You must understand, it is not something new to me. I lived in a house with 3 courtyards. Of course, it is a ran down house. It wasn't cosy.

The climate of kerala is such that it experiences rain through out the year except a very few months. This is because the onset of Southwest monsoon starts from Kerala in June which progresses to northern part of India. When the rain withdraw during October from most parts of India, again Kerala is the last state which gets the spell. The summer in Kerala is very hot due to high humidity. Due to this peculiar climate, the houses used to be with steep roofs to allow water to drain out easily. The "Naalukettu" architecture was primarily developed to allow ventilation & sunlight inside the houses. Brahmins who are priests, were rich in old times in Kerala who used to posses huge vast of lands which were normally sub-letted to small time Farmers and they used to enjoy a royal life style with the income from farming. Most of their houses were built in this "Naalukettu style of architecure". These house was called as "Mana". Moreover, there was a custom with Brahmins in those days where their ladies were not allowed to go out of their home freely hence most of their life time was spent inside the house hence these type of open courtyard was a bit of relief for them. Similar to "Naalukettu" which means knot of four, there was also "Yettu kettu" which means knot of eight. In Yettu Kettu design of architecture, two separate open courtyard is accommodated in the same house, which is separated by rooms (not connected). In old days this type of houses belonged to wealthy people. With the change of time, the glory and wealth of Brahmins deteriorated especially after the new land reform act passed by the first communist government of Kerala, where many acres of land belonged to Brahmins which were subletted to tenants for farming, became their own property, the popular slogan on those time was "land for the tillers. Government fixed the amount of land that can be kept with individuals. Plight of many Brahmin families became miserable and many of their houses gone to ruins and for many years this type of architecture was considered old fashioned especially when people of Kerala began to build modern concrete homes with the money which came from their employment in Gulf countries. Of late, this architecture has witnessed a big come back and is now considered royal and connected with culture of Kerala. Old houses were loaded with heavy wood work especially of Teak wood hence making them today is costly affair.
