How to Play Stride Piano (In the Style of Scott Joplin)
Stride piano is a style that is almost comical these days but is a lot of fun to play! It's also a great workout for your left hand. It's mostly associated with pieces like The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, which was featured in the soundtrack of the 70s movie The Sting. Just look it up, I'm sure you'll recognize it once you hear it. In this video tutorial we will look at how to play stride piano and give some tips on what to do with the left hand and the right hand, so take out your honky-tonk and join the fun! The name "stride" comes from the motion carried out by your left hand: it alternates between bass and chords, making "strides" between the two amounting to large jumps. This might prove somewhat challenging to beginner players so take it easy, work slowly and with a metronome and build up your chops until you can execute the motion.

Play a ballad-style piano improvisation using a simple chord progression
http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really http://www.patreon.com/billhilton Beginners' series playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpOuhygfD7QnP46wUgQudOySX_z2UOhXs In this tutorial I take a look at how to work up a ballad-style piano improvisation using broken chords, rhythmic anticipation and suspension. The whole thing is based on a straightforward, 16-bar chord progression in the key of F major. There are three levels of difficulty, starting with simple broken chords and moving on to more complex improvisational techniques with a rich left hand. I also look at how to use the sustain pedal - pretty much an essential tool in ballad piano - to hold the chords you're playing together and create a rich ambience.

Jerry Lee Lewis style country piano tutorial with solo
* Take note - solo ideas begin at 10.30 for those of you comfortable with comping in country style piano. Nick Tosches insightfully wrote that Jerry Lee Lewis swapped the music of sin (rock'n'roll) for the music of guilt (country). The aptly named Killer made some great records in the country idiom while retaining the flair that marked his trail-blazing early rock material. This tutorial centres around a later cut, "Thirty-Nine and Holding" on the Elektra label. The chords are typical for country - in the key of G with the 4 and 5 as well as 2-5-1 measures including the A7. Take note of the run ups and run downs in the left hand that enhance the emotive qualities of the song. The solo features many signature motifs of the Jerry Lee style: scale runs, riffs in sixths with tremolos, glissandos, liberal smatterings of suspended 2nd chords and blues type turnarounds. Watch Terry's playing as he varies it each time. Get these chops down and you can literally play thousands of country tunes. Enjoy!

How To Play Piano in the Style of Erik Satie
Let's have a fun lesson today! I'm going to talk about the piano style of Erik Satie, an influential composer for piano. Satie's iconic piano style consists of alternating bass-chord accompaniment in the left hand, while using distinct chord degrees (3, 6, 7) to outline their special color in the right hand melody. This is a pretty fun style to write in and it's also pretty easy to get the hang of it! Just use some major 7th and 6 (or 6/9) chords and you'll be playing like Satie in no time. Cocktail piano || Learning A Song In Cocktail Piano Style
Cocktail piano is a really popular style that I get a lot of requests for. So in this tutorial we're going to take the bare bones of a the verse section of a song - melody and chords - and look at the ways we can adapt it to this particular piano style. My book on cocktail piano: http://www.billspianopages.com/cocktail We'll look at the basics of chord extension, basic chord substitution, arpeggiated runs, chordal and melodic improvisation and a few other useful tips. This kind of lounge piano style is, as you might know, pretty closely related to jazz, and uses a lot of jazz piano techniques when it comes to messing around with chords and using different scales like pentatonic and blues for melodic improvisation. In actual fact, working on the cocktail style can be a very good way into jazz, as it uses many of the same techniques but within the context of a much freer and easier tempo: you don't have the pressure of a solid metronome beat. +++LINKS+++ My other book: http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really Patreon: www.patreon.com/billhilton Jazz for beginners playlist: https://goo.gl/NQoxci Piano for complete beginners playlist: https://goo.gl/5UqKP2 Facebook: http://fb.me/billhiltonpiano Twitter: http://twitter.com/billhilton

I am obviously not as proficient as the amazing Chico but you get the idea. Again, this is just the basics: Shooting, Flicking, and Gliding (remember use only the NAIL of the middle finger). I will examine some other tricks and techniques (left hand smash, ragtime, intros, etc.) in my next tutorial, How To Play Piano Chico Marx Style Part 2. Piano chords basics - make your progressions flow
http://bit.do/billsbook Playing piano chords effectively in comps and improvisations is all about choosing the right inversions and voicings to make progressions flow smoothly. The most important technique I look at here is choosing chord inversions and voicings on the piano keyboard that help your progressions flow naturally. When you first start learning chords, it's very easy and tempting to play them all in root position. Root position is when note the chord is named after is played as the lowest note of the chord; for example a C major chord with C as the bottom note. The problem with doing this is that you can end up with jumpy, disjointed sounds.  In styles of music such as 12-bar blues this is less of a problem, because jumping around between chords is a recognised style in that genre of music. However, with other styles such as modern pop ballads, you really do need to try to make your progression as smooth as possible. By using different inversions of chords you should be able to keep the different chords of your sequence closer together on the piano keyboard, which in turn will make your progression smoother. This should also make the chords easier to play because your hand stays in a relatively fixed position. Whenever you learn a new chord on the piano, try to play it in as many different inversions and voicings as you can. It’s really important to get to grips with inversions, particularly if you’re interested in jamming, comping or songwriting. If you’d like to know more about jazz, blues, or pop piano, go ahead and take a look through my earlier videos. If you liked this video you might also be interested in my book, How to Really Play the Piano, which is full of tips and guides on chords, harmony and improvisation.

Cocktail piano tutorial - the basics
Check out my cocktail piano ebook: www.billspianopages.com/cocktail This is an introductory piano tutorial for players who want to learn a bit about the cocktail piano style (sometimes called lounge or lounge bar piano). This is quite a cool style to try, because it's fun to play, and although it can sound very slick and impressive it's not actually that difficult. As I say in the tutorial, the main thing is to know your chords well, and feel comfortable with all the different inversions under your fingers on the piano keyboard. Once you know your chords - and we're talking things like major and minor sevenths, as well as the basic triads - it's quite easy to put together improvisations at the keyboard. Cocktail piano is typical very relaxed, so you can take your time and don't have to worry about being tied to a very firm beat. If you have any comments or questions on this, or on any of my other piano tutorial videos, don't hesitate to ask!

We have to admit-this journey took us a lot further than we expected. Retracing our steps reveals several factors that made this a reality. As we started arranging it we had serious writer's block. Perhaps some of the worst we've ever had. In fact, one day instead of writing we went around the entire studio with a can of WD-40 and coated every piece of metal to ensure that we were a squeak-free studio. Then on a whim we decided to back away and take an entirely new approach to the song-an African approach. It may seem random in retrospect, but at the time it was an exciting way to restart the arrangement. It was working, but our journey still was on foot until we called in Alex Boye, one of the most talented people we've ever met. Alex has this contagious energy that gave new life to the song and to us. He sings the tune in 4 different languages: Swahili, English, Yoruba (his mother's native language), and Alex's own African "scat" (we'll call it...Scafrican) =) Most of the words you hear are translated from the lyrics in the original Coldplay Tune. We're huge fans of Alex -- We bet you are now too! When we had finished the arrangement we all agreed that listening to it was like taking a journey to somewhere remote and ruggedly beautiful. How were we to depict this... READ MORE HERE: http://goo.gl/3NAzE9 We'd like to thank from the bottom of our hearts, Duane Fielding who offered the helicopters and SkyHawk http://www.skyhawkhelicopters.com for not dropping the piano... :-) Half-way through the first day of shooting we discovered that, as typical guys, we had forgotten to bring ANY food or water to this remote location. We had two options: one, wrestle a mountain rodent and harvest cacti or two, starve. Duane, our head pilot, took pity on us. He took off (literally) and moments later landed in a Wendy's parking lot, ordered 5 of everything (sadly, he couldn't use the drive through) ...took off again and brought us chicken sandwiches and hamburgers via airmail. Thank you Duane! Flying in your helicopter was a dream come true for us despite the lack of doors. =) Filming location: http://g.co/maps/mker7 (Southern Utah) All the instruments you hear are REAL instruments. Quick Tips: How To Create A Tom Waits Style Piano From Virtual Instruments
For many years Christian investigating how to create a Tom Waits style piano for that Jon Brion / Rolfe Kent style indie score sound. In this video he shows how by combining two pianos from two different developers along with an 'un-liberal' amount of compression you can create a piano sound that is both elegant and - as Mr Waits would say - has the appropriate amount of 'hair' on it.

Harry (aka Harry The Piano) plays the Harry Potter Piano Theme Tune in (almost) every style known to man. This was not rehearsed and the cameraman barked out ideas for the arrangement on the fly while Harry improvised around the Harry Potter theme tune. There's a lot of piano notes, and you'd never be able to play this from the sheet music as it was improvised - see if you can hear the other song styles that are hidden in the deluge! Solo vs. accompaniment style LIVE lesson
Solo vs. accompaniment style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mdn1UxQqro In this YouTube live lesson, Scott covered playing solo - by yourself with both melody and bass - and playing accompaniment - playing with a singer, bass player, etc. In accompaniment style - specifically with a singer - you don't need to play the melody line since the singer should be covering it. This frees up your hands to focus on chords and bass lines. To get a little bit better as an accompaniment player, you can advance to playing in the gaps of the melody while someone is singing by adding some flourishes. As a piano player, you have to be listening and thinking about the melody, that way you can get creative between the melody. Continue watching to see how Scott answering live questions from real students! ----------------- Scott’s life goal is to help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible. Autumn Leaves - Advanced (Bill Evans' Style) │Jazz Piano Lesson #35
Autumn Leaves Solo Piano and Trio Arrangement. Sheet Music Solo Piano Version): http://bit.ly/2oIZkjA Sheet Music (Trio Version): http://bit.ly/2pi2m1y Autumn Leaves Improvisation (Full Collection): https://goo.gl/MqDfev Jazz Piano Bundle Vol. 1 https://goo.gl/AzDrEa Blues Piano Bundle Vol. 1: https://goo.gl/YeedFl Notes: Solo Piano arrangement Bar 12: The chord symbol shows the right chord, but I missed to add a "b" front of the A note. Bar 31-32: I play the last G note on the "4+" instead of 1. When I wrote the arrangement 1 sounded really good, when I recorded it 4+ sounded even better :) Therefore I wanted to keep both in the video. Trio Arrangement: Bar 18: It is originally a Am7b5 chords, but Bill Evans plays a beautiful A7 chord these, so I wanted to add this to the arrangement, but keep the Am7b5 as a chord symbol, so we learn that we can often change the quality of the chords. If you know me a little bit, you already realized that I don't necessary follow my arrangements :) I like to keep it fresh, so I play around with the rhythm here and there. There are two cases when I would be very strict on following the music sheet as it is written: 1. It is a classical piano piece 2. It is a lesson for beginners about how to read music However, if you are a classically trained pianist I can understand that you watch this lesson and you might start to think: "This is not exactly the same! So where is the mistake? Is it in the sheet music or in his playing? What part should I follow?" The answer is very simple: Take these differences as a possible variations on the arrangement, because in the end this is what you really want to do: to play around with the rhythm and voicings every time you play through the tune. In this way, slowly, but surely you will stop think about right and wrong, and see everything as a variation. Don't get me wrong. I feel you man :) I started out as a classical pianist, but I was always into jazz music. When I entered the jazz school, I often told to my jazz piano teacher that he can't play this or that, because it is theoretically not correct, even if it is jazz :D Took me two years to understand what he means when he says: "Relax" Good luck and thanks for watching!
