Molly Crabapple on What it Means to Be An Artist in New York City

10:58
Molly Crabapple is a relentlessly prolific artist, writer and activist. Her murals adorn the walls of famous night clubs in New York and London, and her writing has been published in Vanity Fair, the Paris Review, VICE and the New York Times. Through illustration, Molly has documented some of the most pivotal political moments of the last decade, from the 2008 recession to Occupy Wall Street, to life inside Guantanamo Bay, the Syria’s civil war. Most recently, Molly published a memoir, “Drawing Blood,” that tells the story of her eclectic life and career. I wanted to understand what it really means to call yourself an artist in this crazy city and how she has managed to seamlessly blend her art with journalism, so I accepted her offer of drawing lessons at her live-in studio in Manhattan’s financial district. George Condo Interview: The Way I Think

39:03
George Condo was part of the 1980s wild art scene in New York. In this video, recorded in his New York-studio, the iconic artist shares his life-long love of drawing and thoughts on his artistic expression, which he describes as “artificial realism.” ”I kind of draw like you’re walking through the forest, where you don’t really know where you’re going, and you just start from some point and randomly travel through the paper until you get to a place where you finally reach your destination.” Condo studied music theory at college, but soon realised that it was too formal and rigid for him, and that he needed an art form that would give him more freedom. However, he still approaches his art like a musician, working fast and following the rhythm of the drawing or painting without “missing any of the notes.” The tempo, he feels, is very important when it comes to art. Condo wants his work to contain clear references to the different artists – from Picasso to Velasquez – they’re inspired by, but with a twist. His painting or drawings are about finding a way in which one can capture a person’s humanity through a portrait – capturing not just the outside but also the inside. Moreover, Condo aims to “turn negatives into positives”, portraying “the ordinary characters that make up our lives, whether it’s the janitor or the bus driver or the school teacher or the principal or the mailman or the truck driver. These are not the glamorous people that you see on the cover of Vogue Magazine, but they are what the world is composed of. And to give them a spot in the world is what I always admired about Rembrandt to a certain degree…” “I love drawing as much as painting, so why not make your paintings from your drawings, but literally have there be no defined sort of hierarchy between the two mediums?” Condo started making “drawing-paintings”, where you can’t distinguish e.g. paint from pastel, or a line made with a paintbrush or a line drawn in from and thus making the two mediums equal: “There’s no real difference between figurative painting or abstract painting, ‘cause it’s all painting to begin with… You don't’ have to follow any rules as a painter. If you’re making an abstract painting it doesn't mean eventually it can’t morph into a figurative one.” When a famous art historian asked Condo what he called the form of work he did, Condo thought of the description “artificial realism”. Artificial realism gives the painter the opportunity to go back and paint something in a realistic way while still portraying all that which is artificial in our world. In continuation of this, he finds that now everything seems to be “artificial realism” with the fake news that is all around us: “Art is the truth, and everything else is a lie.” George Condo (b. 1957) is an American contemporary visual artist working in the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. Condo mixes input from art history’s masters – such as Velasquez, Manet and Picasso – with elements of American Pop Art. He distorts and renews this material so that it stands out and becomes his own: a kind of strange hybrid that blurs boundaries between the comic and the tragic, the grotesque and the beautiful, the classic and the innovative. As part of the wild art scene in New York in the early 1980s, Condo was close to painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and worked for Andy Warhol’s Factory, applying diamond dust to silkscreen. Condo’s work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Broad Foundation in Los Angeles, Tate Gallery in London, Centre George Pompidou in Paris and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, among others. He is the recipient of an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1999) and the Francis J. Greenberger Award (2005). Condo lives and works in New York City. George Condo was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at his studio in Soho, New York City in September 2017. New York Academy of Art's Annual Summer Exhibition June 19 th - July 12th Flowers Gallery 529 W 20th Street New York, NY 10011 Opening Reception: June 19th, 6 -- 8pm New York, NY --- The New York Academy of Art is pleased to announce its Annual Summer Exhibition, a juried show featuring new works from the Academy's community of established and emerging artists. Opening on June 19th at Flowers Gallery in Chelsea, the show is curated by three celebrated members of the art world: Laura Hoptman, curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art, Patterson Sims, President of the Board of Independent Curators International and Matthew Flowers, Managing Director of Flowers Gallery. The exhibition aims to create a visual dialogue that disrupts expectations of the usual world of figurative art. "The Academy continues to prove, with its alums, instructors and students, that it is offering something unique to today's contemporary art conversation: top notch draftsmanship," says Laura Hoptman of the works she and her fellow curators selected from over from 700 plus entries. In collaboration with Flowers Gallery, the Academy will showcase its conceptually aware artists to a global audience. Flowers Gallery is an internationally recognized gallery with locations in London and New York. The dual programs exhibit a range of media by established and emerging artists. The gallery is an active publisher of prints and multiples, and has a growing department of contemporary international photography. Founded in 1982 by artists, scholars and patrons of the arts, including Andy Warhol, the New York Academy of Art is a graduate school that combines intensive technical training in the fine arts with active critical discourse. Led by a dynamic faculty including Senior Critics Steven Assael, Will Cotton, Vincent Desiderio, Eric Fischl, Judy Fox, Kurt Kauper and Jenny Saville, the Academy believes that rigorously trained artists are best able to realize their artistic vision. Academy students are taught traditional methods and techniques and encouraged to use these skills to make vital contemporary art. www.nyaa.edu GALLERY INFORMATION: Flowers Gallery is located at 529 W 20th Street, 3rd Floor, between 10th and 11th Avenues in New York City. Art Expo, New York - Fine Art Magazine - Abstract painting new movement "Carsonism" Canadian Artist

02:32
LISS GALLERY (TORONTO) 416-787-9872 INGLEWOOD FINE ART GALLERY - (CALGARY) 1-(403)-262-5011 2018 - CARSON PAINTINGS EXCEED ESTIMATES AT EUROPEAN AUCTION, DROUOT, IN PARIS - Article : http://urlz.fr/77Yd Fine Art magazine - N Y - USA, Victor B. Forbes - Art Expert Riding the bone-chilling north wind into New York City on his 2009 world tour, Charles Carson motored down the New York State Thruway from his home in the province of Quebec, Canada, roaring in like a March lion with a truckload of paintings to display in the glass cathedral known as the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Here, for the past 20 years New York's largest art fair has been a late winter tradition. All told, many thousands have introduced their work to American art buying public at Artexpo. Few alive, however, can boast of an art movement christened with their surname, as in Carsonism - a fascinating pictorial language of painterly writing imbued with magnificent colors and patterns; an active meditation of original ideas. The Spring Edition of Fine Art, featured Heroes of Creativity, Mr. Carson on the cover with a clever headline, ''Carson to the ism.'' Several Art historians around the world and museologist have deemed his style Carsonism, and his intricate and highly original works are as punctual and directed as the artist himself. These are strong paintings in two distinct yet related styles. The dimensional mosaic paintings with a buildup of the paint and then glazed combine logically and intricately to give the appearance of a polished sea of possibility, glimmering mirror-like in a bath of pristine luminosity. Christian Sorriano, Fine Art and Antiquities expert from Paris and President of Drouot Cotation, ''Art holds no more secrets or mysteries for a matured expert like myself... Far from common trends and cheap visual effects, Charles Carson shows each and every unique feature of his great poetic skills, offering in his work a breath of life, his own life , therefore questioning and delighting the minds and the trained eyes of the connoisseurs who hang it on the walls of their daily lives.'' Over many years, said Fine Art publisher Jamie Ellin Forbes, ''We've had the privilege of meeting so many artists. Some have risen to great acclaim and importance while others have fallen to the wayside. Each brings his or her own need to communicate their own dreamscape to the viewer and if you talk about this either in print or in person, you never know who you are going to be inspiring, what window you are going to open in their souls to communicate to the next level. The artist does this and such work is very important in all cultures. During this period of time, when people redefine values, they will find it much more so. Artists will become more important than they have been in the last ten or fifteen years outside of certain collectible concerns. Charles Carson's paintings have a unique language. They are dreamscapes that invite you into the space, which makes you a part of the process of whatever the moment is that the artist is describing. It's not a snap shot. You are invited into the imagination of the process and somewhere there's been an instigation or an inspiration involving the colors, the mystique. The line is defined through the paintings with the application of the form married through the colors defining the lines. The painting itself ¬ the composition ¬ therefore becomes very free, very available for people to enter into.'' ''Because the colors are incredibly clean, there's a tempo. You can't just paint and you can't extrapolate unless you know form; you have to know form, you have to be able to paint in order to extrapolate. Carson applies the paint with a tempo and a sense of color as if the light were coming through. The pieces are very energetic, almost kinetic ¬ and there's a definite form lent through the application of the color. I don't know what Mr. Carson has in his mentality as he paints, but it looks to me as if he's painting the subconscious vision of what he sees; that he steps into the space between space, the dream space ¬ and starts to paint the colors as they vibrate, as one form transitions from dream to reality and reality to dream and the abstract in - between. The colors are incredibly clean, which is rare ¬ and they are built, have definition and are textural. You would think that it's simple, but it is not. This is a very complex and difficult mode of expression to arrive at and you have to have an understanding of harmony and tempo to have a significant balance throughout the piece in order to create the composition. The result is the school of thought Carson is forming ¬ Carsonism, Carson to the ism.'' There are elements to this work that I have not seen elsewhere. I have not seen this technique done elsewhere . Have you? ''Isn't this the founding of a thought process or a school? Did anybody do Braque or Leger, or Pollock before they did themselves?''

EXHIBITION North by Northeast Kaspars Podnieks, Krišs Salmanis Curated by Anne Barlow, Courtenay Finn, Alise Tīfentāle Art in General is delighted to announce that it will be working in collaboration with kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, Latvia to curate the Latvian Pavilion for the 55th Venice Biennale. The Biennale exhibition, titled North by Northeast, will present new site-specific works by Latvian artists Kaspars Podnieks and Krišs Salmanis. The presentation will explore the artists' relationship to the natural and ever shifting man-made world -- including perceived borders and centers in Europe -- and that investigate the concepts and conditions of identity, uncertainty, and the 'in-between'. As part of this exciting new collaboration Art in General is pleased to present a pre pavilion presentation in the storefront Project Space, March 5 -- March 30, 2013. The exhibition features existing works by Kaspars Podnieks and Krišs Salmanis that are intrinsically related to their Venice installation. Kaspars Podnieks (b.1980) has been participating in exhibitions since 1998. His work encompasses photography, video, installations, and environmental objects. His most recent group exhibitions include: Generation of the Place: Image, Memory and Fictions in Baltics (2012) in Kaunas, Lithuania; Preview Berlin (2011) in Berlin, Germany; Life in the Forest (2011) in Bialystok, Poland and solo exhibitions Unusual Place (2010) and Communicating Vessels (2011) at kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, Latvia. Krišs Salmanis (b.1977) works with photography, video, installations, animation and graphics and has participated in exhibitions internationally since 1996. His latest solo exhibitions include: Light (2012) in CAC Vilnius, Lithuania; The Fragility of Trust (2012) at gallery Alma in Riga, Latvia; The Earth may be spinning around the Sun, but the World is turning around me (2011) Raum linksrechts in Hamburg, Germany; and Moving Landscape (2011) at Galerie fűr Gegenwartskunst in Bremen, Germany. Contemporary Art Centre resides in a red 19th-century brick warehouse located near the Riga Central Market. The name of kim? is no less than an abbreviation of an insistent question "what is art?" ("kas ir māksla?" in Latvian). Founded in 2009, the organization offers a certain range of activities including exhibitions, lectures, talks, public library, publications and other events related to recent art, theory and social issues introduced by the means of a local and international corpus of ideas, beliefs and individuals. kim? supports the development of emerging artists, theoreticians, curators, philosophers and others, aiming to provide a responsive context to their work and to make those critical practices accessible to a wider audience. www.kim.lv © Appleseed TV © Echo Gone Wrong magazine

Ryan McGinley by THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE

03:10
Ryan McGinley New Jersey-born Ryan McGinley studied graphic design at New York's Parsons School of Visual Arts. In 1999 he sent 100 magazine editors and artists he admired a 50-page book of photographs he had produced on his desktop computer entitled The Kids Are Alright. The book consisted of exuberantly bacchanalian images of his friends in New York City. In these images, fellow artists like Hannah Liden, Dan Colen, Dash Snow and Emily Sundblad masturbate, roll joints, tag walls, and scamper naked in the woods. Like Nan Goldin and Larry Clark, McGinley shot intimate portraits of friends far on the margins of social acceptability. But the humanity and poetry of his predecessors' work came from the pathos, pain and gallows-humor in their images, whereas the grittiness in McGinley's photographs glowed with the exuberant bliss of being young, hot and acting out. The day that Index magazine received the book, they called McGinley to fly to Berlin and shoot for editorial. In 2003, McGinley was the youngest artist (at age 26) to exhibit for a solo show in the Whitney Museum of Art. The tone of the 20 large-scale color prints presented in the show, as part of the Whitney's 'First Exposure' series showcasing emerging photographers, was described by Holland Cotter in a New York Times review as 'relaxed and playful, as if the world were on recess'. In an art world and mass culture pathologically obsessed with youth, McGinley's well-crafted and carefully selected images actually did what photography claims to do - they captured fleeting moments. His models were not professional kids paid to produce some simulacrum of youthful cool. Instead, they were actually members of that blessed demographic, and so was he.
