What does the symbol capital pi mean in mathematics?
Capital Pi or upper-case pi (Π) commonly appears in summations and acts as a product operator. So instead of adding terms, we multiply them when substituting our starting and end points.
In summary you can think of the more commonly used summation involving the use of Sigma but replaced with Pi and we multiply terms instead.

Partial products means we multiply numbers part-by-part. For example, 5 x 36 is done as 5 x 30 and 5 x 6, and those two parts are added. You can quite easily do these in your head when one number has two digits and the other has one.
This concept is very important, as it is the basis for the regular multi-digit multiplication algorithm studied in 4th grade.

About this course: This course introduces the mathematical foundations to derive Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a fundamental dimensionality reduction technique. We'll cover some basic statistics of data sets, such as mean values and variances, we'll compute distances and angles between vectors using inner products and derive orthogonal projections of data onto lower-dimensional subspaces. Using all these tools, we'll then derive PCA as a method that minimizes the average squared reconstruction error between data points and their reconstruction. At the end of this course, you'll be familiar with important mathematical concepts and you can implement PCA all by yourself. If you’re struggling, you'll find a set of jupyter notebooks that will allow you to explore properties of the techniques and walk you through what you need to do to get on track. Module 2 Inner Products
Data can be interpreted as vectors. Vectors allow us to talk about geometric concepts, such as lengths, distances and angles to characterise similarity between vectors. This will become important later in the course when we discuss PCA. In this module, we will introduce and practice the concept of an inner product. Inner products allow us to talk about geometric concepts in vector spaces. More specifically, we will start with the dot product (which we may still know from school) as a special case of an inner product, and then move toward a more general concept of an inner product, which play an integral part in some areas of machine learning, such as kernel machines (this includes support vector machines and Gaussian processes). We have a lot of exercises in this module to practice and understand the concept of inner products.

We begin with a review of how to define the norm in the complex plane, and then how to define the norm in the complex vector space C^n. Just like how the norm in a real vector space can be defined from an inner product, so can the norm in a complex vector space, but there are a few subtle differences. We apply this to the (complex) vector space of periodic functions. Instead of using a basis of sine and cosine waves, we can use a basis of complex exponentials. With respect to the right inner product, these functions form an orthonormal basis. This means that we can write any periodic function uniquely using complex exponentials, called its complex Fourier series. Moreover, just like for real Fourier series, we can derive simple formulas for the Fourier coefficients using the linear algebra theory we've developed -- just take the inner product of f(x) with the corresponding basis function.

Cartesian product of sets: Let A and B be any two non–empty sets. The set of all ordered pairs (a, b) such that a A and b B is called the cartesian product of the sets A and B and is denoted by A B.

Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Lecture 1.4: Inner products and orthogonality
In R^n, the length (norm) of vectors and the angles between vectors can all be defined using a dot product. This also gives rise to basic Euclidean geometry, such as the law of cosines and projections. The generalized version of the dot product in an abstract vector space, written (v,w), is called an "inner product", and it endows a vector space with a basic notion of geometry. Two vectors for which (v,w)=0 are said to be "orthogonal", which is the generalized version of perpendicular. We conclude with a few examples of inner products in spaces of periodic functions. In the latter example, the inner product is defined as an integral, and this makes either the complex exponentials, or the sines and cosine waves, into an orthonormal basis. This leads to the notion of a Fourier series, and how to write any periodic function using an infinite sum of complex exponentials, or sines and cosines.

In this lecture, we go over a couple homework problems using vectors in a physics context. We then move on to the main lesson. Which begins with the dot product.
Last time we learned how to add/subtract and scalar multiply vectors. Some may be wondering what happened to multiplication and division. As it turns out, division is a luxury we often take for granted, we can't divide vectors. (There are cases where we can "multiply by an inverse", which is often seen as equivalent to division, but we cannot do that with the vectors we are studying.) Multiplication, on the other hand, becomes a more sophisticated venture when dealing with vectors. We can multiply, but we won't do it in the "obvious" way, and there are several ways to multiply that give us VERY different kinds of answers. The question is, what do these answers mean, what do they tell us.
The first kind of vector product we look at is THE DOT PRODUCT. This is called the scalar product since the dot product of two vectors is actually a scalar result. We go over properties, formulas, and uses of the dot product. We learn an important formula that relates the dot product to the angle between vectors and hence derive the very useful and important fact that: IF THE DOT PRODUCT IS 0, THEN THE VECTORS IN THE PRODUCT ARE ORTHOGONAL (PERPENDICULAR).
We then remind ourselves how to find the determinants of square matrices, and use them to define another kind of product--THE CROSS PRODUCT. This is called a vector product since the result of the cross product of two 3D vectors is another 3D vector (it's only defined for 3D vectors). The important thing here is, the result of a cross product is a vector that is orthogonal to BOTH vectors in the product. We go over a few examples of this and also bring up a formula that relates the (magnitude of the) cross product to the angle between the two vectors in the product. About Discrete Math
Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures that are fundamentally discrete rather than continuous. In contrast to real numbers that have the property of varying "smoothly", the objects studied in discrete mathematics – such as integers, graphs, and statements in logic[1] – do not vary smoothly in this way, but have distinct, separated values.[2] Discrete mathematics therefore excludes topics in "continuous mathematics" such as calculus and analysis. Discrete objects can often be enumerated by integers. More formally, discrete mathematics has been characterized as the branch of mathematics dealing with countable sets[3] (sets that have the same cardinality as subsets of the natural numbers, including rational numbers but not real numbers).
