Are you being suckered by TripAdvisor's domination of Google results? The behemoth of the travel industry can be one of the best - or worst - tools around. Hi there! I don't have much experience with travel and I am saving up to do so. I will have to be budget conscious. I really appreciate your information. I have subscribed to your channel and I hope that When I am ready to travel, perhaps I could ask you for some tips. Thank you!

TripAdvisore and Trivago operate the same way. By all means use TripAdvisor and Trivago to find the hotel you want but DO NOT BOOK THROUGH THEM ON LINE, instead call the Hotel direct and they will offer the room to you for the same or CHEAPER price because they do not have to pay a commission to TripAdvisor or Trivago. By doing this you help support small family business and keep the buck here, not in some overseas multimillionaires bank account.
Cool

Good points. I always include photos to prove that my review is legit. And for restaurant reviews, I post a photo of my receipt.

Seems that TA was way better years ago. Restaurant now on top sucks. Before where great. Any other sites that where like trip advisor years back? Thank you

Hi everyone!,travelling to jamaica soon ?,want to learn our dialect so interactions can be easier, leave me a message we have low fees and customer satisfaction is guaranteed.

Yes, it took me awhile to catch on to the fact that when Trip Advisor said there were "no rooms available" in all the other possible places to stay in this area for the dates I had chosen, they meant "no rooms left on booking.com, etc.". And I never thought of changing to the local language for restaurant reviews. I miss the old days at TripAdvisor when it was all suggestions and reviews for travelers mostly generated by travelers. For awhile I quit using it and doing reviews. However, I've come back because once one wades through all the "best" lists and down to the actual ratings, one can find fantastic local suggestions and information about almost any location in the world. And by reviewing a place, I might encourage someone else to share in my good experience. It's a way to say thank you!

I am sorry for posting a comment to your channel but it's not the same thing they way you think the TripAdvisor is...

Hi there! We got scam by TripAdvisor... we booked an apartment recently, they deducted the payment from our card then the owner declined the booking request. The money didn't get credit back to our card. They allowed people to booked apartments but it's not available they just took the money...
robinparisi (1 year ago)
Loved this and, although I knew some of these tips, definitely learned enough to quit avoiding TripAdvisor. This was my first look at your videos (though I used to read you in the Times). I am looking forward to watching more! Oh, and btw, I really appreciate the editing and “get to the point” approach.

A year ago I read an article relating that the owner of TripAdvisor had been charged with defrauding travelers overseas by booking lodging and not actually supplying it. I immediately dropped my membership, dropped my reviews (I was in the top 1% by number and have used the site very little since then. I will not be party to a crook!)

Bem legal o canal.

Oh, what is also very helpful is to look at the photos taken by the guests! They really show you if there are dusty lampshades, mouldy bathrooms and dirty floors, it's great to see how well the hotel is mantained. I also like to keep track of how old the review is, because a review that's older than 2 years might not reflect the actual state of the hotel (for better or for worse), some hotels go through renovations and staff change so all bad reviews from 2015 could be irrelevant by now!

Excellent tips. I always search hotels and restaurants in TripAdvisor. In July I intend to Go to Santiago in Chile. So I AM doing a lot of searching about accomodation in the last days.

The Seth's vocabulary is a little complicated for me, even more because of the speed of the speech. In the normal videos I watch, I see 8~12 words on average. But on the Seth's videos I see kind of 14~20!
Globally Curious (1 year ago)
Hahahaha well I am really just speaking the way I do on Amigo Gringo, but in English. I hope the subtitles in English and Portuguese help!
Lucas Prestes (1 year ago)
Huh, very interesting tips Seth, never knew the rating on trip advisor changes based on language! Also, I don't use trip advisor for hotels, normally I use booking, but never paid attention if there was some sorting there beneficial to the site. Will pay more attention next time!

Watch out, on booking they also favor the hotels that pay them extra. Always re-sort!

Seth, congratulations on your new channel! I think produce videos about worldwide travel was a good decision that you did, and now, making videos in the english language, you can expand your potencial public, and maybe receive a bit more money per view from youtube (as you said brazilian youtube doesn't pay much as american youtube). Honnestly, I wish you succeed with this new projet! I began to watch yours "Amigo Gringo" videos in 2015, I guess, and I always noticed the passion that you put in your work, and I'm sure that you'll have the same passion in this new channel! Keep producing your high quality videos that everything will work out! Best regards!

DON'T DO IT! This video is really just for people who already use it. You can live without it.

Rose, I'm speaking for an American audience, so I'm speaking at my normal speed! Turn on the English captions to help you!

Hi Seth! Congrats on you new channel! A ideia for your next videos here: tips for travellers who live in countrys where the coin vallue is low. I think it would be usefull to many people, like the south americans. Wish success to your new channel. Compliments from the capital of butecos and de feijão tropeiro's pizza land! Vou escrever em português caso o inglês tenha ficado confuso! Oi 7! (Belo Horizonte - MG❤)

Oh my Seth! I'm glad I have been using the same tricks as you! Thanks for posting
Globally Curious (1 year ago)
We're both geniuses!
I always take heed to the facts written on the reviews. At the same time, I try to ignore when someone is too much full of its own opinion, like when people say: "You have to go there, and you have to go only at that time and you have to eat that only thing and buy that very same stuff I bought". It should be easy, but some people can't just say: "I went there, I went at that time [etc.] and I liked it. Maybe you will like it too. But feel free to try something else." Those "have to" bother me a lot. For exemple, I went to the Corcovado (in Rio de Janeiro) two times and took the train to go up. One day someone told me: "If you didn't went up using the private vans, you never went to the Corcovado." So I answer: "Ok, then. I never went to the Corcovado two times."
Globally Curious (1 year ago)
Yes, great point about the attitudes of some people who write reviews on TripAdvisor.
Raquel Miranda (1 year ago)
Great video!! Weird to listen to you speaking English, though. :)
Globally Curious (1 year ago)
I'm used to it. 😂

Another tip is to check the TripAdvisor's forum. Just Google for example "Paris TripAdvisor forum" and there you'll read a lot of real questions and real trip reports and then you'll be able to judge for yourself. You can also try to read negative reviews and see what exactly people are unhappy about. A few years ago, when I was planning my trip to Santorini, I remember some negative review of a hotel and in the description the reviewer seemed to be upset and disappointed at the amount of steps he/she had to go down and climb to and from the hotel. Well, stairs is not a problem for me (especially not in Santorini!) so that opinion was not really relevant for me :)
Bianca Machado (1 year ago)
Ugh I've seen SO MANY bad comments about hotel breakfast options! Which are usually great btw, you don't need 10 types of fruits and 5 types of cheese to be happy in the morning. I just disregard all those comments.
Globally Curious (1 year ago)
Completely agree about the forum. I will have a LOT more to say about tripadvisor and I will use this! And your Santorini example is PERFECT for looking for facts, not opinions.

I really wish I was inspired to travel more because your TripAdvisor hacks seem like they’d actually help me get the most out of the site. I’m filing this wisdom away just in case there’s a sudden uptick in my wanderlust.

Hi Seth! I started using trip advisor when it did not sell anything, and I agree with you that they changed a little bit, you should use it wisely. I keep using it, mostly for hotels, not so much for attractions. I like to read the user's experience about the hotel, like rooms' size, if it's a noisy area, if the beds are ok, if the breakfast is good and of course any tip that a traveler has to share about it. (When I went to Japan everybody adviced about specifiyng non-smoker room otherwise the smell of the room would be annoying, so I took extra care about it). Of course, I like to share my own tips also! Oh, and I also look at the user's ranking and ignore the newbies. About the attractions, I like to read some blogs and get some tips about places and experiences that made the difference in their travel, like an unmissable place. And that's why I started watching Amigo Gringo's channel, to learn NY tips from the view of a New Yorker. 😃😉🇧🇷

Thanks Gabriela! By the way, watch out for cigarette odors in rooms in China, too.

Hi Seven, that was a great video! There are a lot of interesting and intelligent orientation. Merci e à la prochaine, see u,T+.

It's a good price if you pay in dollars. Brazilian people are screw up. The media class mostly, i think.
