Seven sentenced after attack on rival drug dealer, Exeter
Gang sentenced to 67.5 years in prison A gang of seven men have been jailed for 87.5 years after an Exeter man was almost stabbed to death in a rival drugs war. Conor Cain, 19, was stabbed 18 times while he slept at a house in Lower Summerlands on 6 April 2016. He was blinded by pepper spray before being attacked by at least four men who were wearing masks or hoods. He suffered severe injuries including a four-inch deep potentially fatal chest wound, three wounds to his liver and others to his legs and head. His life was only saved because he received immediate medical attention for the chest wound and loss of blood. Exeter Crown Court heard that the assault was due to a rivalry between a group of drug dealers from Liverpool who had been operating around Devon and Cornwall. Mr Cain became a target due to his involvement in drug dealing and because he had concealed a consignment of Class A drugs inside his body. This was discovered by doctors at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital as he underwent treatment for the knife wounds. Cain was jailed for three-and-a-half years in a young offenders’ institution last July for possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply. Seven men, four from Liverpool and three from Devon, all previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and were sentenced by Exeter Crown Court today [29 June] for the attack on Conor Cain. Sentencing is as follows: · Bart Wrighton, 22, of Trafalgar Close, Plymouth, 13.5 years custody 4 years on license · Liam O'Brien, 22, of Overbury Street, Liverpool; 13 years custody 4 years on license · Callum Cheetham, 22, of East Prescott Road, Liverpool, 13 years custody 4 years on license · Matthew Henney, 21, of Eaglehall Road, Liverpool; 10 years custody plus 4 years on license · Carl Mainard, 39, of Russell Walk, Exeter, had admitted unlawful wounding. – 2 years custody and 1 year on license · Drew Morgan, 28, of Wynford Road, Exeter; - 1 year in custody suspended for 2 years The court convicted and sentenced Toohey 19 years (15 years in custody, 4 years on license) in his absence, after he went on the run and failed to turn up for court to face trial. A warrant has been issued for his arrest and police enquiries continue on an effort to locate him. During the trial the court heard that four Liverpudlians travelled to Devon and Morgan allowed his Wynford Road flat to be used as a local base for the gang to operate from. They returned to the flat as a refuge after the attack. Mainard was caught on CCTV buying a block of knives from the Rydon Lane branch of Tesco to be used in the attack. Police found the discarded knives and knife block in roads around the scene of the crime. Deputy senior investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Dave Egan from Exeter Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “We welcome today’s sentence. This was a complex and demanding investigation led by the Exeter Major Crime Investigation Team over 12 months. “The vicious knife attack upon victim Conor Cain in April 2016 was linked to the unlawful supply of controlled drugs in Devon and Cornwall. “Since the attack the tenacity and attention to detail of the investigation team has led to the arrest, charge and successful conviction of seven defendants. “By working in partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service, Merseyside Police and other multi-agency colleagues we have ensured a successful outcome in this case. I would like to thank Mr Simon Laws QC and Barrister Peter Coombe who led on a difficult and complex prosecution, and played a key role in the securing of a successful conviction. “Today’s verdict and sentencing proves that crimes of this type are a community priority, will always be taken seriously and offenders will be brought to justice.”

Seven men given life in prison for sexual assaults on women during public rallies in Tahrir Square
An Egyptian court sentenced seven men to life in prison in Cairo on Wednesday for sexual assaults on women during public rallies in the capital's iconic Tahrir Square, in the first such sentences since the government vowed to crack down on rampant sexual violence. Sexual harassment has long been a problem in Egypt, but assaults have become more frequent and brutal over the past three years of turmoil, with frenzied mobs targeting women who take part in political gatherings. Videos of the brutal attacks posted online caused a public outcry and pushed new leader President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to make the highest profile condemnation of the escalating phenomenon and order a crackdown on perpetrators. A week later, 13 suspects were sent to trial in a speedy referral aimed to send a message of deterrence. The charges stemmed from four different incidents of sexual assault this year and last year, including one during celebrations of the inauguration of el-Sissi in June. The various charges against the defendants ranged from attempted rape, kidnapping and assault to torture and attempted murder. In a nationally-televised session on Wednesday, the judge sentenced the seven men to life in prison. Three of them received multiple life sentences for taking part in different assaults, and another two men were given 20-year sentences. The men will be placed on surveillance for five years once they finish their sentences. They were also ordered to pay financial compensation. Prolific Burglars Jailed
A group of prolific burglars have been jailed after pleading guilty to robberies in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Derbyshire. Today, Tuesday 9 October 2018, seven men have been jailed at Minshull Street Crown Court following an investigation into a spate of almost 30 robberies at business premises including fast food restaurants, bars, book makers, supermarkets and sports shops in Stockport, Tameside, Buxton and Poynton. Ryan Ridgeway (06/05/1984) of Chesworth Close Stockport, has been jailed for three years and three months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Scott Ridgway (06/06/1979) of Bosden Close, Stockport, has been jailed for two years and eight months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Ryan Davy (21/11/1978) of Fairfield Road, Buxton, Derbyshire, has been jailed for two years eight months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Robert Arthur (28/02/1986) of Stonemill Terrace, Stockport, has been jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Andrew Hill (05/07/1977) of Leburnham Way, Stockport has been jailed for two years four months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. Robin Ocego (08/04/1976) of Bolton Road, Radcliffe, has been jailed for two years after pleading guilty to handling stolen goods and money laundering. Jake McMahon (11/08/1992) of Carrington Road, Stockport, has been jailed for three years and four months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. The court heard that between January and September 2017 the group carried out robberies, breaking into premises usually by prizing open fire doors with crow bars then using angle grinders and sledge-hammers to break into safes. The group would tamper with alarm sensors during the day before returning at night to finish off their job or would deliberately set off the alarms at night and wait to see if anyone responded before breaking in. The group also targeted businesses who stored designer products and clothing. They would then sell them on eBay. Investigating officers found the value of these items to be over £640,000. Detective Constable Leanne Banks from GMP’s Stockport borough said: “Under the cover of darkness this group wreaked havoc, stealing significant amounts of money and goods from business across Greater Manchester and beyond. “They were brazen thieves who came armed with tools and heavy machinery to break into safes, stealing thousands of pounds of hard earned takings and goods. “CCTV gathered by the investigation team shows just how determined and prepared they were. “They may have spent 2017 reaping the rewards of their crimes but they will be spending 2018 and beyond sat in prison being reminded every day that crime does not pay.”

Armed robber jailed for seven years after raiding a Derby supermarket at knifepoint.
An armed robber has been jailed for seven years after raiding a Derby supermarket at knifepoint. CCTV footage shows Desmond Myers enter the Co-Op, in Ashbourne Road, brandishing a knife toward members of staff behind the counter. He is seen taking cigarettes and cash from the tills before leaving. The robbery took place on January 24. The 25-year-old, of Hucknall Road, Nottingham, denied robbery and having a knife in public but was found guilty of both crimes. He was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Friday, July 21. Investigating officer DC Laura Sanders: “I am thrilled with the verdict and sentence. “As the CCTV shows, this was clearly a terrifying experience for both the staff involved and the members of the public who witnessed it. “Myers entered the store with the sole intention to steal and he threatened the staff with the knife to enable him to do so. He was not concerned with how this would affect those involved and continued to deny his involvement throughout the trial. “The actions of one of the customers in the store, in particular, were fundamental in leading us to identify Myers and I am very grateful for his assistance. “The sentence sends a strong message that offences such as these, particularly involving weapons, will be severely punished and I hope that this acts as a deterrent.” Judge Jonathan Bennett awarded £500 each to two members of staff for their bravery during the robbery.

Chinese man jailed for seven years for illegal possession and dealing in ivory
A Chinese man was ordered by a Kenyan court on Tuesday to pay a fine of 230 thousand US dollars or face seven years in jail for illegally possessing and dealing in ivory. 40-year-old Tang Yong Jian was sentenced at the Makadara Law Courts in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. He had pleaded guilty to all the charges. Jian was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while in transit from Napula, Mozambique to Guangzhou, China, on Saturday. A joint security team comprising of officials from the Kenya Airports Police Unit, Customs, Kenya Airways and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) detected him trying to smuggle 3.4kg of raw ivory packed in a suitcase through the country. Kenya has been cracking down on the illegal ivory trade and a new Wildlife Act created in 2013 provides that a suspect shall be liable upon conviction to a fine of not less than 230 thousand US dollars or to life imprisonment or to both such fine and imprisonment. The African elephant and the rhinoceros, listed as threatened and endangered species by law, have been the most poached and illegally traded due to the value attached to their products. A spokesman for the Kenya Wildlife Service, which manages the country's celebrated national parks, was pleased with Tuesday's verdict. "We welcome this sentence. It's the first of its kind since the enactment of the new wildlife act and we are sure that this will pass a deterrent, a message out to would be poachers to ensure we can now therefore save the endangered species in this country" Paul Muya said. Tang Yong Jian has 14 days to appeal against the sentence. http://www.facebook.com/ABC2.au Sunday nights on ABC2 is the home of Sunday Best, an outstanding collection of game-changing and thought-provoking feature length documentaries. We've done the work to bring you the best must-see intelligent docos that are just too good to miss. Hosted by Kristy Best. Aileen Wuornos, a hitch-hiking prostitute was arrested in January 1991 for the murder of seven men in the woods of Florida. Dubbed the world's first female serial killer, her case earned her international infamy. In the early 1990s, filmmaker Nick Broomfield followed the hysterical media circus covering her bizarre and extraordinary trial. The resulting film, 'Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer' documented the trial itself, the misfits attached to the case, the people out to make money from the tragedy and the whole peculiar charade that came to surround the tragic and violent figure at its centre. Wuornos has since been executed but before her death, Broomfield returned to Florida to appear at her appeal hearings and to get answers to some of the questions that had plagued him in the intervening years. At the heart of the film are the astonishing and troubled interviews Broomfield filmed with Wuornos in prison, including her last defiant words the day before her execution.

Afghan Court Sentences Seven Men To Death For Gang Rape
Afghanistan handed the death penalty to seven men on Sunday for raping and robbing a group of women returning from a wedding in a rare case of sexual assault that has shaken the capital and raised concerns over public security at a time of transition. Police said a large group of men, some dressed in police uniforms, and with assault rifles, stopped a convoy of cars in which the women were traveling along with their families in the district of Paghman, just outside Kabul, last month. They dragged four women out of the cars in the middle of the night and raped them in the field near the main road. Crimes against women are common but mostly take place inside homes in Afghanistan's conservative society. But a gang rape by armed men is rare in Kabul and has tapped into a vein of anxiety as foreign troops leave the country and a badly stretched Afghan army and police fight a deadly Taliban insurgency. http://feeds.nbcnews.com/c/35002/f/663303/s/3e3a5d84/sc/11/l/0L0Snbcnews0N0Cnews0Cworld0Cafghan0Ecourt0Esentences0Eseven0Emen0Edeath0Eshocking0Egang0Erape0En197666/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Escape from Death Row (special)
Linwood and J.B. Briley were the ringleaders in the six inmate escape from Virginia's death row atMecklenburg Correctional Center on May 31, 1984. During the early moments of the escape, in which a co-ordinated effort resulted in inmates taking over the death row unit, both Brileys expressed strong interest in killing the captured guards by dousing them with rubbing alcohol and tossing a lit match.Willie Lloyd Turner, another death row inmate, stepped in the way of James Briley and forbade him to do so.[citation needed] Meanwhile, cop killer Wilbert Lee Evans prevented Linwood Briley from raping a female nurse who had been taken hostage while en route to delivering medication to inmates in the unit.[citation needed] The group's initial plan was to escape into Canada. Two inmates, Lem Tuggle and Willie Jones, almost succeeded, making it as far as Vermont before capture at gunpoint by police. The group was held at Marble Valley Correctional Facility in Rutland, pending their extradition back to Virginia. Splitting off from their two remaining co-escapers atPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, the Brileys went to live near their uncle in the north of the city. They were captured on June 19 by a heavily armed group of FBIagents and police, who had determined their location by placing wiretaps on their uncle's phone line.[citation needed] Following their return to Richmond, Virginia, few sought to plead for the Brileys lives to be spared.

7 MEN ARRESTED IN VCSO’S LATEST INTERNET PREDATOR STING OPERATION Seven men who traveled to parking lots across Volusia County to meet children for sex instead found themselves in handcuffs as the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office conducted its latest undercover sting targeting Internet predators, “Operation Unlawful Attraction.” The arrests included one man who chatted with undercover VCSO detectives in another predator operation two years ago, but never traveled to meet his target. This time, 43-year-old George Wallace of South Daytona made the trip and was arrested in a Racetrac gas station parking lot in Daytona Beach. His statements to an undercover detective indicated he’d had sex with a 15-year-old more than once in the past. Another defendant, 22-year-old Jonathan William Hayes of Eustis, is a former Florida Elks Youth Camp counselor and currently a maintenance worker; he told a chatter (who he believed was 14 years old) in detail about a previous sexual encounter with a 16-year-old girl. When 34-year-old James Bowen, co-owner of Bob’s Barber Shop in Gainesville, was arrested at a Racetrac station in Deltona, he told deputies he only came to the meeting place because he believed it was an undercover sting and he thought it would be cool to see it in action. His sexually charged chats and texts with an undercover detective he believed was a 14-year-old girl ensured that he got his wish. CCTV captures men holding 'injured' necks after crash - Daily Mail
Merrick Williams (inset and right) has been jailed after admitting conspiracy to commit fraud. Williams rented a car before crashing into a bus in Cardiff, which had his seven friends on board (left), on May 21, 2014. CCTV taken from the bus shows that the car passed the bus on two occasions before ploughing into the back of it at low speed. While one passenger appeared to be thrown to the floor when the car hit the bus, none of the other passengers moved. Insurance investigators AIG became suspicious after receiving personal injury claims - worth more than £50,000 - from the seven men who were on the bus. Dentist arrested after 'illegally killing 1,000 jaguars on sick hunting trips'
Cops have busted a gang of illegal poachers after a dentist in the group reportedly killed over 1,000 protected jaguars.  The dentist was one of seven men arrested in Brazil on suspicion of killing thousands of endangered animals, including jaguars, capybara, collared peccary and red brocket deer.  Reports state the longest-serving member of the gang and the most prolific was Temistocles Barbosa Freire, a dentist who is believed to have illegally killed over 1,000 jaguars since 1987.  Images reportedly show Freire carrying a dead jaguar on his back as hunting dogs surround him.    Reports state the Brazilian authorities had hacked the gang's conversations and monitored their movement for at least three months before making the arrests.  All seven men were arrested and the Federal Court has opened criminal cases of illegal hunting and use of a firearm without a permit against the men.  The other six men have been named as doctor Doria de Lucena Junior, worker in the Judicial Branch Sinezio Adriano de Oliveira, farmer Gilvan Souza Nunes, prison officer Gisleno Jose Oliveira de Araujo Sa, electrician Manoel Alves de Oliveira, and Sebastiao Junior de Oliveira Costa, Reginaldo Ribeiro da Silva and Gersildo dos Santos Araujo, whose professions were not reported.    Reports state that in the three months the police monitored the gang they killed "eight jaguars, 13 capybaras, 10 collared peccaries and two deer".  The gang are said to have used the sound of the cuica, a high-pitched Brazilian friction drum, to attract the jaguars.  Reports state the gang could face prison sentences and fines if found guilty, depending on their exact participation in the crimes.  The jaguar is the largest cat in Latin America and it is listed on the CITES Appendix I, which means that all international trade in jaguars or their body parts is prohibited.  Hunting jaguars is prohibited in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, the United States, and Venezuela. The jaguar is listed as "Near Threatened" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.  The case comes after American dentist Walter Palmer killed Cecil the Lion, a male lion which lived n the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe, and was being studied by a research team from the University of Oxford.  Cecil was wounded with an arrow by Palmer in July 2015 before being tracked and killed with a bow and arrow the following morning. Palmer had a permit and was not charged with any crimes but he received widespread criticism for killing the lion after the case received international media attention.  The United States Fish and Wildlife Service added lions in India and West and Central Africa to the endangered species list five months after Cecil was killed, making it more difficult for United States citizens to legally kill lions.  The investigation in Brazil is ongoing.
