-automatic with a magazine full of rounds?
iharrup (4 months ago)
it IS a semi-auto with 10-round magazine, known as the SKS.

Thanks for the like! This project is still in the works for me, I intend to make it a feature film when I can get a budget for it

Ok, likable film, but here are some things to consider: after surviving the attempted capture and/or murder by the slavers no way would he leave the pistol in their possession, nor would he give them the shovel - both are trade goods as well as weapons. Killing the men and adding the woman to the slave coffle are the only pro-survival options. Then when he freed them the other women could decide what to do about the slaver woman. The ferry scenario was also not very survivable. A better option that puts the short girl at less risk of rape and/or death would have been to surreptitiously scout the camp and either steal the raft at night when they were all drunk/sleeping, or attack the camp, also at night, with the functional grenade and picked up firearms. As it was written I kept expecting the lead ferryman to just kill our 'hero' and take his gear and the girl.

Pretty good movie, except for the part where the Wanderer leaves the girl to be raped by at least one of the bad guys @ 7:37 (after promising her that she "wasn't for sale"), then she somehow doesn't seem to mind, or lose any trust for him. Also, people would probably run out of bullets before they run out of shoes. :)

Great direction and production.....The scene where he rescues the oddly good haired L.A slave chicks was a bit confusing, but ok ok.....It work...keep at it, this is the real deal..... Okay, slight complaints....Leader of bad guys has a very high voice, if he's from L.A, I'm guessing West L.A.......Nah, just kidding.....

The acting was a little off at some points, but the overall colour scheme of the short was great. The two main actors were good, and the quality of the film was good. The choices of shots were very nice, mighty impressed, and made up for some of the acting. Good short, to bad it was a teaser, would like to know the rest.
iharrup (1 year ago)
Thanks very much! I'm working to get the feature made!
Patrick Holt (1 year ago)
Nobody wants to be that dirty, and there's no need when you're by the river. Less is more. All you need is the clothes being grunged up around the collars and cuffs, and greasy hair. People wash their faces and hands even when they don't wash anything else. The simplest, most universal and ancient technology used by man is the damp cloth.
Jenny Warren (11 months ago)
I am not a professional, but I appreciate the realism of the dirty faces. In a post apocalyptic world, the importance put on personal hygiene in a survival situation would depend on the situation.
iharrup (1 year ago)
I do appreciate the observation!
dgwachtel (1 year ago)
Good acting, directing, costumes, plot etc. What's not to like. Well done. The actress reminds me of a young Summer Glau. You hit the jackpot with her. The lead actor was no slouch either. The grenade thing was a mistake. If I were one of the bad guys I would have just shot at least the guy when they were out of blast range. A better idea would have been to take the leader on the raft and make him swim back - or something like that. Hope you are proceeding with the feature. If it is as good this short, it will be well worth watching. It might also be suitable for a TV series. Anyway, all the best and good luck. - Dave

Question; Just because they have grenades, why wouldn't they shoot them as soon as they walked away or before they got to close... I am left without suspension of disbelief because of this detail. Other than that, I like it. Make it happen as a movie.

Excellent film! The story kept me watching although I didn't plan on doing so. The acting was also good and convinced me. Cinematography was great with vivid scenes my only criticism was that the cgi on the gun flashes was exaggerated, wish it was balanced and more realistic. I presume the film is set in a place where there's only white people. Excellent film though, id buy it.
iharrup (1 year ago)
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoy it! I do have friends of all colors, but I was hesitant to put them in chains...
kirk bruce (1 year ago)
Although this is good for a short film, I do have some issues with it. 1st: Post-Apocalyptic=stealth, quiet, preparation, covert. Walking around in chains is bound to be heard & is a sure give-away when trying to approach someone silently (use a rope). 2nd: the action of the fight was confusing. Sure she shot the wrong guy, but right after they seemed to have given up (what’s with that). 3rd: the small tents to the left by the river when they first approach look brand new. How long has this story/struggle been going on? I still like the film, just wanted to post a few things to look for in film 2.
iharrup (1 year ago)
The full length feature film, when it has the right budget, will address all your points. Good observations, thanks for the input!
Lorne Schalm (1 year ago)
Nice to see one of these shorts that didn't have a depressing ending thanks.
iharrup (1 year ago)
You are very welcome! I personally prefer to write endings of hope and redemption - of course the characters must endure horrific trials to get there!
Brian Damage (1 year ago)
Er... what? I enjoyed this but too much made little sense. Why would the Wanderer risk leaving the girl with the gang by the river? Not sure she'd be so happy to see him. The whole encounter was unnecessary - if he can sneak into camp he could as easily sneak the boat away without all the risk to both of them. Worse was the bluff with the grenades. You really think after the Wanderer killed three of your crew you'd let him happily paddle away with the girl? No, you'd shoot him in the back now that they are out of grenade blast range. Too many holes makes even good ideas sink.
iharrup (1 year ago)
Thank you so much! When the feature length comes out, I promise the plot holes will be well dealt with!
Brian Damage (1 year ago)
I thought the acting and the directing were definitely good and the premise is certainly interesting. Best of luck!

I liked this. Certainly it's got potential. Much of the credit however goes to the two lead actors, particularly the young woman, who is quite remarkable. If you develop this further I hope you will cast her again.

Common Sense Isn't (1 year ago)
That was fun! Thanks! I especially liked the two main characters and the vibe you set up between them. The little details were good too as someone else pointed out. The plotting needs significant work, because the fight with the slavers made no sense, and leaving the girl with the thugs to be gang raped is not going to produce the smiling young lady sitting on the grass by her former lock and chain at the end. It might be better if they don't hook up romantically; a little URST can go a long way in driving a plot. Like most movies, you need three acts, like maybe: (1) forming the partnership, (2) the preparations and journey, and (3) completing the mission. The easiest way to create that same vibe would be for him to simply buy her at a slave market and hand her the key right away - no strings attached. Then he needs to come up with a good reason for her to go with him (if there were genuinely no strings attached). Maybe they have to find and liberate her kid sister. Maybe he has skills she wants/needs to take care of herself (no one seems safe alone in that setting). You could also have fun with him interviewing different "candidates" at the market. Presumably he needs more than just a short woman with a level head. If he needs her skills, even if he has to teach them to her, it's a real partnership. They could even pull a heist for some traveling money on their way out of town. Maybe there are some mini-quests or problems to solve along the way. Also, the idea of a fortress with little holes into the basement really doesn't leave him much to do in Act 3 - unless the fortress is really a mini-quest/problem along the way to the real main destination. Another thing that might help, is keeping a wry sense of the absurd lurking in the background. A great example of this sort of thing is the original "Conan the Barbarian" with Arnold Schwarzenegger (ca. 1980 before he was a big action star). Not a great movie, but they did the not taking themselves too seriously part really well without getting silly the way too many fantasy films do. My $0.02 FWIW. Good luck!
iharrup (1 year ago)

Dirk Frey (1 year ago)
Great idea, decent execution. Realistic post-apocalypse costumes and behaviour. One thing that didn't pull off (perhaps due to the short format) was the fights. The river crossing conflict didn't make much sense to me. They could've been shot getting on the raft. Perhaps less guns and more knife-fighting would work better.
iharrup (1 year ago)
In cases like that I go with style over realism; it's hard to guess how people will actually live in that kind of environment, so a few things are up to creativity. In this, chains on necks are like a slave brand of sorts, though it could be simpler to just brand them haha
Dirk Frey (1 year ago)
Yeah... everyone in the post-apocalypse seems to run around with an arsenal of guns... my guess is people would go with knives, bows, spears etc. Bullets run out and make noise, easier to be located. Another thing though.... the slave-girls with the chains. Personally I reckon the chains should be more of a hindrance. Like chain to each other, or tie the neck to the hands or something like that. Just a thought.
iharrup (1 year ago)
Fights are the hardest thing for amateur filmmakers to pull off; without stunt training, it's hard to make them look right. So you got me there, but that's an interesting thought: knife fights. Perhaps in the feature length version, there will be more of those... Thanks for your comment, glad you like the other aspects of it!
jmd555555 (1 year ago)
Once again very well filmed and acted. This one benefits from a good musical soundtrack and another redemptive ending - excellent. Keep up the good work you are obviously naturally talented as a film maker.

iharrup (1 year ago)
If you can find any anorexic actors riddled with scurvy, rickets, or other maladies associated with malnutrition who can still stand on their feet, let me know.
Jacob Robert Desio (1 year ago)
I liked the cinematography but I found myself hating the main character, his morals dont make sense and I didnt see him change at all during the film. I don't understand why he would let the slavers go after they tried to kill him he lets that girl get raped... There were other parts that I didn't understand or seemed like mistakes but maybe I missed the point - the part where he uses a grenade but at the end says that grenades haven't worked for a decade? The part where he is shooting the rifle behind the car you can see the bolt isnt moving completely and no shells are discharged (on any of the guns) - just a little tweak in editing on the next film. Overall it was really fantastic getting to see the world you put together and your interpretation of the end. Thank you for sharing and keep up the great work!
iharrup (1 year ago)
I appreciate your comments on this - he is a mysterious man in a world without rules, but I agree that things should make sense. We tried some After Effects with shell discharge and the bolt moving, some of the shots didn't work as well as others. We have since gotten better, but as this project is almost two years old we're going to just make the next project better. Thanks again! The intent is to make a feature film, the screenplay has been written and it is being shopped around.

all in all, a good film. I thought it was a little unrealistic when they got in the raft and the thugs just let them go.

axe609 (1 year ago)
I liked it. I would say you need to do some thinking on the logic of actions and reality of things. Also, find a friend who understands firearms or has military experience for the firearms scenes (I am assuming these people are implied to have ever held and used a gun before.) I fully understand how it is with limited productions, however a few more realistic actions can hide a lot of limitations. Keep at it
iharrup (1 year ago)
Thank you for liking it; in the two years since making this, the full length script has gone under numerous rewrites that hopefully address the logic and reality in a satisfactory fashion. When I direct the full length, no expense will be spared ;)
