1920s Chicago Jazz: Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orch. - I Know That You Know

03:05
Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra (Jimmie Noone, clarinet; Joe Poston alto sax; Earl Hines, piano; Buddy Scott, banjo; Johnny Wells, drums) -- I Know That You Know (V.Youmans /A.Caldwell), Brunswick 1937 (Originally recorded by Vocalion, 1928) NOTE: Jimmie NOONE (b.1895 Cut Off, Louisiana -- d. 1944 in LA, California) American jazz clarinetist who is regarded as one of the greatest jazz clarinetists, along with Johnny Dodds, Benny Goodman and Sidney Bechet. Noone's playing is lyrical and sophisticated, and certainly makes more use of "sweet" flavoring. Noone was an important influence on later clarinetists such as Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. He started playing guitar in his home town and at the age of 15, he switched to the clarinet and moved to New Orleans. He studied with Lorenzo Tio and with the young Sidney Bechet, who was only 13 at the time. By 1912, he was playing professionally with Kid Ory, Papa Celestin, the Eagle Band before joining the Original Creole Orchestra in Chicago in 1917. The following year, he joined King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, then in 1926, he started leading the band at Chicago's Apex Club, the Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra, in which the influential pianist Earl Hines was playing for a time. In 1943 he moved to Los Angeles, where he died suddenly of a heart attack. The Kid Ory's band played for him the blues titled "Blues for Jimmie" on the radio, and the number eventually became a regular feature for the Ory band.

Bob Fosse - And All That Jazz

02:51

Brilliant Jazz Clarinet Improv Solo in Downtown Chicago

While I was walking down Adams & Wabash in Downtown Chicago, I couldn't help but to stop and listen to this brilliant jazz clarinet player. He took my request to play a jazz piece, completely improvised. He gave me his card after I recorded him. His name is Kaliq Woods, and it turns out he's one of Chicago's best clarinetists. Check him out and let me know what you think!

COURS - BROADWAY DANCE CABARET CHOREGRAPHIE "CHICAGO - ALL THAT JAZZ"

03:58

Eddie Condon - Chicago And All That Jazz Chicago

Dixieland music, sometimes referred to as hot jazz or traditional jazz, is a style of jazz music based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. The first use of the term "Dixieland" with reference to music was in the name of the Original Dixieland Jass Band, whose 1917 recordings fostered popular awareness of the new style of music. At that time, there was no issue of sub-genres of jazz, so "Dixieland" referred to the band and not the music. A revival movement for traditional jazz, formed in reaction to the orchestrated sounds of the swing era and the perceived chaos of the new bebop sounds of the 1940s (referred to as "Chinese music" by Louis Armstrong), pulled "Dixieland" out from the somewhat forgotten band's name for the music they championed. The revival movement included elements of the Chicago style that developed during the 1920s, such as the use of a string bass instead of a tuba, and chordal instruments, in addition to the original format of the New Orleans style. That reflected the fact that virtually all of the recorded repertoire of New Orleans musicians was from the period when the format was already evolving beyond the traditional New Orleans format. "Dixieland" may in that sense be regarded as denoting a the jazz revival movement of the 1940s and 1950s as much as any particular sub-genre of jazz. The essential elements that were accepted as within the style were the traditional front lines consisting of trumpets, trombones, and clarinets, and ensemble improvisation over a 2-beat rhythm.

The ingredients of a classic house track

With a disco sample and drum machine house music took over the globe . Become a Video Lab member! http://bit.ly/video-lab House has become one of the most popular forms of electronic music since its inception in the late 80’s. It began in Chicago, when local DJ’s and music producers experimented with remixing disco vocals over hard hitting drum machines. They would soon play a huge role in popularizing the sound and distinguishing house music as a global music genre. Chicago gospel singer, Loleatta Halloway, is one of the most widely sampled artists in house music history. Her song “Love Sensation” has been sampled nearly 300 times, including on Black Box’s “Ride on Time”, the notorious hit that became the best selling single in the U.K in 1989. Jazz Organ Summit Finale in Chicago

09:12
This was our Jazz Organ Summit in Chicago at the DuSable Museum of African American History. Charlie Earland produced this show and asked Jimmy McGriff and Lonnie Smith and Johnny Hammond Smith to join him. This was the last time Johnny Hammond Smith would ever play. He died eleven days after we did this show. Greg Rockingham is on drums and Bob DeVos plays guitar. The music from this night was released on Cannonball Records. Enjoy this because it represents a truly historic event for jazz organ fans. Visit my web site for more jazz organ clips: www.doodlinlounge.com Pete Fallico
