Part 2 SQL functions- character function -case manipulation functions Previous Video Link :: http://youtu.be/5rx8Q4x4-qI Tool used in this tutorial is command prompt. This tutorial series is part of SQL expert exam certification training. if you are preparing for SQL certification you can use my tutorials. This SQL Tutorial is a part of free training. In case you miss the SQL functions intro video you can find the link in the description below. First let's see what these functions are. Upper (): This function takes a parameter converts it into uppercase and returns the new string. Initcap (): this function also takes parameter and converts the initial letter of or parameter into uppercase and returns the new string. Lower (): This function takes a parameter converts it into lowercase and returns the new string. Ok let's do some practical For this practical we will be using 2 tables First is dual table Which is a dummy table provided by oracle? And I have created another table again by the name of example. This will be our second table. Let's start with SQL function upper ( ); SELECT upper('hello world') FROM dual; As you can see I have used "hello world" completely in lowercase as parameter to SQL upper function. Execute it. Here, our result has given us a completely new hello world string which is in uppercase. Similarly you can also use SQL upper function to perform other DML Let's try This time we will work on our second table EXAMPLE; insert into example values (upper('manish')); first parentheses for values and second for SQL function upper. Let's check the result. As you can see here inserted value is in upper case. Lets compare it with simple insert query Insert into example values ('manish'); Execute it, i think now it's clear that when we perform simple insert DML the inserted value will be the same you provide. Similarly let's try SQL function initcap(); SELECT initcap('hello world') FROM dual; As you see here in result the initial letters of string hello world are in uppercase. Let's do the insert query insert into example values (initcap('hello world')); initial letters of string also are in uppercase. Let's try SQL function lower(); This time we have to write our hello world in all caps. SELECT lower('HELLO WORLD') FROM dual; Execute String totally in lower case. Similarly you can user SQL function lower in other DML like insert and all.

Another video brought to you by BeardedDev, bringing you tutorials on Business Intelligence, SQL Programming and Data Analysis. If you are not familiar with my previous video on creating a sample set of data please check out the video here: In this video I talk about how to use CASE statements in SQL Server. CASE Statements were introduced to SQL Server in 2008. They are used to evaluate conditions and return a result based on those conditions. CASE Statements can be used in SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, WHERE, HAVING. In this CASE Tutorial we look at a common use of CASE statements within SELECT and also the benefit and common downfalls when writing CASE queries. CASE Statement Syntax: CASE WHEN [condition] THEN [result] END SQL Queries in this video: SELECT CustomerId , FirstName , MiddleName , LastName , CASE WHEN CustomerId = 5995 THEN 'Unknown' WHEN Gender = 'M' THEN 'Male' WHEN Gender = 'F' THEN 'Female' ELSE 'Unknown' END AS Gender , DOB FROM dbo.CustomersSample Please feel free to post comments.

Oracle DECODE Function

04:31
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-decode-function/ The Oracle DECODE function lets you perform IF-THEN-ELSE functionality in your queries. It’s similar to a CASE statement. The syntax of the DECODE function is: DECODE ( expression, search, result [, search, result]... [,default] ) The parameters of the Oracle DECODE function are: - expression (mandatory): This is the value to compare. - search (mandatory): This is the value to compare against the expression. - result (mandatory): This is the return value if the search value matches the expression value. There can be multiple combinations of search and result values, and the result value is attached to the previous search value. - default (optional): If none of the search values match, then this value is returned. If this is not provided, the DECODE function will return NULL if no matches are found. If you compare this to an IF-THEN-ELSE statement, it would look like this: IF (expression = search) THEN result [ELSE IF (expression = search) THEN result] ELSE default END IF The parameters can be one of many different data types, and the return type is calculated from them. Earlier I mentioned it’s similar to CASE. So why would you use one and not the other? - DECODE is an older function, and CASE was introduced as a replacement for DECODE. - CASE offers more flexibility then DECODE - CASE is also easier to read and debug (in my opinion) The performance of these functions is the same, so if you’re considering using DECODE, I would suggest using CASE instead. For more information about the Oracle DECODE function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-decode-function/

CASE Function( IF..THEN..ELSE) in SQL ORACLE Query With Example

04:03
ORACLE/PLSQL: CASE STATEMENT The Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement has the functionality of an IF-THEN-ELSE statement. Starting in Oracle 9i, you can use the CASE statement within a SQL statement. The syntax for the Oracle/PLSQL CASE statement is: CASE [ expression ] WHEN condition_1 THEN result_1 WHEN condition_2 THEN result_2 ... WHEN condition_n THEN result_n ELSE result END --------- ARGUMENTS: expression is optional. It is the value that you are comparing to the list of conditions. (ie: condition_1, condition_2, ... condition_n) condition_1 to condition_n must all be the same datatype. Conditions are evaluated in the order listed. Once a condition is found to be true, the CASE statement will return the result and not evaluate the conditions any further. result_1 to result_n must all be the same datatype. This is the value returned once a condition is found to be true. NOTE: If no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return the value in the ELSE clause. If the ELSE clause is omitted and no condition is found to be true, then the CASE statement will return NULL. You can have up to 255 comparisons in a CASE statement. Each WHEN ... THEN clause is considered 2 comparisons. Lets apply this function on emp table. Emp table has 3 dept numbers like 10,20 and 30. So if I want to display the different dept names based on ID, I have to use IF THEN ELSE condition. IF deptno=10 THEN "DEPT1" ELSE deptno=20 THEN "DEPT2" ELSE deptno=30 THEN "DEPT3" This entire IF block can be achived using CASE. CASE deptno WHEN 10 THEN 'DEPT1' WHEN 20 THEN 'DEPT2' WHEN 30 THEN 'DEPT3' ELSE 'NO DEPT' END; Query used in Video: select empno,ename,deptno,CASE deptno WHEN 10 THEN 'DEPT1' WHEN 20 THEN 'DEPT2' WHEN 30 THEN 'DEPT3' ELSE 'No Dept' END from emp;

How to use the Oracle SQL PIVOT Clause

11:46
PIVOT allows you to "flip a table on its side", i.e. Columns to Rows / Rows to Columns. Previously we did this with DECODE or CASE. As of Oracle 11g, Oracle Database includes the PIVOT clause (and UNPIVOT). Oracle expert Geoff Wiland from SkillBuilders will demonstrate PIVOT, UNPIVOT, including the use of aggregate functions.

Grouping Sets in SQL Server

09:36
grouping sets examples in sql server sql server grouping sets order by grouping sql server 2008 grouping sets example sql server group by union all Grouping sets is a new feature introduced in SQL Server 2008. Let us understand Grouping sets with an example. We want to calculate Sum of Salary by Country and Gender. We can very easily achieve this using a Group By query as shown below Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country, Gender Within the same result set we also want Sum of Salary just by Country. To achieve the above result we could combine 2 Group By queries using UNION ALL as shown below. Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country, Gender UNION ALL Select Country, NULL, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country Within the same result set we also want Sum of Salary just by Gender. We can achieve this by combining 3 Group By queries using UNION ALL as shown below Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country, Gender UNION ALL Select Country, NULL, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country UNION ALL Select NULL, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Gender Finally we also want the grand total of Salary. In this case we are not grouping on any particular column. So both Country and Gender columns will be NULL in the resultset. To achieve this we will have to combine the fourth query using UNION ALL as shown below. Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country, Gender UNION ALL Select Country, NULL, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Country UNION ALL Select NULL, Gender, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees Group By Gender UNION ALL Select NULL, NULL, Sum(Salary) as TotalSalary From Employees There are 2 problems with the above approach. The query is huge as we have combined different Group By queries using UNION ALL operator. This can grow even more if we start to add more groups The Employees table has to be accessed 4 times, once for every query. If we use Grouping Sets feature introduced in SQL Server 2008, the amount of T-SQL code that you have to write will be greatly reduced. The following Grouping Sets query produce the same result as the above UNION ALL query. Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) TotalSalary From Employees Group BY GROUPING SETS ( (Country, Gender), -- Sum of Salary by Country and Gender (Country), -- Sum of Salary by Country (Gender) , -- Sum of Salary by Gender () -- Grand Total ) The order of the rows in the result set is not the same as in the case of UNION ALL query. To control the order use order by as shown below. Select Country, Gender, Sum(Salary) TotalSalary From Employees Group BY GROUPING SETS ( (Country, Gender), -- Sum of Salary by Country and Gender (Country), -- Sum of Salary by Country (Gender) , -- Sum of Salary by Gender () -- Grand Total ) Order By Grouping(Country), Grouping(Gender), Gender Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/grouping-sets-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/grouping-sets-in-sql-server_19.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

Oracle COUNT Function

04:43
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-count/ The Oracle COUNT function is used to count the number of rows from the column, or number of values, provided to it. It’s commonly used to find the number of rows returned by a SELECT query. The syntax of the COUNT function is: COUNT ( [ * | [ DISTINCT | ALL ] expression) [ over (analytic_clause) ] There’s a lot of square brackets here, indicating optional parameters and choices. This just means you can use the COUNT function in a few different ways: COUNT(*) COUNT(DISTINCT expression) COUNT(ALL expression) COUNT(*) OVER (analytic_clause) COUNT(DISTINCT expression) OVER (analytic_clause) COUNT(ALL expression) OVER (analytic_clause) It can be used as an aggregate or analytic function. The parameters of the COUNT function are: - expression: The expression to count the values of. This can be a column or a set of values, for example. - analytic_clause: This is used to specify the criteria for an analytic query. COUNT(*) is the most common way to use this function, I’ve found. As COUNT(*) is an aggregate function, like all aggregate functions the columns mentioned in the SELECT clause need to exist in the GROUP BY clause. NULL values are ignored by COUNT(expression), but they are counted when using COUNT(*). COUNT(*) has the exact same calculation and performance as COUNT(1). For more information about the Oracle COUNT function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-count/

Over clause in SQL Server

09:13
over partition by in sql server 2008 sql server over clause partition partition by clause in sql server 2008 over partition by clause in sql In this video we will discuss the power and use of Over clause in SQL Server. The OVER clause combined with PARTITION BY is used to break up data into partitions. Syntax : function (...) OVER (PARTITION BY col1, Col2, ...) The specified function operates for each partition. For example : COUNT(Gender) OVER (PARTITION BY Gender) will partition the data by GENDER i.e there will 2 partitions (Male and Female) and then the COUNT() function is applied over each partition. Any of the following functions can be used. Please note this is not the complete list. COUNT(), AVG(), SUM(), MIN(), MAX(), ROW_NUMBER(), RANK(), DENSE_RANK() etc. Example : SQl Script to create Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 4500) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3500) Insert Into Employees Values (6, 'Mary', 'Female', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (7, 'Ben', 'Male', 6500) Insert Into Employees Values (8, 'Jodi', 'Female', 7000) Insert Into Employees Values (9, 'Tom', 'Male', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (10, 'Ron', 'Male', 5000) Go Write a query to retrieve total count of employees by Gender. Also in the result we want Average, Minimum and Maximum salary by Gender. This can be very easily achieved using a simple GROUP BY query as show below. SELECT Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotal, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender What if we want non-aggregated values (like employee Name and Salary) in result set along with aggregated values You cannot include non-aggregated columns in the GROUP BY query. SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotal, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender The above query will result in the following error : Column 'Employees.Name' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause One way to achieve this is by including the aggregations in a subquery and then JOINING it with the main query as shown in the example below. Look at the amount of T-SQL code we have to write. SELECT Name, Salary, Employees.Gender, Genders.GenderTotals, Genders.AvgSal, Genders.MinSal, Genders.MaxSal FROM Employees INNER JOIN (SELECT Gender, COUNT(*) AS GenderTotals, AVG(Salary) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) AS MaxSal FROM Employees GROUP BY Gender) AS Genders ON Genders.Gender = Employees.Gender Better way of doing this is by using the OVER clause combined with PARTITION BY SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, COUNT(Gender) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS GenderTotals, AVG(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS AvgSal, MIN(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS MinSal, MAX(Salary) OVER(PARTITION BY Gender) AS MaxSal FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/over-clause-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/over-clause-in-sql-server_29.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

We will be using Countries table in this example. SQL to create the table Create Table Countries ( Country nvarchar(50), City nvarchar(50) ) GO Insert into Countries values ('USA','New York') Insert into Countries values ('USA','Houston') Insert into Countries values ('USA','Dallas') Insert into Countries values ('India','Hyderabad') Insert into Countries values ('India','Bangalore') Insert into Countries values ('India','New Delhi') Insert into Countries values ('UK','London') Insert into Countries values ('UK','Birmingham') Insert into Countries values ('UK','Manchester') Here is the interview question. Write a sql query to transpose rows to columns. Using PIVOT operator we can very easily transform rows to columns. Select Country, City1, City2, City3 From ( Select Country, City, 'City'+ cast(row_number() over(partition by Country order by Country) as varchar(10)) ColumnSequence from Countries ) Temp pivot ( max(City) for ColumnSequence in (City1, City2, City3) ) Piv
