First impressions are important, and in PR you need to dress the part. Wear something fashionable, on-trend, chic and not too corporate, unless you're applying for a corporate PR position. But if you're applying for anything in entertainment, fashion and brands, it's important again to dress on-trend. The next thing is being prepared. Come to the interview with writing samples, a clip book of press that you've pitched and placed. Now, I know if this is an entry level position, you may not have these things yet. But the fact that you know about them and that they exist and that you know that that's what you're going to be doing once you gain that job in PR, be prepared. So, have a sample of the way that you write. Give an example of what a prospective client would be for you and the sections and the placements you would like to get for them. If you came in to an interview with me, and let's say you didn't have any experience but you knew that field of PR, and you said, "If this was my client, this would be the pitch that I would pitch for them, and this is the sections in the magazine that I would get them in," and give me an example in that interview I'd be sold. And no one has done it to me yet. Like I said, your Rolodex is everything. So, you're going to be asked in an interview, "Who are your contacts? Who are your media relationships? What celebrity publicists or celebrity managers do you have relationships with?" Come in with three to five strong contacts that you can say, "These people will help me in the position at your company," because again, it's about who you know. Also, be prepared to have a list of magazines, blogs, and newspapers that you read on a daily basis. Being that our job is to get our clients in the news, you need to know the news. So during the interview, I want you to tell your future employer, blogs, magazines and newspapers that you read on a daily basis and that you're up to date on what's current.

A lot of artists ask me how to get featured in magazines and the answer is of course public relations (for artists). And yes there are different options for artists then for other businesses. In this video I share both the most common mistakes with public relations within the arts as well as one of the most underused tips when it comes to public relations for artists. Most artists want to go for the quick fixes and just send mass e-mails to journalists in the hope they will get covered. This is one of the most common mistakes when approaching journalists. This approach is a very short term oriented approach and doesn't actually build relationships with journalists. Often times you even burn your relationships with those journalists by being to aggressively oriented towards the one size fits all approach. The best paths for your #PR approach in the fine arts is the path least taken. And often times this path is the hardest path. A rule of thumb in life is that the harder something becomes the less saturation that path will have and therefore often times the more effective it becomes. Whenever you're thinking about how artists get into magazines, you should be thinking what the least traveled paths are. Understanding how to get your art published goes hand in hand with understanding how to bring value to the decision makers that will decide rather or not your art will get featured in magazines. In other words the question 'how to get magazine coverage?' is answered by another question: How to bring value to journalists. And this is exactly the question we cover in this video. You need to be organized, but outgoing, not afraid to go up to that person in the party and introduce yourself. You need to not be afraid to talk about your client, and you're always pitching. A publicist, you're never off. So, the skills you need are just someone who is innovative, outgoing, and loves pop culture. Like I've said before, you need to have your finger on the pulse of everything sexy, hot and what is now, what is going on now. So I know you're going to be a good publicist if you know every magazine out there, the sections in the magazine. You know what's going on right now in the news. To sum it up, to be a good publicist is you're outgoing, you're popular, you're social, you have a head for business and you have your finger on the pulse of everything hot, hip, and news-worthy.

You need to know your target before you pitch it. Think of it like that. A pitch goes to the target. Every client's target audience is different, and you have to identify it. And you have to do that at the beginning of the campaign. With a restaurant, their target audience is consumers, food press, food blogs, celebrity guests, you know, New York prominent individuals depending on where the restaurant is. Let me give you an example of finding your target audience. Let's say you're opening up a new restaurant. The target audience for that restaurant is a local consumer, travelers traveling into that city, it's the media, food critics, food blogs, event planners, and hotels concierges. Right there I've identified my audience for that particular client. So every press that I pitch is going to be trying to garner and reach that audience. So if I'm trying to reach event planners and concierges, I'm going to be pitching in travel magazines and local magazines and I'll be throwing parties specifically for those individuals. In short, the target audience is the most important part of a PR campaign because that's who you're trying to reach. Every client has a different target audience. You need to identify it in the beginning of the PR campaign. We identify the target audience, and we find multiple ways to reach them, through the media, through events, and through just getting them in the door.

Noam Chomsky gave an interview on January 12, 2013 on the responsibility of privilege. There was a brief discussion (excerpted below), on the history of the Public Relations industry and how it is has undermined our markets and our democracy. He describes a PR industry devoted to creating uniformed consumers and voters who make irrational choices. He believes the goal has always been to keep the majority of people uninformed and marginalized so a few individuals can be in control for their own benefit. This desire to control the masses developed out of a fear that in the most democratic societies people have too many rights to be controlled other than through opinion. This common mechanism in our culture has particular significance in the evolving world of social media, where group dynamics rapidly develop opinion through 140 characters of information, (on Twitter). But as Chomsky describes, very few people have the stomach to acknowledge the impact or workings of this industry,even though it is very transparent.
