The Greatest Storm 1953 Full documentry "Timewatch" (2003)
"Timewatch" The Greatest Storm (2003) The Ferry which went down (MV Princess Victoria) was heading to larne port. Here is a photo of the harbour. In the distance there is a memorial for the disaster.- https://www.shutterspeedireland.com/product/larne-harbour-co-antrim-northern-ireland/ This video was uploadrd by https://www.shutterspeedireland.com/ In January of 1953, unusual weather conditions caused Britain's worst national peacetime disaster of the 20th century. A storm surge flooded the eastern coast of England, killing more than 300 people and leaving thousands homeless. Fifty years later, 'Timewatch' re-examines a calamity which is largely forgotten today. About the Princess Victoria. Sixty years ago, the MV Princess Victoria sank off the County Down coast in treacherous weather, with the loss of 133 lives. . One of the worst to happen in British coastal waters - dominated the headlines and devastated families and communities in Larne, Stranraer and further afield. 31 January 1953. Parts of western Europe and the UK were in the grip of freak weather from the north Atlantic killing hundreds of people. Timeline of disaster 0745: Princess Victoria leaves Stranraer 0900: Wave bursts through stern doors 0946: First emergency signal sent: No tugs available 1032: SOS call: "Car deck flooded" 1100: Portpatrick lifeboat given wrong directions 1300: Starboard engine room flooded - position critical 1308: Ship lying on beam end 1315: "We are preparing to abandon ship" 1330: Steamer passes Victoria without seeing her 1340: Passengers ordered to deck 1358: Last message from ferry's radio operator Larne man, John McKnight, 92, is one of the few remaining survivors. He was chief cook on the ferry and remembers that day vividly. (Deceased 2 weeks after interview) "I started work at 5.30am and the train from London arrived (in Stranraer) at 6am. Everything had to be prepared for breakfast, we served that to the passengers before setting sail. The ferry proceeded up Loch Ryan and soon we discovered that there was a severe gale blowing," he recalled. At the helm of the Princess Victoria that day was 55-year-old Captain James Ferguson. An experienced seaman, he had worked on the Larne - Stranraer route for many years. Jack Hunter, has written about the tragedy, With the stern doors irreparably damaged, water flooding the car deck and inadequate drainage on board, Captain Ferguson decided the best course of action was to try and steer the ship towards Northern Ireland. Stephen Cameron, author of a book on the Princess Victoria tragedy, said David Broadfoot was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his heroic actions. When Captain Ferguson made the final call to abandon ship, eyewitnesses say he was at the bridge as the Princess Victoria went under. It happened just five miles off the Copeland Islands and within sight of the north Down coast. On two previous occasions - in 1949 and 1951 - these same design faults had caused problems on the ferry. Jack Hunter believes if they had been fixed back then, things might have been very different. "Most certainly, it is a disaster that could have, and should have been avoided. The problems were discovered, they were known to be there, one assumes they were reported through official channels, yet nothing was done about them," Whatever the causes of the Princess Victoria sinking to a watery grave on that stormy Saturday afternoon in January 1953, the passing of time has not erased the sorrow felt by many, whose loved ones went down with the ship. They are commemorated every year at services in Larne, Stranraer and in Donaghadee -and on the forthcoming 60th anniversary, the overriding sentiment will remain the same. Never forget.

China's One Belt One Road Could Make Or Break This Poor European Country (HBO)
China’s One Belt One Road initiative could be the most ambitious infrastructure plan in history. With more than $900 billion committed across four continents, it's already the biggest sovereign infrastructure project ever conducted. But it's also a leap of faith towards a goal of reshaping global trade by reconnecting places along the historic Silk Road trade route with new ports, highways and railroads. While most of the projects are concentrated in Asia, China has also extended the initiative beyond its natural sphere of influence. Since 2012, it has made $15 billion worth of infrastructure commitments across central and eastern Europe. For a country like Montenegro, one of Europe’s smallest and poorest, China’s business represents a massive opportunity — and a massive risk. When the Chinese government guaranteed a loan to Montenegro to finance the construction of one 25 mile stretch of its first-ever highway, one condition was that a Chinese state contractor would do 70 percent of the work. But the World Bank believes that the Chinese loan — which Montenegro will pay back between 2020 and 2040 — is a threat to Montenegro’s long-term financial stability. VICE News Tonight traveled to the highway to find out where exactly it's leading. The Sea Route to Europe - June 2015
People risking their lives to reach Europe are often called migrants, but the current Mediterranean crisis is primarily a refugee crisis. UNHCR has compiled the most comprehensive data on sea crossings in the Mediterranean in the first half of 2015. Close to 130 thousand people have attempted this journey in the past six months. There is no sign of the pace slowing down and while deaths at sea have dropped considerably, the countries bearing the overwhelming bulk of the refugee arrivals are struggling to cope with the sheer numbers. The statistics regarding sea crossings like this one are astonishing….and as they continue to climb month after month….it becomes easy to forget that each one of the numbers is an actual person. And each one of these people here has been forced to make this terrible choice. Read more: http://tracks.unhcr.org/2015/07/the-sea-route-to-europe/ Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected] --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Withernsea bike ride from the sea, East Yorkshire coast, Part 2
Cycle tour east of Hull, around the little lanes & villages of East Yorkshire to the sea. Part 2: from the coast at Withernsea to Ottringham via Rimswell, Tunstall, Owstwick, Roos and East End - following the brown cycling waymark signs, August 2016. Includes a 'spot of bother' where the waymarked route has disappeared off a cliff into the North Sea! By the way, despite the 'road ahead closed' signs staying the track is still open to cyclists and the brown waymarked signs still pointing this way, I WOULDN'T ADVISE CARRYING ON TO WHERE THE ROAD MEETS THE CLIFF AND LOCATING THE 'PATH' ACROSS THE FIELD!!! POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS! Instead, retrace your steps to Tunstall and take a differnet route via North End to Hilston. Be sure to check out my other bike ride videos and the other (mainly Yorkshire) cycle ride segments - ideal for use at the gym on an exercise bike, treadmill, cross trainer, etc.

Integration of the Middle East in China's Belt and Road Project (Nader Habibi, 2017)
China’s President Xi announced the New Silk Road Initiative in September 2013 and the project has made substantial progress ever since. The New Silk Road is primarily a network of ground and sea transportation routes that facilitates trade and investment flows among more than 60 nations in Asia, Eurasia, Europe, Middle East and eventually Africa. The Middle East region (specially Iran and GCC countries,) is an important component of this strategy for two reasons: 1) Ever since 1993 China has become a net importer of crude oil and natural gas and Middle East is an important source of energy products for China. 2) Iran is an important rail transit route between China and Europe and this rail transit is close to completion. Iran is also an important north-south transit route for China and its Eurasian partners (Russia, Central Asian countries). Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries offer important sea ports for the Silk Road’s sea transport network to Africa and Europe. China’s economic relations with Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries has increased substantially in the past two decades despite multiple conflicts, terrorism, and political instability that is frequently associated with the MENA region. China has adopted a policy of neutrality in almost all of these conflicts and has presented itself as an economic partner that does not interfere in internal affairs and regional disputes among MENA countries. It has not taken side in the Saudi-Iran conflict, GCC-Qatar dispute, Israeli-Arab conflict and even the coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) extremists.

California to New York: A Complete Road Trip
This is a complete road trip compilation from Santa Monica, California to New York City over eight different days from June-September, 2017 - all recorded in time-lapse at 4fps (nearly 100,000 frames total). Of the 3,253 miles (5,235 kilometers) driven, about 3 miles of this drive is missing, mostly in Colorado near Poncha Springs. Nearly all of this drive was done in daytime, but there is about 10 minutes of this video done in darkness in Arizona (about 1:00:00 to 1:10:00). The weather was good for the most part, except from Pennsylvania all the way to the Bronx, before clearing up in Manhattan. This trip also includes driving through the solar eclipse of August 21 in Nebraska (at about 3:30:00), as well as driving over the old Tappan Zee Bridge in upstate NY, which permanently closed a month later with the opening of the new Mario M Cuomo Bridge adjacent to it. The states passed through are California (0:00:35-0:40:54) Arizona (0:40:54-1:40:26) New Mexico (1:40:26-1:41:09) Colorado (1:41:09-3:07:17) Nebraska (3:07:17-3:51:05) Iowa (3:51:05-4:24:17) Illinois (4:24:17-4:50:42) Indiana (4:50:42-5:10:51) Ohio (5:10:51-5:39:13) West Virginia (5:39:13-5:40:48 & 5:47:09-5:51:52) Pennsylvania (5:40:48-5:47:09 & 6:04:43-6:32:49) Maryland (5:51:52-6:04:43) New York (6:32:49-6:50:03) The highest elevation of the drive was 11,539 ft (3,517 m) at 2:28:10. The highest elevation anywhere on the U.S. interstate system is 11,158 ft (3,401 m) at 2:33:41. Both of these elevations are two of the three continental divide crossings; the other, at 2:04:38 (10,856 ft / 3,309 m), is the first. The hottest temperature of this trip was 110 F (43 C) in Needles, California (about 0:40:16), and the coldest temperature of this trip was 53 F (11 C) in Tusayan, Arizona (about 1:10:04) - only about 230 miles (370 km) from Needles. SAXA SEA GEYSER EAST ICELAND (Next to Road 1 in Stöðvarfjörður)
Near the sea, just outside the fishing village Stöðvarfjörður, is the “sea geyser” Saxa. Saxa is a unique natural phenomenon, where the ocean waves crash into a rock crevice and then shoot high into the air in impressive “eruptions”. The name Saxa is derived from the kelp and seaweed that are “saxað” (chopped) inside the crevice and then hurled into the air with the waves. Note that the sea stream has to come from the right direction for Saxa to be active.

East Yorkshire Coast bike ride - road has fallen off the cliff into the sea!
Short clip of cycling on 'the road to nowhere' (north of Tunstall on the East Yorkshire Coast just up from Withernsea where part of the road has fallen into the sea) - not recommended to other cyclists despite the 'road ahead closed' signs saying the track is still open to cyclists... Definitely taking a different route next time!! Apologies for bumpy quality of video as I push my bike across a field...

Kīlauea Volcano — Fissure 8 Flow: From Vent to Sea
A helicopter overflight video of the lower East Rift Zone on June 14, 2018, around 6:00 AM, shows lava fountaining at fissure 8 feeding channelized lava flows that flow into the ocean. Lava is still flowing out of fissure 8 unabated and the channel is full. At the start of the video, standing waves in the lava channel can be seen near the vent exit. The channel appears crust-free from vent to the bend around Kapoho Crater. A surface crust forms over the channel as it spreads out during its approach to the ocean. The overflight along the ocean entry is from north to south along the coastline. The ocean entry is active along the whole length - approximately 1 mile. Small litoral explosions are occurring and there are several plumes of laze. ---------- Find this video and thousands more at https://usgs.gov/gallery. Two pebbles’ Coast to Coast Walk
This is the coast to coast walk in England, from St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, covered 3 national parks. I did it in the fall of 2017. The tradition is to pick a pebble from west coast, carry all the way to east coast, and deposit to North Sea. I picked two, called this journey “Two pebbles’ walking holiday”. “Walking holiday” is the British way to say “Hiking trip”. Each year, about 10,000 people walked this route, most of them from west to east to avoid head wind. The route goes through a lot of pastures, gate has to be locked. There are different routes. The lower one is 192 miles where most of the people walk, but I did all the high routes, through mountains, about 210 miles. I heard someone did it in 37 hours, I was not that fast, I finished in 12 days. My longest day was 13 and half hours walking straight. I got up at 3am, left hotel at 5, 11 hours later, arrived at the most dangerous part, called striding edge. Two days before I was there, a man fell off the cliff and died. I was very carefully and make it to the hotel safe. It was very beautiful, but dangerous: the route was poorly marked, and went through lot of boggy moorland. I even had no idea what bogs meant before this trip. You will see a lot in the video. Anyway, I survived, but do not recommend anyone to do it alone. For 12 days, rain or shine, with these two pebbles, I crossed England on foot. I was a little emotional by the time to say goodbye to one of them. And I will carry the other one with me to the next adventure.

Best View of East Sikkim, Silk Route
The Silk Road or Silk Route was an ancient network of trade routes that were for centuries central to cultural interaction originally through regions of Eurasia connecting the East and West and stretching from the Korean peninsula and Japan] to the Mediterranean Sea. The Silk Road concept refers to both the terrestrial and the maritime routes connecting Asia and Europe. The overland Steppe route stretching through the Eurasian steppe is considered the ancestor to the Silk Road(s). While the term is of modern coinage, the Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk (and horses) carried out along its length, beginning during the Han dynasty (207 BCE – 220 CE). The Han dynasty expanded Central Asian sections of the trade routes around 114 BCE, largely through missions and explorations of the Chinese imperial envoy, Zhang Qian. The Chinese took great interest in the safety of their trade products and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route. Trade on the Silk Road played a significant role in the development of the civilizations of China, the Goguryeo kingdom (Korea), Japan, the Indian subcontinent, Persia, Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia, opening long-distance political and economic relations between the civilizations. Though silk was certainly the major trade item exported from China, many other goods were traded, as well as religions, syncretic philosophies, and various technologies. Diseases, most notably plague, also spread along the Silk Routes. In addition to economic trade, the Silk Road was a route for cultural trade among the civilizations along its network. The main traders during antiquity included the Chinese, Arabs, Turkmens, Indians, Persians, Somalis, Greeks, Syrians, Romans, Georgians, Armenians, Bactrians, and (from the 5th to the 8th century) the Sogdians. In June 2014, UNESCO designated the Chang'an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Road as a World Heritage Site. The Indian portion is on the tentative site list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Road The Evening of Departure by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org/
Most dangerous ways to School - PAPUA NEW GUINEA
They live in Papua New Guinea, an island in the Pacific Ocean, in the middle of one of the world’s largest rainforests. And some of them take a route to school which will blow your mind. That is certainly the case for 8-year-old Junior and his cousin Ruth. Their journey in the so-called ‘Land of 1000 Rivers’ is a five-day one which leads the students through jungles, in which new and unique animals are continuously being discovered, and in whose branches the notorious green tree python lurks. For the children these snakes are not just a threat but also a delicacy, because they hunt their own food every day, as well as climb steep mountainsides and cross countless rivers. Their journey to school is too risky to tackle alone; that is why father Michael accompanies his son and niece on this adventure. They travel over one hundred kilometres, and on this trip the children fear nothing more than the large Takali river. It separates their home - the jungle - from modern civilisation, and has already claimed the lives of many who have attempted to cross it. It is more than just a walk to school – It is a test in the vast jungle. And not all of the students will reach their destination...
