Zaha Hadid Architects and ETH Zurich develop knitted concrete system
A double-curved concrete shell made with a 3D-knitted formwork in a collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and ETH Zurich has gone on display in Mexico City. KnitCret is a new 3D-knitted textile system for creating curving concrete structures, without the need for expensive and time-consuming moulds. The colourful pavilion is called KnitCandela in homage to the work of Spanish-Mexican architect and engineer Félix Candela, who created dramatic curved concrete shells in his buildings such as the Los Manantiales Restaurant in 1958. Over two miles of yarn was knitted into four strips of between 15 and 26 metres in just 36 hours using a digital fabrication technique, then flown over from Switzerland to Mexico in suitcases. Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog. Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Garage Workshop Super Insulated Radiant Floor
How I made my Garages Super Insulated Concrete Floor. This building is going to be heated because it is both a garage and a shop. I set up radiant tubes in the floor for the hot water to circulate. This is a hydronic radiant floor. I insulated between the ground and the concrete slab because the slab is always going to be hotter than the ground. There is lots of rebar, probably over doing it a bit. The slab was 5,000 psi concrete and 5 inches thick. This slab is way overkill, but I didn't want to worry about it. Now I could add a lift in the future if I want to. The foam board used is high-density "Geo Foam" which came out of a factory in RI. The foam was great and I would use it again. I secured it to the walls using Loctite power grab adhesive. There is a link below. The floor insulation is a total of 14 inches (R-56) and the wall is 2 inches (R-8). The wall was later framed out for another R-20 of cellulose. Pressure Washing The Neighbor's Dirty Driveway - Satisfying!
When your neighbor goes on vacation and leaves their dirty driveway behind there is only one thing to do. Trespass and clean it for them, but not before vandalizing it first! In between the two was a 33" extension wand, much longer than the standard wand that comes with the unit. Dirty driveways being cleaned, moldy brick scoured fresh, and cleaning rain gutters are some of the oddly satisfying things pressure washers can give us! UIUC Concrete Crosstie and Fastening System Field Research
An extensive experimental program investigating the concrete crosstie and fastening system behavior was executed in July 2012 at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC). The program recorded loads, strains, and displacements of the track components under passenger consists traveling at speeds of 2-102mph, freight consists with car weights ranging from 263-315kips, and static responses from a track loading vehicle (TLV). The field experimentation served as part of a larger research program funded by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to improve the design and performance of concrete crossties and fastening systems. The results of this experimentation have provided insight into the transfer of forces and validation of a comprehensive finite element model. We gratefully acknowledge the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for funding this research effort under FRA BAA 2010-1. MCSC leads the way in robotic construction research
The Marine Corps is leading the way in employing advanced technologies and robotic construction. In August 2018, the Additive Manufacturing Team at Marine Corps Systems Command teamed up with Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force to operate the world’s largest concrete 3D printer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Champaign, Illinois. As a joint effort between the Marine Corps, Army and Navy Seabees, an expeditionary concrete 3D printer was used to print a 500-square-foot barracks hut in 40 hours. The Hot Shop facility at the Test Area North of the Idaho National Laboratory site was built with 7 foot thick high-density concrete walls reinforce with concrete. Taking down such a building requires the use of explosives. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Idaho Cleanup Project, demolition teams have been detonating a series of explosions demolition teams use explosives to cut archways walls. This demolition work will prepare the robust facility for the final demolition scheduled in mid-October. TAN-607, commonly known as the "Hot Shop," was built in 1954 to support research related to the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion project. Originally designed to handle remote work on highly radioactive components of nuclear-powered jet engines after each test, it was put to many other nuclear safety and accident research uses over the years. The Hot Shop is the last major facility to be demolished at Test Area North as part of the Idaho Cleanup Project.

Along with perusing the aisles at our local Lowe's store, we found that there was a massive inventory of products and fixtures on Lowes.com. My wife and I spent many nights choosing paint colors, tile designs, and room accents, all of which was made easy by searching Lowe's inventory. To save on project cost, we decided to re-use the large set of cabinets and long countertop that was already in the room. We planned on painting them a more neutral color and adding some modern hardware as a budget-friendly way to maximize storage space without having to rebuild cabinets. While the room was empty, we painted the walls and changed some light fixtures. I know that we would have to do some touch-up paint at the end, so we went ahead and painted the walls with some Valspar paint & primer in one. Now that the room was wide-open, it was time to get to work making the wall-hung elements while we waited for tile. While we waited for the tile to arrive, I began on the shelving. This project called for three shelves, two over the washer & dryer, and one more as a taller shelf with a hanging rod suspended underneath. All three shelves would be in the same style, some beefy cedar 2x4s suspended by some super minimalistic steel brackets. This beautiful, rustic sink is heavy, and when I ordered this fixture, I was unprepared for the amount of specialized components it needed. Once we hung the sink, I realized that the sink drain was an atypical size and had to special ordered. Josh and I went to our local Lowe's and pieced together the right fittings to mate the special, 3 1/8" drain to the existing plumbing. Josh made quick 3d-modeled solution to this irritating and complex problem. He made a two-part bushing that would fill the sink holes and slide together as you tightened the faucet to the water line creating a tight and secure mounting point. We printed it on our Lulzbot Taz 6 with the MOARStruder so the part was almost solid plastic. After a few quick iterations, the faucet bushings fit perfectly and the sink was all done! To clarify, the fixtures are beautiful and with the proper amount of research into the installation needs, they would have been mu ch easier to install. We selected a movable membrane underlayment from Schluter that the tile would sit on. This plastic material from Schluter needed to be fixed to the subfloor with mortar. Next, we mixed up the mortar for the tile. My wife and I decided on grey half-hexagonal tiles from Emser. I could arrange the shapes in a triangular/star pattern for a really cool design. Furthermore, we brought in the bench I made recently out of the Basswood slab and hung a line of coat & backpack hooks on the wall. With the washer & dryer in place, I could really see how awesome this room looked. But there was a blank space above the bench that we decided to fill with some cubbies.

With this blank slate, I had an opportunity to improve on my older automated system that worked off a key pad. I wanted the ability to simply turn on a tool and the dust collector would fire up and all the blast gates to close like they should. In a shop with many tools, there are valves that can isolate the suction to help improve air flow, the more tools you have, the more gates you would have to close in order to use one tool. With the help of an Arduino micro controller, I was hoping to automatically control these gates and have the DC turn on and off with the tool. There are commercially available systems that do this, but they are expensive and don't offer a way to add additional IoT functions later. Eventually, I'm hoping to connect the system to other sensors set up around the room to make the ultimate workshop of the future! I started by laying out the pipes that would connect the DC to each tool in the most efficient way. I found some drainage piping at Lowe's which was much cheaper than traditional PVC pipe. Because the walls of this drainage pipe were thinner than regular PVC, most of the blast gates and fittings wouldn't connect.  Josh designed and 3d printed a bunch of adapters to connect the whole system together. After connecting all of the tools to the pipes and fittings, we played it safe and added a ground wire from one of the pipes to an existing ground wire in the basement. This is said to prevent static buildup which could be dangerous in a dusty environment, so I added it just in case. With the ducting in place, I focused on the sensors that would read the amperage spike when each tool is turned on.  I made a housing that the tools would plug into to receive power and also connect to the voltage detector that connects to the Arduino. Once you turn on a tool, an amperage spike is detected and an input signal tells the Arduino to shuttle the appropriate blast gates and to trip the relay that controls the DC. The blast gates are controlled by a servo mounted on a bracket that swings an arm connected to the gate. When the servo moves, the arm pushes or pulls the gate open or closed. There are a lot of components to this system so managing all of the wires, plugs, connectors, and servos was very important. All of the connecters were pinned and protected with heat shrink, all of the wires were bundled and labeled, and the servos were dialed in to make sure the gates weren't hitting any hard stops. The system works great except for one component that kept giving us trouble. The 15 amp relay that was controlling the dust collector would fail after a few days. After some research, I discovered that they were a bit underpowered for the 2 horsepower DC. I have ordered a beefier relay and when we get it hooked up and working, it'll be listed here. Bamboo to Save the World | Pablo van der Lugt | TEDxErasmusUniversityRotterdam
Within a century most commonly used building materials will be depleted. Yet there is a rapidly renewable, carbon negative – yet often overlooked – solution: giant bamboo. Because of its ability to restore degraded land, reforesting with bamboo could mitigate climate change and provide an enormous source of raw material. Furthermore, industrially processed bamboo can be used in a multitude of modern applications. Not only in the building industry, but also in interior design and the textile, paper and energy industry. Pablo van der Lugt, PhD MSc Eng, is a passionate advocate of renewable natural materials such as bamboo. He is the author of 5 books on sustainable building materials, including Booming Bamboo (2017), which details the latest developments in design and architecture using bamboo. Building Engineer dr. ir. Pablo van der Lugt finished his PhD Research about the environmental impact of industrial bamboo materials at Delft University of Technology in 2008. After his PhD, van der Lugt conducted various ambassador roles in the green building industry and has remained connected as guest lecturer bio-based materials to Delft University of Technology. In the vision of van der Lugt in the essential transition towards a more circular economy there are tremendous opportunities for smart biobased materials made from fast-growing resources such as bamboo, to substitute carbon intensive, high performance materials such as tropical hardwood, steel, PVC and concrete. Van der Lugt has published extensively in both popular magazines as scientific journals and regularly provides (keynote) presentations on this topic to stakeholders and policy makers in the building industry. In October 2017 his book “Booming Bamboo” on contemporary bamboo design & architecture will be launched. If the density of the dye mix was light than water, the vortex would go up. If the dye was more dense than water the vortex would fall. We had to overcome SO MANY VARIABLES to overcome and we basically spent about 4 hours figuring each variable. Water or air to drive diaphram? Firing speed (too slow and they drift, too fast and turbulence tears apart secondaries) We did a complete redesign of the cannon 3 different times. The Dye loading method was changed several times At times We tried to maintain negative pressure on the cannon chamber… we also tried to put shutters on the front of the muzzle. Ultimately I decided it was ok to live with dye dripping out of the front. We had to premix the dyes and eventually we got there. Masonry Infill Test Structural engineering research UC San Diego
This research video was captured during shake-table tests of a three-story, reinforced concrete frame infilled with unreinforced masonry walls. The tests were performed by structural engineers at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and took place in November 2008 at the UC San Diego Englekirk Structural Engineering Center. The particular test that caused the partial collapse of the unreinforced masonry wall was the 7th test for this structure that exceeded the earthquake intensity that new construction in San Diego is designed for. The ground motion was 2.5 times stronger than the acceleration that was recorded in El Centro during the 1940 Imperial Valley 7.1 earthquake...
