Fur in Fashion Debate: Is it okay to use animal products for fashion? – Today’s Biggest News
One of the world's most famous fashion brands has decided to stop using real animal fur in its clothing. It's part of a growing movement in the fashion industry and something animal rights activists have been campaigning for, for a long time. Prada is an Italian luxury brand that makes very, very expensive things like this $30,000 hand bag. I would know because I am a fashionista myself. That's definitely a real photo. Now the fashion house has announced that starting next year all of their new products won't use animal fur. Prada's been under a lot of pressure from consumers and animal rights groups who say it's cruel to kill an animal and use its skin for fashion and they're not the first major brand to ditch fur. While many are happy with the decision, some still don't have a problem with fur and argue that there are times when it might go to waste if the animals are already being killed for food or environmental reasons. Others reckon the ban doesn't go far enough, saying it should also include animal products like leather and crocodile skin. - DRONES COLLECTING WHALE BOOGERS What's the best way to learn more about whale populations? By catching their snot of course! As you can imagine, that's as tricky as it sounds. Instead of using whale sized tissues, waterproof drones are collecting the boogers that fly out of a whales blowhole. The scientists say they can learn a lot about whales like they kinds of bacteria & viruses that are in their bodies and apparently it can also tell them if a whale is pregnant! - JAPANESE LAST NAMES This is Shinzo Abe. he's the Japanese PM and it turns out we, and pretty much everyone in the international media, has been saying his name & a lot of other Japanese names wrong. You see, in Japan, surnames come before first names so Shinzo Abe should actually be Abe Shinzo. For a long time people in other countries like Australia the US & UK have just decided to write & say Japanese names like they would their own: first name first then the surname. But now Japan's foreign minister Taro Kono or should we say Kono Taro is asking if we would kindly stop doing it because they have some big events coming up like the Olympics. Fair enough. - BOOMERS SQUAD Australia's announced a ripper squad for this year's Basketball World Cup. Aussies have been pretty successful in U-S the last few years and it shows in the line-up! Nine NBA players have signed on to wear the green and gold including Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and of course Ben Simmons. - SAM KERR We all know Sam Kerr is a star and now she's been named the third best female soccer player in the world! That's according to the BBC's women's footballer of the year award which is voted on by fans. Ada Hegerberg nabbed first place while Danish player Pernille Harder came second. - STANLEY CUP And there's a fairytale brewing North America's National Hockey League. For the first time in 49 years the St Louis Blues have scored a place in the Stanley Cup, which is like the NHL's grand final. Halfway through the season the Blues were at rock bottom but they staged an epic comeback, winning 30 of their last 45 matches! The final series will be tough. They're facing six-time champions the Boston Bruins who actually beat the Blues when they were last in the final in 1970. But who knows? Stranger things have happened! - LEAFY SEA DRAGON HABITAT Here's a lesson for you - if it has eyes, then it's probably not a piece of seaweed! These incredible sea creatures have been surprising visitors at this aquarium in Southern California. It's just built one of the world's biggest habitats for leafy and weedy sea dragons - species which are threatened in the wild. - CHACOAN PECCARY BABIES These little furry piggy looking creatures are a pretty surprising sight because for a long time the world thought they were extinct! They're called Chacoan Peccaries and it was only in the 1970s that a small population of them was discovered hidden away in South America. It's believed they'd been quietly living there for possibly millions of years! Wow! Now these little babies are the first of their kind to be born in this zoo in Prague. So far only one other zoo in Berlin has been able to breed them and it's hoped the new additions will help to keep this special creature around for millions of years to come.

Why this Gucci knockoff is totally legal
Knockoffs are everywhere in fashion. So is the controversy they inspire. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Allbirds says Steve Madden copied their sneakers. Gucci says Forever 21 ripped off their green-red-green stripes. Adidas says Zara knocked off their Yeezys. In the Constitution, Congress has the power to stop copying by giving authors and inventors “the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.” But there’s a catch. These protections must “promote the progress” of creative industries. Conventional wisdom holds that copying kills innovation and hurts industry progress. But within the fashion industry, experts like New York University law professor Christopher Sprigman say the ease of copying is actually good for creativity. The Cost of Fast Fashion
Since the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse, the fast fashion industry has seen huge pressure to change its unethical ways. But 6 years on, has anything actually changed? Millions of workers around the world face life threatening work environments as they make cheap clothes for the western world. These clothes will be thrown out only weeks later, due to poor quality. These contribute to massive amounts of pollution and the growing threat of climate change. It's time for us to realise the cost of our shopping habits. Why Did the Nation's Top Fashion University Cut Ties With the Fur Industry?
Parsons School of Design—the leading fashion-design university in the U.S.—has ended a nearly 15-year partnership with Saga Furs, through which it promoted career opportunities and fur-industry information. Now, the school has cut all sponsorships and student incentives with fur companies and is instead hosting a series of panels with PETA on vegan fashion and sustainable design. The first panel discussion featured designer Todd Oldham, who's known for his iconic '90s runway shows. Burak Cakmak, dean of Parsons' School of Fashion, says, "We are teaching the future leaders of the fashion industry that they can have a positive impact on the environment by not using animal products, and still create beautiful designs." How Zara Took Over The Industry Using Fast Fashion
Today, we’re going to look at the history of Zara, its parent company Inditex, and the fashion industry in general, to see how it became possible to create such a high churn rate in the fashion industry. An average American will throw away 77 pounds of clothing every year. And that’s true across the majority of the western world. That is two suitcases of clothes, just dumped. Zara’s first store opened in 1975, in a city called A Coruna in northern Spain. Owners Amancio Ortega and Rosalia Mera had wanted to name it after a favorite Greek film called Zorba the Greek, but a bar on their street had already beat them to the punch, so they settled for Zara, since they had already had the letters made for the sign. Inditex was set up in 1985 as holding company for Zara and the manufacturing plants. They went on to set up and take-over many other high-street brands that follow Zara’s format; such as Pull and Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius. They now have over 6000 stores globally. Zara’s early business model was to create similar copies to high end lines but at an affordable price. As they expanded through Spain, Ortega pushed the idea of instant fashion, where Zara could react incredibly quickly to new trends so they could put new lines on the shelves in a fraction of the normal time. -----------------Support the channel: Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/alexberman SUBSCRIBE for more videos like this: http://youtube.com/alxberman?sub_confirmation=1 Check out our Digital Agency Marketing Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/hr/podcast/digital-agency-marketing-1/id1200614219?mt=2&ls=1 Need lead generation or marketing support for your agency? A solution for a sustainable fashion industry | Fredrik Wikholm | TEDxGöteborg
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Every year we throw away 30 kg of clothes, and the textile industry is one of the world’s top 5 polluters. So, how can we make the fashion industry more sustainable? It’s easy, claims social scientist and Creative Director Fredrik Wikholm, we just need ethics, environment and economics to be buddies. With his new innovation “The Rag Bag” Fredrik challenges the business to take action now, before it’s too late. It was the creative mindset and will to change, rather than skills in textile design that brought Fredrik Wikholm and his snowboard collective to start up a fashion brand that focused on sustainability. Now he’s taking recycling to the next level with an open-source innovation institute to pave ways for the fashion industry to make more sustainable choices. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Episode 2 // FUR REAL
For years, fur has been one of the most incendiary topics in the fashion industry, but the fur debate has reached new heights in recent months, as increasing numbers of brands implement bans on using animal skins in their clothing. In this episode, I investigated the hypocrisy of the fur debate and the hierarchy of suffering in which leather sits higher up in the food chain than fur. My first interview was with MA London College of Fashion graduate and designer currently at Haider Ackermann, Valentin Devriese. He explained the issues he faced whilst working with the material and the amount of time and detail it takes to produce each garment. He told me, “the whole cycle is hypocritical. Some fur protestors that are against fur wear leather shoes… Luxury is all about distinction and wearing something that other people can’t wear. That’s why I don't understand how a luxury client would buy a fake fur coat that any woman could buy”. Fashion turns away from real fur. But is fake fur just as bad?
For many years the world's most exclusive designers have resisted calls to stop using fur. But the industry's finally reached a turning point. Versace is the latest label to go fur-free. Artisans have popped up making fake fur, including in Australia. But some claim these new clothes are still not ethical enough. Avani Dias from Triple J's Hack program reports. Using roadkill for fashion | DW Documentary
Pamela Paquin wants to transform the fur industry. The U.S. designer uses roadkill to make fur accessories. Could this be the new chic? Pamela Paquin makes muffs, wrist cuffs, hats and more from roadkill - which she calls ‘accidental fur.’ Whenever the U.S. designer hears of a dead animal by the side of the road, she goes to remove the pelt, and then leaves the animal’s body where she found it, as food for other animals. She finds there is nothing distasteful about her job. Her aim is to transform the fur industry. As the founder of ‘Peace Fur,’ Paquin is hoping to show the fashion world that killing animals for their pelts is unnecessary. A typical day for the designer can begin with skinning a rabbit by the side of the road, and end at a high end fashion shoot. People in the fashion world are taking note of her unusual sourcing technique and praise the designer’s down to earth approach. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. A Feminist Perspective on the Fast Fashion Industry | Jeanine Glöyer | TEDxAUBG
More than 80 billion garments enter the market every year but rarely do we think about where they come from. Jeanine will shatter our perspective and offer a new meaning to the phrase “fashion victim.” Focusing on the ongoing trend of informally hiring women for labor-intensive work in the textile industry and linking that to women’s position in society, Jeanine will open our eyes to the behind-the-scene perspective of the fast fashion industry and provides us with a solution – the ecologically and socially sustainable fair fashion label Jyoti–Fair Works she created with the idea to bring joy to producers and customers alike. Jeanine first witnessed the working conditions in the textile industry during a voluntary service in India in 2008. Appalled by what she had seen, she developed a strong desire to learn about possible ways in which the exploitative structures of this industry could be altered. Having completed her Bachelors in International Relations with a focus on International Human Rights Law, she was curious to dive even deeper into the subject and thus specialized on global commodity chains and workers’ rights through completing her Masters in “Labour, Social Movement and Development” at SOAS – University of London. Convinced that a different approach to producing apparel is possible, she founded and is today leading the Fair Fashion Label Jyoti – Fair Works. Moreover, regularly organizing workshops, talks as well as lectures for pupils and students, she is deeply engaged in the debate on how structures of exploitation can be transformed in a way that every single person involved in the production of our clothes benefits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

New York Fashion Industry Report for June/July 2006
This month: FICA's 'Fur Fashion Week' for fall/winter 2006 which was held this past week is really a misnomer; since it wasn't 7 days but 3. Eleven shows were held in individual showrooms around town (primarily the fur district, 7th Avenue, and 5th Avenue and 57th Street). And although it ran smoothly and was well organized thanks to Sandy Blye, if I had one criticism, it was that the schedule really could have been tightened up and condensed into 2 days.
