Get your site online as cheap and quick as possible! Tons of people have asked me "how do I get my site online"? And here's how.
I recommend HostGator (http://bit.ly/1UCHuf4), since they have the best customer service as well as the best price. For $6/mo, you get unlimited domains/websites, so if you're building websites for other people, you can bill them monthly and not have any expenses increase.
All you need is a
Domain Name: $12/yr
I recommend HostGator (http://bit.ly/1UCHuf4)
Free FTP Program:
I recommend Cyberduck (http://cyberduck.io/)
We're going to get a webhost & domain, open an FTP connection to it, upload our files to our webhost, and then we're done!

I tried hostgator like 5 years ago, really bad experience, and no the customer service was not good. Have not had any reason to give them another chance. Enjoy your affiliate referral payments though for recommending them...
I could not find the www folder
so by mistake I entered to the public_html folder and deleted all its files except cgi.bin
the I created a new folder called www and upload files to it but when tried to access server_ip/~username it shows me error 404 page not found
Any help pleaaase ??
4:35 you can't connect any other way? Do you have to use a 3rd party ftp? Can this be done natively on win10 w/ git-bash? Can it be done in the browser?
I understand your example of why you're using cyberduck because of propagation (it's kind of similar when using github pages)
But can you just upload files via command line ?
Idk I'm having trouble understanding the WHY and HOW of uploading files via ftp, instead of just doing in the normal way (given you're not using the control panel because it hasn't been propagated yet)

Hi! Quick question: I just registered with Hostgator and uploaded all my files using Filezilla. Whenever I tried the IPEXAMPLE/~USERNAME/ it gave me an error 404. Same thing with my actual domain. Is there something wrong? Or do I just need to wait?
Yes! But if you are a newbie and want to put your site online just for fun, you can try some free domains like .tk, .ml, .ga etc you can get these domains at http://www.freenom.com and for free hosting, I recommend https://infinityfree.net/ you can get a free domain (sitename.rf.gd) too at infinityfree. Enjoy :D
Thanks for the video, this was exactly what I was looking for. I have some questions tho, does the server get lag or some kind of delay, or any issue according to the number of websites I host? Is there a max number of web pages I can host with the baby plan?
I'm getting a bunch of spam calls from "web designers". I don't know if this was a problem 3 years ago, when this video was made, but I'm getting spam emails, calls and texts. Please make an updated video, or a solution to avoid these problems for others in the future.
Yes, for sure. Their shared and cloud hosting can support PHP and Ruby on Rails, their VPS and dedicated server can support Node.js, Java or any other backend technology as you essentially own a server all to yourself.
You don't have to but it will be a a lot easier. But you can just use the File Manager in your hostgator cpanel. However, if you do so there are file size restrictions for uploading. Also you can't transfer a folder (you know, full of files - which would make things quick and simple) you have to do one file at a time... Lastly, I recommend using SFTP (not plain old FTP).
Github Pages is completely free but I believe you can only host static sites on there. You will still have to purchase a domain name and stuff (for example, if you want a custom URL other than <username>.github.io/<repo name>) but it will be hosted on Github for free. You can get 1 project site and unlimited user/organization sites. I think it's a good place to host stuff when you're starting/learning since you don't wanna spend money on a site that you might not even continue maintenance on.
so i did everything as instructed in the video. but when i do the step of pasting the server/~username, it just takes me to a 404 error page. what might i be doing wrong, and how can i fix it? could it be because i used a sass preprocessor (prepros) app?

As a child, there was a portrait in our family home in Paris that I always loved. Today, it’s known as Maya with Doll – but to me it was just a portrait of my mother, albeit a remarkable one. “Your grandfather was a painter,” she would say, whenever the subject of the canvas, one of many that hung around the house, came up in discussion. It was only when I began school, and whispers about my heritage started to follow me, that I realised what an understatement that was. My grandfather was far more than a painter. He was the defining figure of 20th-century art – and, as I would learn later from years of academic study, a true genius. It was a revelation that would shape the course of my life in many ways. When Picasso died – in 1973, the year before I was born – he left behind 45,000 works, not to mention personal objects and correspondence.
