Salt Lake Baskunchak Russian Dead Sea

10:58
THERAPEUTIC SALT AND MUD TREATMENT IN ONE PLACE .

Black salt tradition kept alive by small Russian factory

06:04
(19 Apr 2019) LEAD IN: Producing black salt is an old Easter tradition in Russia. The roasted mixture of salt and rye flour is lower in minerals, making it a healthier choice for families. STORYLINE: In a small factory in the Russian village of Ivankovo, a centuries-old tradition is being kept alive. Factory workers are mixing salt with rye flour to create black salt. The mixture is poured into fabric bags and roasted in a wood oven for 24 hours, giving the salt crystals a dark gray or black colour. Once a product that could be found in all Russian households, black salt was produced during the Christian Holy Week, ahead of Easter. Among other uses, it was traditionally consumed along with dyed Easter eggs. "In the past, it was powdered manually and taken to the church on the eve on Easter. This salt was considered to have healing qualities," says black salt technologist Alexander Nikitin. For Nikitin black salt is a family affair. His mother made black salt before he took it up over nearly 20 years ago. "Everyone in my family, all my relatives are using it. As a child, I remember taking a  piece of bread putting black salt and butter on it," he adds. Black salt is said to be more beneficial to health than regular salt. Its production method changes its chemical composition, resulting in fewer minerals harmful to the kidneys, liver and digestive tract. "It does not remain in the body because it has a minimum level of sodium, (sodium) can accumulate in the joints and everywhere. And there is more potassium. I know people who have kidney disease and they buy this salt from us. Because they can eat this salt without restrictions, while they cannot eat white salt," says Galina Kruchinina, who works at the black salt factory. Today the small enterprise produces 60 tonnes of the black salt a year. The biggest markets for it are nearby Kostroma and Moscow. The factory also regularly supplies its products to Serbia and hopes to expand export to Germany and the Baltic States. 500 grams of black salt will cost 3 US dollars, which is about 10 times more expensive than regular salt. Baskunchak - salt Russia

06:12
Baskunchak - salt lake in the Astrakhan region, about 270 km to the North from the Caspian sea, and 53 km to the East from the Volga. The water level in the lake is 21 m below the ocean level. The salinity of the lake is about 300 g/l. The power of the surface salt deposits on the lake reaches 10-18 m. As a result of the mining of salt were formed выломы up to a depth of 8 meters. The depth of the salt reaches 6 km. In the spring and in the autumn the level of brine of the lake maximum - up to 1 meter. In brine inhabit only the bacteria, which make salt. The brine of the lake by 37 % saturated with salt. Baskunchak is a kind of recess on the top of the salt mountain, the outgoing based on thousands of meters into the ground and covered with a thick layer of sedimentary rocks. In the VIII century the lake was mined salt and sent it to the silk road. Today is an extremely pure salt lake (99.8 % NaCl) is up to 80 % from the General extraction of salt in Russia. Depending on the needs, here is extracted from 1.5 million to 5 million tons of salt a year. Lake Baskunchak is part of the unique natural complex, including the mountain Big Bogdo. In 1997 bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky natural complex was declared a nature reserve (bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky nature reserve), where on the area of 53,7 thousand hectares of a special protection regime.

Bolivian President Evo Morales Visits Russia And Agrees Crucial Lithium Deal With Putin!

04:00
During an official visit to Russia, Bolivia's President Evo Morales discussed Thursday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin the two countries cooperation on the hydrocarbon industry while hoping to expand their industrialization efforts of lithium. "Our great wish is that we continue working as we have done on the subject of hydrocarbons," Morales said at the beginning of his meeting with Putin in Moscow, where he recalled that both countries are already cooperating in energy industries. Morales went on to say that Bolivia "has begun the industrialization of lithium" and that he is interested in "Russia accompanying" the Andean country in this new energy, "which will be very important in the world." Besides being applied for the medical treatment of bipolar disorder, Lithium is used for the producing of aluminum products, shock-resistant glasses, ceramics, cosmetics, and plastics. It is also required in high-tech military, industrial, automotive, aircraft, and marine applications. “The global demand for lithium, the lightweight metal used to make high-powered batteries for cell phones, laptops, and hybrid cars, is expected to triple in the next 15 years. From 50 to 70 percent of the world's supply of this critical mineral is contained in just one place -- Bolivia's Uyuni salt flats,” the Foreign Policy review reported. Why Caviar Is So Expensive | So Expensive

05:13
Caviar is one of the most expensive foods in the world. Selling for up to $35,000 per kilo, it's revered and relished by aristocrats across the globe. But it's an acquired taste. Turns out, caviar wasn't always so valuable. In the 19th century, sturgeon species in the US were so common that there are accounts of caviar being offered in saloons for free, like bar nuts. In Europe, fishermen were feeding the eggs to their pigs, or leaving it on the beach to spoil. What changed? Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Similar to true champagne, caviar doesn't come from just anywhere. This, for example, is not caviar. To get the real thing, it has to be eggs from a sturgeon. There are 27 species around the world in North America, Europe, and Asia. But probably not for long.  Arne Ludwig: In this case, sturgeon will die out because humans are over-harvesting their populations and destroying their habitats. In 2010, the International Union for Conservation of Nature placed 18 species on its Red List of Threatened Species, making the sturgeon the most endangered group of species on Earth. But lists like these are bittersweet. On the one hand, they can help protect the sturgeon from further population decline. On the other hand, the rarer that caviar becomes, the more we can't get enough of it. There's actually an economic idea that explains this. It's called the rarity value thesis and it describes how "rarity increases the value of the item." Sturgeon can weigh up to several thousand pounds, and produce hundreds of pounds of roe at a time. The world record belongs to a beluga sturgeon that weighed 2,520 pounds and yielded 900 pounds of roe. Today, she'd be worth about half a million dollars.  It wasn't until around the 20th century when these freshwater fish and their eggs became a rare commodity. Pollution poisoned their waters and dams blocked their spawning grounds upstream. They had nowhere to reproduce and continued to be overfished for their meat and roe. On top of that, it takes 8-20 years for a female to sexually mature, depending on the species. She can produce millions of eggs at a time, but odds are that only one will survive to adulthood. In the end, the sturgeon population couldn't keep up with demand and their coveted eggs became the jewels of the luxury food scene. Today, caviar imports and exports are closely regulated in the US., which is partly why it's so expensive.  Deborah Keane: People forget that every single egg, every one of these eggs is taken off by hand. Now, remember that we're dealing with a raw seafood endangered species. So it is basically like eating and dealing with edible elephant tusks. It is that heavily regulated. That's why today, the majority of caviar comes from sturgeon farms. Deborah Keane: Little did I know that by 2011, all wild caviar would become illegal on the planet. When I started there were six farms in the world and only two producing caviar in the world and that was in 2004. Now, there are 2,000 farms. One farm, in particular, in China called Kaluga Queen produces 35% of the world's caviar. Caviar there is harvested with the classic Russian and Iranian technique, which involves killing the fish and then extracting the eggs. Other farms are exploring a different technique, which doesn't involve killing the fish. It's called stripping. The fish are injected with a hormone that triggers their urge to release eggs. Farmers have been doing this for many years, but not to get caviar — just to produce more fish. It wasn't until recently that people started canning this stuff and selling it as caviar. Dmitrijs Tracuks: The biggest thing is that yes, fish stays alive. You have really small impact on the fish because you do it really fast. You take the fish out of the water, you put it on the special holding facility. The fish has already started to spawn and so all that requires is to press on the belly, massage the belly and the caviar will just flow out of the fish. The idea behind no-kill caviar is a commendable one, but it has yet to catch on. Either way, with caviar farms in place, this gives the wild sturgeon population a chance to recover. But whether or not, that happens is largely up to us.: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ Why Caviar Is So Expensive | So Expensive

88,000 tons of radioactive waste – and nowhere to put it

07:39
The United States produces 2,200 tons of nuclear waste each year…and no one knows what to do with it. The federal government has long promised, but never delivered, a safe place for nuclear power plants to store their spent fuel. This means that radioactive waste is piling up all over the country. We visited one of the worst places where the waste is stuck: a beachside power plant uncomfortably close to both San Diego and Los Angeles. And we asked the people in charge of the waste there: what happens now? New, Clear Energy: Russia's Atomic Revolution

25:42
With rising demand for energy, especially electricity, the world is in need of new resources. Fossil fuels produce harmful carbon emissions and green technology may never be able to provide a reliable source of renewable energy. Despite ongoing concerns about the safety of nuclear power, it's likely going to play an increasingly large role in satisfying our needs. Several projects being developed in Russia will hopefully help make nuclear's enlarged role as safe as possible. Fast neutron reactors look to be the future of the industry, while an advanced gas-cooled reactor design could have benefits beyond electricity generation. And Russia's plans for a fleet of floating nuclear power stations will bring electricity, heat and fresh water to isolated populations.

The Salton Sea: The Skeleton in California's Closet

09:54
What happened to the Salton Sea in California? In my first travel documentary about this strange yet fascinating place in California's Imperial Valley, I explore the sea and surrounding communities of Bombay Beach, Slab City, East Jesus, and Salton City. The area was also the inspiration for the fictional desert town of Sandy Shores which appears in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. In the game, Trevor Philips acquires a small landing strip in the area which may be in reference to the Salton City airport. I encourage you to read more about the lake’s history and the current ecological crisis it has become. You can find an interesting article written by Ian James and Sammy Roth on USA Today here: https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/salton-sea/the-dying-salton-sea. Thanks for watching! I hope to post more of these as I travel! ***CORRECTION*** The Salton Bay Yacht Club was demolished in 2000, not the 80's. Never Stop Exploring is produced by Kyle Frager. SOT, Dmitrii Popov, Senior engineer, Governmental investigation commission (Russian): "Externally the condition is perfect. The thermal insulation and armor protection are a little bit damaged, but the handles are in their place, it is the first sign that inside, if not affected by some salt water, the magnetic tape should remain in excellent condition." Most MYSTERIOUS Discoveries Made In Nature!

Blood From a Stone You may not be able to get blood from an actual stone, as the saying goes, but you can get it from Pyura chilensis, a type of sea creature found on the Western coast of South America. At first glance, the sea creature found off the coast of Chile and Peru looks like your average grey stone. But if you cut through its hard, rock-like exterior shell, you will find blood-red organs, skin and muscles. 7. Devil’s Tooth Imagine going for a leisurely walk, only to stumble upon a bright white mushroom covered in crimson droplets. Don’t be scared, you have just discovered the Devil’s Tooth. Also known by the name strawberries and cream, the Devil’s Tooth certainly doesn’t taste sweet, and is in fact said to have a bitter taste. It is also different from other fungi, that grow spores on feathery gills on the underside of a cap. 6. Psychedelic Salt Mines of Russia You don’t have to stay above-ground to find surprises in nature. In fact, one dazzling display was discovered 650 feet below a Russian city. At first glance, the salt mines of Yekaterinburg look like a tie-dyed t-shirt from the Summer of Love, but the twisting psychedelic patterns are really a remnant of ancient oceans. 5. Skull Pods If the Devil’s Tooth fungus isn’t the kind of thing you want in your garden, you might want to give the snapdragon a try. These flowers are extremely popular. Named for the flower’s shape, which looks like a dragon’s head, the flower looks even more unique after it blooms. And when you squeeze the sides of the flower, you can make the dragon’s mouth open! 4. The Trees of Slope Point On the southernmost tip of an island in New Zealand, strong air currents batter the shoreline. So it is no surprise that the land takes a particularly brutal beating. However, nature has learned to adapt, and one of the more curious results are the trees found on Slope Point. Trees on the southernmost point of South Island have taken on a distinctively windswept look, with the roots and branches perpetually warped and twisted against the current. 3. Petrified Lightning Nature is beautiful but it can be equally as violent, and the powerful forces are none more evident than the effect achieved when lightning strikes sand. After lightning storms, strange tubes with jagged edges can sometimes be found on beaches, in dunes or on mountain tops. These stone-type formations are the after effects of when lightning strikes the sand and melts the silica (or minerals) within. 2. Algal Blooms Not all of nature’s fascinating finds are on land. Look no further than the ocean to discover amazing and mysterious natural wonders, including ones that turn the water an eerie blue-green once the sun goes down. 1. Blood Falls, Antarctica Discovered in Antarctica in the early 1900’s, Blood Falls is very unexpected. When explorers found that a river had stained a cliff with a dark red substance, they at first believed it was the result of a type of algae. But scientists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks did a little detective work and discovered the source of the red water was coming from deep below the icy surface. Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

See the women of Dagestan make salt just like they did 500-years-ago

03:53
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe Footage released on Monday shows women from the small village of Kvankhidatli in southern Russia making salt out of soil and water. Salt used to be the one and only thing locals 'could do for a living', head of the 900 people strong Kvankhidatli village Israil Saygidinov says. The salt making tradition was handed down through the ages for at least 500 years, he emphasises. "They used to travel to Chechnya, to Tsumadinsky and Tsutinsky districts of Dagestan to sell the salt, to trade it for meat. Some say, 10 kilos of salt could be exchanged for 2-3 big sheeps," he describes. Now it's not that popular in Kvankhidatli, but some families stick to ancient traditions and make salt themselves. As it used to be ages ago, women are the wain workers of the so-called salt industry in this Dagestani village. Men may help, but not take the lead. On their turn, these women's husbands and sons are responsible for more difficult things, for example, the wood to make the fire and evaporate the salt. Anyway, boiling the salty water is one of the final steps of the process. As one of the salt makers, Zabihat Davlatova, describes, they start with mixing the soil and sludge with the water from the Andi Koysu river which lies next to the village. Sludge is meant to filter the water, which becomes really salty draining away in stony containers put just next to the river hundreds of years ago. "We take this water, take it to these houses over there, and there we boil it, make a fire and boil it. The water evaporates, the salt remains there. Then we keep this salt in the basket for 24 hours, then we put it in the sun to dry. We are getting snow-white salt at the end," Davlatova says. The basket itself seems to be older than its owner too. Davlatova doesn't know exactly how old is it. 'Probably about a hundred-years-old. It is ancient. My mother-in-law's friends have made it,' she guesses. Relatives are supposed to provide the newcomers with not only tools, but the soil for salt making itself. The plots of land belong to the families of Kvankhidatli. When a daughter gets married, her parents decide on how big the plot of land of a new family should be. These small pieces of land used to cost much more than now - just like salt. The tradition itself becomes rare and may disappear as young people from mountain village do not want to spend their days under the sun or next to the fire with their hands covered with salty soil.
