Principle of buchholz relay Any fault occurring inside an oil immersed transformer is accompanied by decomposition of transformer oil into gases. Working of Buchholz relay Buchholz relays are protection equipment used in oil immersed transformers. It is used to sense the faults occurring in the transformer winding and core such as inter-turn faults, short circuits, earth faults, overheating of the core, oil leakage etc occurring inside a transformer. Basically, a Buchholz relay is an oil actuated relay. It gives an alarm or trips the input supply based on the level of oil inside it. It also responds quickly to the unusual oil flow from the transformer main tank to the oil conservator. We will look at what makes a test valid, and ways of ensuring that we are measuring what we claim to measure. We will also consider the impact of the CEFR and the rise of digital technology on testing practices in the 21st century. Finally, we will look at some of the pitfalls to avoid in item writing and test delivery, giving teachers clear principles to develop their own language assessment literacy. Thom Kiddle has worked at NILE since 2011, after moving back to the UK from Chile where he was head of academic research and educational technology at the Chilean-British University. He has previously worked in Portugal, the UK, Australia and Thailand in language teaching, teacher training and language assessment. He has a Master’s degree in Language Testing from Lancaster University and the Cambridge Delta, and his role at NILE involves strategic and organisational management, and training and consultancy in a range of areas including testing and assessment, learning technologies, materials development and language teaching methodology. Thom is also treasurer and founding director of AQUEDUTO – the Association for Quality Education and Training Online; webmaster for the Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group of IATEFL; and a member of the Eaquals Board of Trustees.

The profession of Civil engineer is considered as one of the well paid and respected as they are major contributors to the society. They must possess a very broad skill set, from cost accounting to geology. Many civil engineers have jobs that require a very hands-on role in construction, while others may have positions more heavily weighted toward supervisory and administrative skills. We can therefore see how important it is for Civil Engineers to possess certain qualities and skills. Here we are providing the 7 most important skills that civil engineers should have in order succeed. 1. Technical Skills A good Civil Engineer should have a level of Mathematics and Physics that allows for the identification and solving of engineering problems. Lets put it this way, if a Structural Engineer wasn't able to accurately work out how much weight is being distributed throughout a bridge, anyone wouldn't dare to be driving anywhere near that bridge. Civil Engineers also need to be skilled in design techniques and working with maps, drawings and models, as well as CAD software. They need to be able to predict any possible future problems and find solutions for them. 2. Project Management When problems arise, it is common for people involved in the project on all levels to look to the engineer for guidance and resolution. It is important that a Civil Engineer is able to step up to the task and manage a diverse team of professionals whilst maintaining the confidence of clients. 3. Leadership Skills Civil engineers carry a great deal of responsibility as they are ultimately in charge of the entire project’s design and implementation. They must be able to lead a diverse team of professionals, including surveyors, construction managers, technicians, contractors, architects, urban planners, transportation engineers and others, as well as maintain the confidence of governmental planning authorities. The effectiveness of the civil engineer’s leadership skills may be a significant determining factor in keeping a project on time and on budget. 4. Communication Skills In Civil Engineering - perhaps more so than other Engineering fields - the ability to communicate effectively is a highly sought after skill. Whether dealing with Management or a client, Engineers need to be able to clearly communicate ideas and give direction leaving no ambiguity. They must also be able to listen and benefit from the ideas of others in the team. 5. Creativity It could be said broadly that the role of Civil Engineers is applying Engineering principles to develop solutions within the built environment. More often than not, this requires a certain level of creativity. Engineers need to be able to innovate and improve on solutions. From finding ways to reduce CO2 emissions or making a trampoline bridge, creativity is key. 6. Visualization The ability to imagine what something will look like when it’s finished and visualize how complex components will come together is one of the most important skills a civil engineer can have. Visualization skills must be flexible and dynamic in order to identify and resolve issues before they can become problems. Because there are so many component parts to large-scale projects, civil engineers must be able to envision how the interrelationships change when one or more individual aspects are changed. 7. Critical Thinking Civil Engineers often face complex problems and need to find efficient solutions for them. They need to be able to assess the pros and cons of all possible solutions, and they need to be decisive in order to choose the best one. Civil Engineers generally require a very broad skill set and these list is in no way exhaustive but these 7 were what we saw to be the most important skills for a Civil Engineer. How inverters work. In this video we take a look at how an inverter works to convert direct current (DC) into Alternating current (AC). Inverters are used increasingly throughout industry as well as building services HVAC systems to achieve precise control of AC induction motors connected to AHU fans, compressors pumps etc. Inverters are also used within photovoltaic arrays to provide AC power for use in homes and buildings. In this video we start at the basics to understand the difference between AC and DC power and then look at a simplified example before moving onto an advanced pulse width modulation (PWM) example to see how the load experiences and AC supply from a DC source by converting the direct current into a sine wave. Thinking natural disasters. When you think of natural disasters, there are several that come to mind. You have earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes. But, if I show you marshmallows, and I show you toothpicks, and tell you that we’re about to do an experiment that has to do with natural disasters, you’re gonna be, like, “Wait, what? Marshmallows and toothpicks, and natural disasters? But you.” Yeah, we’re going to do that, and I have a challenge for you. This is your challenge: I need you to get a bag of marshmallows, and you know what I love about this, is if your marshmallows ever get stale, the worst thing to do as a scientist is to throw them out. You can reuse anything, rather than making it into garbage. Now, you have a challenge, and your challenge is this, can you create a multi-story structure, a structure, I think, that people can build? So, you have to make it multi-floored, which means more than one or two, I would say. And, here’s the kick, after you build it, it has to be standing. You’re not allowed to hold it up. It has to be free-standing and stable. Stable on the table. Gravity should not be knocking it down. Then, we’re going to simulate an earthquake. So, after you’re done, and you've made this really awesome structure, made out of only marshmallows and toothpicks, we’re going to shake the table, and we’re going to make an earthquake. And you can be, like, “Earthquake.” Just tremble and vibrate. And if your structure is still standing after 30 seconds of your simulated earthquake, you, my dear, are an engineer. And check this out. Your structure’s actually gonna be three-dimensional, and all you need are marshmallows, and all we need are toothpicks. It doesn't matter if they’re the pointy type or the flat type, but, marshmallows are actually cylinder shapes. So, take a marshmallow, take a toothpick, put it through. You kinda have, it looks like you’re going to be working out with it, but you’re not. Now, think about how we can take this, and turn it into a really awesome three-dimensional shape. I’m going to start with this square, and then I’m going to build it up, and turn this square into a cube. Now I’m going to start going higher, just like this. And the beauty about this experiment is, a bag of marshmallows is so inexpensive. Toothpicks, pretty much anybody has toothpicks at home. And, I can learn so many amazing concepts of engineering, building, gravity, center of gravity. You see, you really want this structure to have this amazing centered gravity, so that, If you really think about it, gravity’s always trying to knock you down. In fact, unfortunately, when we get a little older, you start to lean forward, because in your lifetime, your body has done nothing but battle gravity. Which is why our backs arch as we get older. But, now look. I just made a three-dimensional cube. This is exactly one floor high. But the challenge is, could you create multi floors. And, as you get it to go higher and higher, it has to be stable. Stable on the table. You do not want it to be not balanced. The rules are you’re not allowed to hold it up. This is a challenge. And you’re only allowed to use toothpicks; you’re not allowed to get Scotch tape. Okay? That’s the challenge. And, as you can see already, mine is starting to lean. Gravity’s always pulling on it. I’m only gonna make mine three toothpicks high, just because I don’t need to make it bigger. That’s gonna be your challenge. Then, I’m gonna simulate an earthquake, and then, I’m gonna see if my structure is still standing. And, there are other things that you can do, actually, to try to make your structure more stable. Questions like, ‛What happens if you added toothpicks across the squares?’ Something like this. Would this help? Would this help? Science is all about asking questions. Test them, and see what happens. That’s two toothpicks high, and now I’m gonna go three toothpicks high. And by the way, if you don’t have marshmallows, you can actually use gumdrops. My whole point of this is, you can build and learn about structure and engineering and earthquakes, using any materials that you have at home. Uh-oh, gravity. Stop. There we go, it does get a little harder as you get higher. You gotta realize that, and you guys are gonna get frustrated. Starts to look like the leaning Tower of Marshmallows. And, I’m just going to put my toothpicks across the top, and then I’m gonna shake the table, and it’s earthquake time. Will my structure still be standing? Will it fall? I

Analytical Instrumentation - Raman Spectroscopy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One may have heard about Raman effect quite a lot of times. In this video we are going to discuss the concept of Raman scattering first. But we also need to understand Rayleigh scattering first. Once the phenomenon of Raman scattering is explained, this video will discuss why and how the Raman effect takes place and how Raman scattering is generated. The viewer will also learn about the stokes lines and anti-stokes lines and how Raman scattering is a two photon process. Finally, the use of Raman effect in spectroscopy is discussed. This will help to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on the sample under test. The Raman scattering takes place due to inelastic collision between photons and electrons. The difference in energy between incident photon and emitted photon generates Raman lines. Depending on the emitted frequency, the lines generated are called as Stokes lines if their frequency is less than incident frequency of photons, if the frequency of emitted photons is greater than incident frequency, it is called as Anti-stokes lines. From the Raman spectra, one can determine the molecule in the sample by studying the stokes and anti-stokes lines.
