Manufacturing | How to Start Your Fashion Company®

03:12
Learn how to manufacture your line without losing money! Share this video: http://youtu.be/qx0aR_cy1g0 Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=mshopnyc ________________________________ Manufacturing is a topic that--I think it causes stress. That's a really tough segment of the business to deal with. If you're a starting designer, it's difficult to build those relationships. The ones that you need to have with the suppliers and with the factories so that they can produce your product to your standards. And I'm here to help. I have a couple of tips. My number one tip is don't pay for your production up front. If you put your product in a factory, you want to pay them upon delivery. Once they make you beautiful product and it passes all your tests and it's to your quality standards, that's when you pay for your product. I once had this client--she came to me after she place her production in a factory, she paid them upfront and then they pretty much stopped communicating with her. They would not answer her phone calls, they would not give her anything that she needed; she actually had to show up at the factory and pretty much they ruined her production. And all of this is because she paid upfront. They no longer cared about the fact that they had to produce her product to standard. So one of my major tips to you designers out there is to not only find a reputable, really good quality factory but to pay them when the work is completed. Now, I know it's difficult because you're new, you're newly working with them--they don't trust you as much as maybe you don't trust them. Some of them may ask for a deposit. You being a newbie, I'd say don't pay a deposit, but if you must--if you're in that factory and they're working on product for a line that you hold in high regard then maybe pay only up to a ten percent deposit. The factory still has to work for it. You can't pay them enough so then they don't care anymore about your order. I say don't pay a deposit--but if you must, if this is imperative, if there is no other way for them to produce you're product and they are a spectacular, high quality, top of the line factory, then I may give them a deposit, but I would only give them--like I said--ten percent, so that they still have to earn the ninety percent and they still have to give you the quality that your company requires. So my tip to you, designers, is don't pay factories up front. Deposit only in dire straits, only if, again, the factory is top, primo, A-1, wonderful quality then ten percent would be the max that you should ever give as a deposit to a factory, so that you can get your product made to standards at the end. ________________________________ With 25 years of expert experience in the industry, fashion authority Michelle Alleyne is dedicated to bringing her immeasurable industry knowledge and personal expertise to aspiring designers everywhere. The Business Plan | How to Start Your Fashion Company®

03:35
How to Start Your Fashion Company Series: The Business Plan Share this video: http://youtu.be/ouDCwGl_7Pg Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=mshopnyc _________________________ Welcome to our six part series exploring the different aspects of starting a fashion company. Today we're going to focus on the business plan. Designers often have an issue with the balancing both the creative and business side of starting a fashion company, but the business plan is where we really need to make sense of what we have envisioned in our heads. It helps you get to where you need to go to meet your goals--it will get you from point A to point Z. It will help you figure out how much you need to raise in terms of capital, how you're going to reach your market, and how to sell your product. And if it's about physical location, that research--that gathering of the data to set up your business plan--is really going to save your lives. So don't skip this step! It is really important. When I started my company, I started as a boutique and I had a very thin business plan. I did write down my ideas, but I don't think I was as thorough as I should have been in terms of starting a business--the way I recommend it now after experiencing what I did. I opened a store in the completely wrong neighborhood and while today I always preach "location, location, location, location," I didn't preach that to myself back then. It wasn't a part of my business plan and I ended up on the wrong street, which actually required me to move my store from the first location to a second location. It ate up a ton of my capital and it made my expenses very tough to meet. You don't want to do that and I feel that the business plan will help to prevent you from making similar mistakes. You'll have an idea of the route you need to take to get to your end goals. You will look into your industry to figure out what is needed and required, what your customers what, and how to attract those costumers. And that is so very important. I can't stress it more. If you are needing help with the business plan, just give us a call or shoot us an email and we will help you out. There are tons of resources that we can direct you to. We can even write the business plan for you! We can hold your hand as you write the business plan. But again, designers, do not skip this step. It will help you get everything that you need, all of your components, all of the processes, all of the people, all of the talent in line so that you can achieve your goals of starting your fashion company. _________________________ With 25 years of expert experience in the industry, fashion authority Michelle Alleyne is dedicated to bringing her immeasurable industry knowledge and personal expertise to aspiring designers everywhere. _________________________ Become a subscriber for more helpful tips! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=mshopnyc Visit our website: https://www.mshopnyc.com/ Follow us: https://www.pinterest.com/mshopnyc/www-mshopnyc-com/ https://www.facebook.com/m.shopnyc https://www.twitter.com/MShopNYC http://www.linkedin.com/pub/m-shop-nyc/7/634/bbb/ Music: Son Of A Rocket Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)

Market Research | How to Start Your Fashion Company®

03:11
How to Start Your Fashion Company: Market Research Share this video: http://youtu.be/mHuYiKoDxFY Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=mshopnyc ___________________________ Within all of the other segments I mention research. And that's because it's critical. It's important. It is probably one of the most important activities that you need to accompany your idea for starting a business. You really, really have to look into the industry, look into the market to understand how the system works and figure out where you fit into that system and that's all about the research. You've got to speak to your customers, you've got to speak to experts in the field, you've got to do a ton of reading of trade publications and blogs and follow the companies in the industry that maybe your competitors, but follow them to see what they're doing and how they're being successful or how they're not being successful. Market research is imperative in the fashion industry and it's continual. You're not just doing market research for your business plan, you're doing it every season. You're doing it continually, every selling period. You want to understand the market, what's happening. You want to combine that with studying the economy and what's going on in the world beyond fashion. You want to look to other industries for information that you might be able to feed of off in the fashion industry. For example, new phone, new bag that I can add to my collection that I'm designing. New way to carry the phone, new anything from any industry. I know it's difficult to compile market research data, but you can call on us. You can purchase it. But you really need to have some means of looking into your industry that you want to enter and figuring out whether or not you're entering it properly, whether your prices are okay. Will your consumer pay those prices? Will your consumer come to where you're selling your product? You want to know everything you can about your consumer--you want to create a profile of your consumer so that you can figure out their every move. When do they want your product? How much do they want it for? Where do they want to buy it? That's all such important information and you need that in order to be a successful fashion company. You need to understand your customer, you need to understand your market. ___________________________ With 25 years of expert experience in the industry, fashion authority Michelle Alleyne is dedicated to bringing her immeasurable industry knowledge and personal expertise to aspiring designers everywhere. How to Start a Fashion Company - Episode 2 - Two Eggs Vlog

Come behind the scenes with me as I share what I'm working on in the studio, what I'm doing to promote the brand, and what happens on a day to day basis when running a fashion company. You'll probably see a lot of random dancing too. I like doing that. This week, I spent a lot of time building out the marketing plan, digging deep into the financials of my company. Over the weekend, I let my hair down a bit and ended up being spotted by both Racked NY and The Lo Down (hi, Lo!). I also started a fun little project that will be going out to the next 10 customers! Selling Your Line | How to Start Your Fashion Company®

03:10
Make Money and Sell Your Line! Share this video: https://youtu.be/js32bOPLPaY Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=mshopnyc ---------------------------------------- Welcome back to another session of our tips on helping you help yourself start your fashion company. Today I'm talking about sales. There are a few options out there: a showroom. If you hire a showroom it's going to cost you. There are quite a bit of fees involved. And also keep in mind that showrooms want designers that have a track record. So if you don't have a track record, I don't want to discourage you, I'm just letting you know that they're looking for someone with a bit of a following. Maybe you've gotten some write ups and that could get you in the door. But showrooms are an option. If they're a very well-known showroom they have relationships with all of the retails that you want to sell your collection to. Another option would be hiring an independent sales rep. This might be a great way to go. Sometimes they will take on designers that don't have a huge sales record because they're representing other brands and they tend to have a lower overhead than a showroom and it's kind of like a traveling salesman. In both cases you have to pay a percentage and in the showroom specifically you have to pay a rental fee. Now the option that might be best for young upstarting designers might be selling your line yourself. Which means hiring someone fresh out of school, fresh out of fashion school, to take care of your sales and deal directly with the buyers as well as having your own online boutique. So you want to combine the two. Having meet your online boutique will allow you to build your client bases. Now this is something that you can use for the showroom later on. The fact that you have a website, that you're selling, you have consumers following you looks great in the eyes of the showroom. So in that case you hire your own sales rep, you have your own website, you build your clientele, you build your exposure and then maybe you'll be able to get into that showroom of your choice who has a relationship with all of the retailers that you want to sell your collection in. I strongly recommend having someone in house. Find the budget, hire an intern and have them focus specifically on outflow to buyers and building relationships with buyers. That's something that can be taught so that you don't pay huge budget in the beginning with the showroom. Good luck designers. Sell your line! ---------------------------------------- With 25 years of expert experience in the industry, fashion authority Michelle Alleyne is dedicated to bringing her immeasurable industry knowledge and personal expertise to aspiring designers everywhere. If there's a word to describe how I'm feeling today it's 'meh'. Nothing seriously bad, nothing seriously great either....just meh. Been a stressful week, although very rewarding. I created a capsule collection for my friend's web series, I started a new side hustle with a friend, and I've (sorta) been working on planning the road show for Two Eggs. I'm really excited about the future holds although this video doesn't sound too hopeful. I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to think I might need help, so if you have some time to spare and are interested in learning more about the fashion biz, please email me [email protected] and we will figure out a fun project to work on together!

Having a real crappy day over here and to top it all off it took me basically FOREVER to get this video published today. Like 4 hours FOREVER. 4 hours that I DON'T HAVE TO SPEND UPLOADING VIDEOS, but I committed to doing this and so I'm going to freaking do it - and do it well. Two Eggs things are progressing slowly but surely. I'm taking little baby steps forward each week. This past week, I prepped for my very first popup shop which starts Sept. 2 in the East Village. I'll share more details on instagram (@wearetwoeggs). Also, I've been doing a lot of networking and prepwork for the next group of items that are coming out (fingers crossed by mid-September). I'm digging this whole thing so much, even with all the shitty shittyness that's come up these past couple days. It's rewarding and painful and awesome! Fortunately it's nothing to do directly with Two Eggs and all to do with basically every other aspect of my life. I would not recommend following my example, but I do recommend learning from my mistakes. ************************************************************ FOLLOW US: Website: https://goo.gl/EzIKJ2 Instagram: https://goo.gl/kpm5zj Twitter: https://goo.gl/vVHKGN Facebook: https://goo.gl/V8Bnx9 ************************************************************ Visit the Open Space popup shop September 1-30, 2015 89 Avenue C, New York, NY http://goo.gl/XCosaS See our stuff and a bunch of other stuff in one cool place! ************************************************************ Watch all the other vlogs!
