6. Always log error (and backtrace) before re-raising the exception.

02:28
When you re-raise an exception, you will reset the backtrace (the track back to the line on which the error was raised) and might change the error code (if you raise a different exception to propagate the exception "upwards"). So it is extremely important to call you error logging subprogram (see previous Good to Know) before you re-raise an exception. How to Handle Exceptions Properly - Part 3

07:21
In this third video in the series, Steven switches gears to talk about to properly handle exceptions: build or find a single reusable logging procedure and call that. Only pass it variables from your current application state that cannot be obtained via built-in calls, like DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_BACKTRACE. 1. Exceptions raised in declaration section not handled in exception section.

03:31
This sometimes surprises a developer new to PL/SQL. The exception section of a PL/SQL block can only possibly handle an exception raised in the executable section. An exception raised in the declaration section (in an attempt to assign a default value to a variable or constant) always propagates out unhandled to the enclosing block. 3. Never hard-code an Oracle error number.

08:13
You can (and should!) name those unnamed ORA errors (never hard-code an error number). Oracle Database pre-defines a number of exceptions for common ORA errors, such as NO_DATA_FOUND and VALUE_ERROR. But there a whole lot more errors for which there is no pre-defined name. And some of these can be encountered quite often in code. The key thing for developers is to avoid hard-coding these error numbers in your code. Instead, use the EXCEPTION_INIT pragma to assign a name for that error code, and then handle it by name. Tom vs Steven on Exception Propagation

42:04
In the April session, Steven touched on his thoughts regarding where to handle exceptions (briefly: as close as possible to where it was raised). This conflicts with Tom Kyte's position that you should let the exception propagate up to the outermost block and then handle exceptions there. Tom can't speak for himself, but Steven is sure others will chime in. 00:00 Setting the stage 03:15 Tom Says 04:00 Steven Says 05:00 Chris Says 08:15 LiveSQL exploration 11:40 Avoiding redundant entries in error log 13:30 Using conditional compilation to direct output to screen 15:00 Chris says: handle expected exceptions, avoid WHEN OTHERS 17:30 Lots of discussion 29:30 Don’t forget to log the call stack 33:23 Picking a -20NNN error code for raise_application_error 35:29 Utility package by Sven Weller on top of utl_call_stack 38:02 Thoughts on tracing parameter values AskTOM Office Hours offers free, monthly training and tips on how to make the most of Oracle Database, from Oracle product managers, developers and evangelists. https://asktom.oracle.com/ Oracle Developers portal: https://developer.oracle.com/ Sign up for an Oracle Cloud trial: https://cloud.oracle.com/en_US/tryit

This tutorial will cover use of the try-catch-finally code block as well as use of the "throws" keyword. You can find the Java exceptions as a list here: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/Exception.html . Note that some of the listed exceptions have subclasses that are exceptions as well (e.g. RuntimeException). Thanks for watching! :D Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2B0D071533E7D993
