Well, if you haven’t consider yourself lucky. These naturally mummified bodies are well preserved, but very strange to look at. Cremation can also have some interesting variations. The Balinese treat the body as if it is sleeping before burning it inside a bull sarcophagus. In Bulgaria, a weird small town burial practice was discovered in which the bodies of towns people were cut in half and buried from the pelvis up. But that’s nothing compared to the hanging coffins you can find in parts of Asia, the space burial perfered by many in the tech sector, or the high tech burial trees which splice human DNA into a living memorial tree. Wonder where cremation diamonds, Aboriginal body exposure, plastination, Ifugao death chair, and the towers of silence fall on our list? Islamic burial rituals
People getting ready for a burial in common Islamic style, as per their traditional rituals. Funerals in Islam (called Janazah in Arabic) follow fairly specific rites, though they are subject to regional interpretation and variation in custom. In all cases, however, sharia (Islamic religious law) calls for burial of the body, preceded by a simple ritual involving bathing and shrouding the body, followed by salat (prayer). Cremation of the body is forbidden. Living with the dead in Indonesia - BBC News
Tradition and ritual - they form part of many important stages of our lives from birth until death, with ceremonies marking both the beginning and end of life. Death - in most cultures - is often seen as a physical end to our time in this world. But on one Indonesian region, that isn't the case. And the journey from death to burial can be a long one. Sahar Zand reports on the ancient death customs of the Torajan people. Her report contains graphic images which some viewers may find disturbing. It uses an incredible amount of resources, emits toxic pollutants into the air, and pumps the ground full of formaldehyde, which is known to cause cancer. It's also prohibitively expensive. The average cost of a modern funeral costs between $10,000 to $12,000. There are a number of greener options available though. Cremation uses less resources and requires less space than a traditional burial, but isn't perfect. There are more experimental methods on the horizon such as promession and alkaline hydrolysis. No matter which method we choose, it's clear that we need to reform how we bury the dead. Also be sure to read Mark Harris's excellent book about green burials http://www.gravematters.us

Here, Living With Dead Bodies for Weeks—Or Years—Is Tradition | National Geographic
On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the Torajan people believe that a person is not truly dead until water buffalo have been sacrificed at their funeral, serving as the vehicle to the afterlife. Until that time, the bodies are may be kept at the family's home for weeks, months or years and are fed and cared for as if they were alive. Some Torajans continue their relationship with the dead through a ma'nene' ceremony, a type of "second funeral" in which families bring out their ancestors every few years and change their clothes and clean their bodies and crypts. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe #NationalGeographic #Death #Indonesia About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Sky Burials: Tradition Becomes Controversial Tourist Attraction | Short Film Showcase
In the ancient practice of Tibetan sky burial, a human corpse is placed on a mountaintop to be eaten by birds of prey, most commonly vultures. The tradition, a sustainable burial method, symbolizes the impermanence of life for Buddhists. The ceremonies have recently begun to attract tourists, who take photographs and videos of these burials. In this excerpt from Vultures of Tibet, director Russell O. Bush explores the ethics that surround sky burial tourism. Vultures of Tibet: http://vulturesoftibet.com/ Russell O. Subscribe if you like it! A funeral is a ceremony connected with the burial, cremation, or interment of a corpse, or the burial (or equivalent) with the attendant observances.[1] Funerary customs comprise the complex of beliefs and practices used by a culture to remember and respect the dead, from interment, to various monuments, prayers, and rituals undertaken in their honor. Customs vary between cultures and religious groups. Common secular motivations for funerals include mourning the deceased, celebrating their life, and offering support and sympathy to the bereaved; additionally, funerals may have religious aspects that are intended to help the soul of the deceased reach the afterlife, resurrection or reincarnation. The funeral usually includes a ritual through which the corpse receives a final dispositon.[2] Depending on culture and religion, these can involve either the destruction of the body (for example, by cremation or sky burial) or its preservation (for example, by mummification or interment). Differing beliefs about cleanliness and the relationship between body and soul are reflected in funerary practices. A memorial service or celebration of life is a funerary ceremony that is performed without the remains of the deceased person.[3] The word funeral comes from the Latin funus, which had a variety of meanings, including the corpse and the funerary rites themselves. Funerary art is art produced in connection with burials, including many kinds of tombs, and objects specially made for burial like flowers with a corpse.

Dead People Who Totally Look Alive During The Weirdest Funerals
Some people want to be buried, others prefer cremation, while some wish to be frozen on ice in the hopes of a future resurrection. And then there are people who want their bodies set up to look alive at their funerals. Yes, it’s a thing. Much like the stuffed wild animal exhibits seen in a museum, certain funeral homes have developed special embalming techniques that allow them to pose your and friends and family members in any particular moment in time, whether it’s catching a cab, sitting on the toilet, or yelling at traffic from their car. While the practice may seem a bit dark, macabre, and life scarring, everyone grieves differently! - Elle Tharp -Source: https://www.ranker.com/list/bodies-set-up-to-look-alive-at-funerals/elle-tharp ****************************************************************************** -Music 1: Welcoming the Undead) Halloween/Horror Techno by: TeknoAXE -Music Download Link: http://teknoaxe.com/Link_Code_2.php?q=62 -Music 2: Alien Technology By: Machinimasound -Music Download Link: https://machinimasound.com/?s=alien+technology

5 Bizarre Burial Rituals - Halloween 2012
Check out 5 of the strangest burial rituals around the world. Here are the world's 5 most bizarre burial rituals. Number 5 - is the space burial. The cremated remains of the deceased are sent to space in small proportions ranging from 1 to 7 grams. There are a variety of options to choose from - the ashes can either be launched into Earth's orbit where it can remain from 10 to 240 years or for about $12,000, 1 gram of ashes can be sent to the moon or deep space. Number 4 - the sky burial. The burial is performed in some parts of Tibet. Three days following the death, the corpse is taken to a sacred burial ground which is often located at high altitudes away from the residential areas. The body is then cut into pieces and the body is allowed to be eaten by the vultures. Number 3 - the hanging coffins. The ancient Bo civilization of Southern China practiced the ritual of hanging coffins containing dead bodies from cliffs. Some of these coffins date back to 476 BC. Some were hung as high as 400 feet above the ground. Allegedly, the placement reflected a hierarchy - coffins placed higher indicated the social status of the deceased. Number 2 - Endocannibalism. Yes, you heard it right. Endocannibalism is a ritual in which the flesh of the deceased is consumed by the family and friends. It is a form of showing respect or hoping to gain wisdom from the dead. The ritual is practiced by some tribes in Papua New Guinea and Africa. Number 1 - is the Cryonics, a procedure which involves freezing the dead body in the hope of reviving them later as the technology develops. Under this process, the body of the deceased is soaked in a substance in order to prevent the formation of ice. It is then maintained at a temperature where the decomposition of the body stops. Which one appeals to you the most?

Kalash funeral Rare Footage And Burial Rituals
Kalash is a place out of this world. There are no doctors, no mobile phones, no newspapers and no tarmac roads. But they still look the happiest people on earth. They follow centuries-old traditions and customs and still send their women to secluded houses called ‘Bashali' during menstruation and child birth as they are considered impure. No one even touches them during this period. During a trip to Kalash Valley in Chitral, found out that the Kalash sing and dance around the bodies of their loved ones for two to three days before burying them in a coffin and offer a feast with a sacrifice of 30 to 40 goats to guests who come to celebrate (not mourn) the death. A Kalash becomes poorer if anybody dies in his family because he has to throw lavish feasts and sacrifice his goats. But the tradition continues. The Kalash's life revolves around their festivals throughout the year. Dancing, singing, brewing mulberry wine and following rituals and culture is their way of life. They take pride to be Kalash and do not want to change their primitive ways of living. But they do want education and health facilities in addition to jobs and better road access from their valleys to the outer world. The 40-year-old woman is among a growing number of Japanese taking a proactive approach to planning their funeral, sparking a booming death industry. Funeral in Indonesia
▶FULL DOCUMENTARIES | http://planetdoc.tv/playlist-full-documentaries ▶ Spanish video: http://planetdoc.tv/documental-un-funeral-en-indonesia These are the Sulawesi highlands, home of the former head-hunters known as toroja, which means “mountain men”. In the village of Kete on the funeral day of a distinguished noble. Three months after his body was embalmed, everything is ready. The deceased Mayanna was a pung, a wealthy local. The burial ceremony will be so sumptuous, though, that his family will be ruined economically. In order to pay for the over-the-top funeral they’ve had to sell good rice land and farm animals. Nevertheless, the extravagance of the ceremony will guaranty that the dead man will rejoin his ancestors in paradise. The goal is to “satisfy the deceased”, and if Mayanna is indeed content with his funeral, he will protect his family and bring them luck. At first the attendees don’t cry for the dead. It seems more like a party, and what a great time they’re having! Amidst the tumult the coffin is excitedly lifted up high. But at the sound of a gong the mood suddenly changes. Now no one is hiding their sorrow. On the contrary, they are openly grief-stricken. I don’t know if this is due to the loss of Mayanna or the economic ruin that has befallen them. Later the main event starts: The buffalo fight. This funeral dance is called Mabadong. The men dance as they hold onto each other’s little fingers, singing together in an intense lamentation. As at any good wake, there must be plenty of food. They all must fortify themselves for the hardest part of the burial, which is yet to come. The full coffin will be carried on the shoulders of the mourners into the forest and to the sacred stones of Rantepao. They’ve finally arrived. This mountain man has returned to the mountain in death. While his coffin is slid into its rocky niche, the officiator reads a Biblical prayer for the dead. A local artisan has produced a wooden sculpture called a tau-tau of the deceased Mayanna. For a family of such high prestige, the effigy will cost a fortune, five buffalos. Once the figure is ready, it is added to the other effigies on the balcony of statuary, from which numerous wooden figures of the deceased observe the scene

The Importance of Death Rituals (Shradh) | Sadhguru
During a conversation with Prasoon Joshi on Unraveling Death, Sadhguru answers a question on the importance of performing death rituals, or shradh. He explains the process in which the physical life energy, or prana, gradually leaves the body and how the actions of the living can impact the experience of the being. Sadhguru Talks @ In Conversation with the Mystic, Prasoon Joshi with Sadhguru, Mumbai, Mar 2014 **************************************** Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/the-importance-of-death-rituals-shraadh/ Questioner: Sadhguru Namaskar. I just wanted to know what is the importance of doing shradh (Last rites). Sadhguru: In the manifestation of life, the physical life there is – let me separate this. There is life and physical life for the sake of understanding. The physical life has manifested itself. The physical life energy which generally is referred to as pran or prana has five basic manifestations - there are ten but that’ll complicate – the five basic manifestations. These are called samana, prana, udana, apana and vyana. Within… After… When a person is declared… Let’s say if a doctor is observing and they declared that person at a particular moment that he is dead now, in the next twenty-one to twenty-four minutes samana will start exiting. That means samana is in charge of maintaining temperature in the body. First thing that’s happen… starts happening is body starts cooling down. Somewhere between forty-eight to sixty-four minutes prana exits. After that between six to twelve hours udana exists… exits. Till udana exits there are tantric processes with which we could revive the body, but once udana exits there is a… a micro, micro chance but that is an impractical chance except that it is impossible to revive the body once udana has existed, I mean exited. The next thing is apana – somewhere between eight to eighteen hours this exits. The vyana which is the preservative nature of prana will start exiting from beyond that - it can continue to exit up to eleven to fourteen days if it's a normal death. That is, somebody died of old age, with the feebleness of life they exited. For such a person between eleven to fourteen days certain processes will be happening in the body to show that there is some element of life like nails growing, hair… facial hair these kind of things can be noticed. If someone has died accidentally, or in other words, the life was vibrant and he died – not necessarily totally crushed kind of body – still the body is intact – that body, the reverberations of this life will continue somewhere between forty-eight to ninety days. So till that time there are things you can do for that life. What is the thing that you can do for that life? See, what has happened with death is your exp… your experience of death is that somebody is gone but the experience of that person is he’s exited the body. And simply because he’s exited the body you have no business with him - you cannot recognize him and if he comes back you will be terrified (Laughter). The people that you love, if they pop up there’ll be terror, not love (Laughs) because your relationship is ei… either with their body or with their conscious mind and emotion. These things have been left behind – the body has been left behind and the conscious intellect and the discerning mind has been left behind. Now in terms of mind it is just a bunch of information which has certain tendencies of its own – natural tendencies which are finding expression in a certain way. There is no discerning mind. Once there is no discerning mind, if you drop… if you put one drop of pleasantness into this mind which has no dis… discerning capability, no intellect, now this pleasantness will multiply a million fold. If you put a drop of unpleasantness, that unpleasantness will multiply a minion… million fold. It's like your child who doesn’t have the necessary discernment - he goes out to play - he doesn’t know when to come back. Till he’s exhausted and he can't do anymore, till then he wants to play because he has… he doesn’t have the necessary discernment – okay it's time to go.... Join Deep Look on Patreon NOW! https://www.patreon.com/deeplook They may be dressed in black, but crow funerals aren't the solemn events that we hold for our dead. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * It’s a common site in many parks and backyards: Crows squawking. But groups of the noisy black birds may not just be raising a fuss, scientists say. They may be holding a funeral. Kaeli Swift, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Washington’s Avian Conservation Lab in Seattle, is studying how crows learn about danger from each other and how they respond to seeing one of their own who has died. Unlike the majority of animals, crows react strongly to seeing a fellow member of their species has died, mobbing together and raising a ruckus. Only a few animals like whales, elephants and some primates, have such strong reactions. To study exactly what may be going on on, Swift developed an experiment that involved exposing local crows in Seattle neighborhoods to a dead taxidermied crow in order to study their reaction. “It’s really incredible,” she said. “They’re all around in the trees just staring at you and screaming at you.” Swift calls these events ‘crow funerals’ and they are the focus of her research. --- What do crows eat? Crows are omnivores so they’ll eat just about anything. In the wild they eat insects, carrion, eggs seeds and fruit. Crows that live around humans eat garbage. --- What’s the difference between crows and ravens? American crows and common ravens may look similar but ravens are larger with a more robust beak. When in flight, crow tail feathers are approximately the same length. Raven tail feathers spread out and look like a fan. Ravens also tend to emit a croaking sound compared to the caw of a crow. Ravens also tend to travel in pairs while crows tend to flock together in larger groups. Raven will sometimes prey on crows. --- Why do crows chase hawks? Crows, like animals whose young are preyed upon, mob together and harass dangerous predators like hawks in order to exclude them from an area and protect their offspring. Mobbing also teaches new generations of crows to identify predators. ---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science: https://www.kqed.org/science/1923458/youve-heard-of-a-murder-of-crows-how-about-a-crow-funeral/ ---+ For more information: Kaeli Swift’s Corvid Research website https://corvidresearch.blog/ University of Washington Avian Conservation Laboratory http://sefs.washington.edu/research.acl/ ---+ More Great Deep Look episodes: Why Do Tumbleweeds Tumble? | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dATZsuPdOnM Upside-Down Catfish Doesn't Care What You Think | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eurCBOJMrsE Take Two Leeches and Call Me in the Morning | Deep Look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-0SFWPLaII ---+ See some great videos and documentaries from PBS Digital Studios! Busy Gaza Morgue Performs Muslim Burial Rituals
In the morgue at a small Gaza hospital, the anguished cries of those who lost loved ones in Israeli airstrikes fell silent Thursday when Ahmed Jadallah began attending to the corpses, one by one, on his wooden work table. With swift, steady movements, Jadallah swaddled a toddler in a white burial shroud and later gently cleaned the soot-stained face of the child's father — Islamic rituals that momentarily reassured the grieving. Father and son had been killed earlier in the day, along with the child's grandparents and uncle, when an airstrike on an adjacent house sent debris flying into the family's living room. According to Palestinian health officials, nearly 790 Palestinians have been killed, including 190 children, and close to 5,000 wounded in more than two weeks of battle between Israel and Gaza's Hamas militants. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2014-07-24-ML--Palestinians-Dressing%20The%20Dead/id-d63e2b09afb447ce8860b2a6ad045143 http://www.wochit.com

Changing burial practices in Roman Egypt
30 BC to AD 300 By the time Egypt became part of the Roman Empire, it sburial traditions and religious beliefs were already thousands of years old. Egypt was incredibly influenced by classical culture, but in matters of death many people looked to the reassurance of traditional magic. Burials now focussed almost entirely on the body itself. Funerary objects like shabtis and canopic jars completely disappeared. Even coffins became rare. The most commonly used burial items were shrouds and either an Egyptian-style mummy mask or a classical-style portrait painted on a board placed over the face of a mummified person. Traditional style gilded mummy-masks were decorated with magical protective symbols and Egyptian gods. Classical portraiture sought to bring the dead back to life through its realism.
