Free Drawing Lessons - The Secret of Drawing. For more free art lessons visit http://www.artlessonsonline.com.au Hi I’m Murray Charteris and you are watching Art Lessons Online. I’ve heard many people ask…. what is the secret of drawing? Many people think that its hand eye coordination? What about you? Do you think that being able to control the movements of your hand to precise spots on the page is the secret? Well drawing certainly requires that you can do that…but that part isn’t as hard as you might think. We do it almost everyday whenever we write. We also used to do it all the time as a kid, connecting the dots in those dot to dot colouring books. You would be surprised at how much control you already have with a pencil. Try drawing a line between 2 dots on a page and you’ll see, its not that hard. In the introduction course we will be working on some exercises to improve that coordination. But that’s not the secret to drawing. So if that’s not the secret to drawing then what else could it be? What about practice? Do you think that might be it? Artists definitely need lots and lots of practice and the more practice you get, the better you get, right? True but some people practice and practice all they can, but still can’t draw in the end. Why? Well a lot of that also has to do with practicing the right kind of exercises. Like anything in life we need to know how to do something before we practice it, otherwise we end up practicing things that aren’t right and get ourselves into bad habits. The introduction course will show you exactly how you should be practising to keep getting better and better at drawing. Yes, it’s important but it’s still not the secret of drawing. So what else could it be? Could it be naturally born talent? Do you think that you have to be born with the skill to be able to do it? You know what? Nobody is born with the skill. That’s right, we don’t automatically know how to draw. It is a skill that is developed over time. Now some people develop those skills quite quickly, especially if they have gone to art classes or are lucky enough to have someone help them, to teach them and provide enough encouragement for those skills to be nurtured. Other people take a lot longer to develop the skills of drawing, and most people give up before they even get to the stage of developing the skills to a satisfactory level. Perhaps that might be you? No, natural talent isn’t the secret of drawing either. So far we’ve established…. we need to develop good hand-eye coordination, we need to get as much practice as we can to develop our drawing skills so that they keep getting better…and natural talent only plays a small role in the secret of drawing. So what else is there, what is stopping us from drawing now? Well, Even though we might have enough pencil control, we really tend to get unstuck with knowing exactly what shape to draw. What is the real shape of the object and how is that shape defined? When we start to make marks on the paper, how do we know exactly where those marks should be drawn? Well now we are starting to see the problem. The problem isn’t the control of our hand, its our brain not telling us what we should be drawing. Even if we are trying to copy a shape, there’s a part of our brain that thinks it knows best and tells us what the shape is. The problem is that that part of our brain isn’t the visual part, so it relies on memory and logic to work out what the shape should look like when we draw it. Well… the memory and logic parts of our brain aren’t good at drawing either. This part of our brain is nearly always wrong when it comes to drawing. Now we are getting closer to the secret… When we draw an object, we need to switch off that part of the brain that is leading us astray. We need to learn to use a different part of our brain to work out what we should be drawing. We need to learn to make judgements based on Visual clues rather than memory and logic. We need to learn to follow what we are seeing so that we can turn that into a drawing. So what is the secret of drawing?

Secrets of Drawing Cartoons | Drawing Tips

04:06
Watch more How to Draw & Illustrate videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501655-Secrets-of-Drawing-Cartoons-Drawing-Tips So now we're going to talk about secrets of drawing cartoon characters. And in another video I created this quick cartoon elephant, but I didn't just draw him straight out, I constructed him from simple shapes in three dimensional space. So now I've got this character, who for me, exists in this kind of three dimensional head space. So now I can put him in a bunch of different poses and I can make him do stuff and he'll always come out looking like, kind of, the same character. So let's get him up on his feet and make him do something completely ridiculous and have him dance. It's very important in animation to start with really simple shapes because you're going to have to draw these characters over and over many, many times. And you want to start with simple shapes that are easy to remember and keep consistent. I'm going to start by drawing an oval shape for his head and let's get a lot of. We see in the center line that helps me determine where his face his going to be. And let's get a lot of, energy into this pose. So I'm going to, before I even draw the oval for his body I'm actually going to push him a little out of shape. And I'm going to sort of arch his back and try to get a lot of action into this pose. So even though I constructed his body out of an oval I don't need to keep it a perfectly oval shape. I can, sort of, bend it out of shape and make it into a kind of bean. When I was creating his arms and legs the first thing I figured out was where they would attach to that oval shape that makes his body. The first thing I want to do is I'm going to actually draw the places where his arms and legs attach. I want to raise one leg up so I'm going to make that higher and I'm going to make the other leg lower and I'm going to make the leg he's standing on. He's a big heavy elephant and he's putting all his weight on one leg and I really want to give you a sense that he's pushing down on that leg. So I am actually going to squash that leg down a bit. Let's kick that leg up a little higher, actually. And again while I am drawing this I am keeping my eye on my original model because I want to make sure I get the arms about the right thickness so he still looks like the same character. There's a circle in the front of his head that creates the point where the trunk attaches so I am going to draw that same circle again. To make room for a mouth I want to push those tusks up a little higher. Now I'm going to add the eyes and I'm going to look at where the eyes, where do the eyes in relation to the trunk, how far away they are from that circle where his trunk attaches, and also how much distance there is between his two eyes. Animation artists are constantly doing this sort of thing where we're creating construction lines between the different features of a persons face so that we can make sure that all this stuff stays consistent. I want to really make his ears gone wild because that will help create the feeling that he's moving. And now I'm just going to tighten that up with some black pencil. And there he is, now he's dancing. And that should give you a very quick, crash course in secrets of drawing cartoon characters.

Now, if you're a beginning artists whose watching this video, I'm betting that you probably struggles with a few things in figure drawing. You probably have a very hard time keeping your figures in proportion, creating dynamic poses, and making your figures look realistic. If any of those describes you, then you're at the right place! In this lesson series, we're going address all those issues and show you a unique approach to learning figure drawing that will help you overcome many of these challenges. After getting a TON of questions from subscribers and seeing so many people struggle in this area, I decided to set out to discover the root of the problem - more importantly - what we can do about it. So I interviewed over a dozen figure drawing experts and professional artists and asked them, "What is the number one key to mastering figure drawing?" Each had their own style and take on the question. But there seemed to be a recurring patten among all their answers. They all seem to agree that the biggest mistake that a beginning figure drawing artist makes is to tackle the subject, without properly learning the fundamentals. In other words, they rush to drawing the figure, without first developing certain key skills that are critical to success. And it's this unstructured approach that leads to many of the problems beginners experience. To illustrate this better, let me tell you the story of my co-instructor Michael. Now Michael is a very accomplished professional artist and teacher now. But when he was first starting out, Michael was just an average person like you and me. He knew he wanted to master figure drawing... and do it in the fastest time possible. Eager to get started, he decided to skip learning some of the foundational skills (like proportion, perspective, gesture, and anatomy) and dive into drawing right away. He chose reference photos from magazines and comic books and drew as much as he could. He ran into problems here and there, but simple pushed through it with more practice. And sure enough, soon he started to see his drawing skills improve. Michael was feeling very good about himself. But then one day, when he decided to draw a figure from real life and from his own imagination, something very strange happened. He suddenly found that all his well hone skills seemed to disappeared. His drawing as a complete disaster! The proportions were way off. The figure look stiff and life-less. And there was absolutely no dimension to it. It just looked flat and cartoonish. It was as if all his hours of practice didn't even matter! Frustrated, Michael tried again. And again. And again! But after many failed attempts, he finally realized the truth. That all the key fundamental that he had skipped over - the ones that he thought was unimportant - had finally came back to bite him. It was like trying to build a house without first setting up the proper foundation. And so everything just went crumbling down. What he needed was to go back and build a solid foundation. And so he had to start all over again and develop all the skills that he had missed. Except this time, it was even harder that if he was a complete beginner... because he had to unlearn all the bad habits that he'd picked up. It took him a lot of work, but in the end, it all paid off. Now his drawings are better than ever.

The Secret to Drawing Well & more – Ep.13 Oil Painting Q&A with Mark Carder

If you have a question for me, post it in the comments below. I'll answer as many as I can in the next episode. Here are links to each question answered in this video: 00:05 — a lesson about drawing the three-dimensional world in two dimensions 07:48 — How did artists produce what you call "museum quality light" in the days before electricity? 09:32 — I'm a student at the University of Houston and the ventilation in our facilities does not allow for us to use regular oil paints, just water-mixable oils. Can I use the Geneva palette without ventilation, and if not, what are some colors from other manufacturers that are comparable to the Geneva colors? 11:05 — I like to do paint fine detail work and was wondering if I should make braced hardwood panels for their smooth surface, or should I stretch some fine tooth canvas? 12:42 — Can you talk about painting details? Like the peel of an orange? Do you use a small brush for that? 15:23 — In your video "How to Mix Colors with Oil Paint" you start with the darkest color and work your way up to the lightest color. In college my teachers told me to do the opposite. Can you elaborate on what you start with the darkest black first? 17:53 — Can I stain canvas for later use? Or is it better to just stain the one canvas I know I am going to use?

Car Design Drawings - Secrets of Drawing Wheels

09:51
This video covers the secrets of drawings wheels in car design drawings. For a free preview of our new 5 part course "Introduction to Automotive Design" click - https://www.udemy.com/introduction-to-automotive-design/learn/v4/overview  The video is presented by the Online Academy of Automotive Design. The Academy provides professional, live, one on one tutoring in how to draw cars for aspiring, young, high school age car designers. If your goal is to improve the quality of your car design drawings, check out https://www.howtodrawcars.net and sign up for a session. Car Design Drawings - Secrets of Drawing Better Wheels I've noticed a lot of the students in the How to Draw Cars tutoring program struggle with the drawing of wheels and tires, whether in the side view or in perspective views. A poorly drawn set of wheels and tires can ruin an otherwise excellent car design drawing so you want to make sure you know how to draw wheels and tires as best you can. This How to Draw Cars video features a demo on how to create better wheels in your car design drawings. There is a simple technique to help you create round circles and smooth ellipses. Of course the only real way to get better at drawing is to draw, a lot. And practicing your wheels and tires in both side and perspective views should be part of any aspiring car designers drawing routine. The video covers the two different way of drawing a wheel in perspective. The first is where the vertical axis is the long axis. The second is where the horizontal axis of the wheel is the long axis. Each is view dependent and the video covers which to use when in your car design drawings. The materials used are: a 18 x 24 smooth newsprint paper pad and Prismacolor Premiere colored pencils. One of the most important things to take away from Secrets of Drawing Better Wheels video is how easy it is to draw wheels when you draw from your shoulder. As with developing line quality to draw you cars, the same skills come into play when you draw wheels. It’s also impossible to draw a clean, aesthetically pleasing wheel by drawing from your hand. You need to move your whole arm to get the gesture of the circle or ellipse in one motion. Practice as shown in the video to master this skill. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for watching

The perspective itself fights the wedge shape of many car designs so the car wants to get bigger as it goes back in space and the perspective wants to make it smaller. Tough stuff. The video covers how to build a structure or scaffolding to insure your perspective is correct. Then shows how to build wheels within that structure to insure your wheels and body relate. Putting an interior in your drawing as well as making the car look solid and grounded are also techniques covered in the video. This video was sponsored by Mark P from the UK. Mark wanted his How to Draw Cars tutoring session to be shared on Youtube. Mark came to the How to Draw Cars site and paid for the lesson then asked if I could record the demonstration over his drawing showing him where he needs to improve and post it for everyone else to see. This was a very kind gesture. Luckily we wanted to do a video for the channel that focused on drawing a car in two point perspective and that’s just what Mark needed to improve. If you’d like to have your tutoring session recorded and posted on our channel, visit our site and send me an email. If you have an idea for a How to Draw Cars video, please email or let a note in the comments section. We want to get you drawing cars like a pro so the more you tell us the kind of car design drawing videos you are looking for, then better our videos will be. Be sure to subscribe to the channel. Thanks for watching.

Guide Lines: The Secret To Drawing Great Mandalas

05:05
Hi Guys! So I received this request to cover how to draw guide lines, so I figured I would do just that! As you guys may notice, I am using different editing software. While it is very nice, it comes with a price tag and a few glitches. I started use this instead of windows movie maker because after seeing how dark my new videos were coming out, I decided it was time to switch my editing software - wondershare filmora. Anywho, this video talks about why guide lines are important and how you can draw them to achieve great mandalas - or anything really! All you need is: Pencil Compass (Quality matters!) Ruler Eraser I hope you guys find this video helpful, and if you did please show the love!
