Culling inspiration from all things North Africa, Mara Hoffman invited us to embark on a camel caravan through the desert with a final destination of Ancient Egypt. Hoffman caught our hearts using the visually stunning, yet accessible pieces we've come to know and love. Rugs of Morocco, camels in the Egyptian desert, and Bedouin jewelry are just a few of the inspirations found at the Mara Hoffman Fall/Winter 2014 show. Held at the Salon at the Tents in Lincoln Center, Hoffman sent out a parade of flowing beaded caftans, fringed ponchos, and desert-mimicking stacked prints.
Nick Irwin, CATWALK by TIGI global creative director, paired up with Hoffman to develop intricately effortless hair that speaks perfectly to the confident, sultry, and glamorous girl. Inspired by the art and textiles of North Africa, Irwin created a soft wave in the hair with a tightly woven braid at the end, gilded in gold as if she just dipped her hair in gold paint. Irwin and his team started with a deep, clean side part on the left side. Next, the team gently misted the hair with water and CATWALK by TIGI Fast Fixx Style Prep, using a round brush to blow dry smooth. After additional CATWALK by TIGI Fast Fixx Style was applied to smooth hair to the head, the team used CATWALK by TIGI Session Series Styling Cream from the nape of the hair through the ends. The team then began to French braid the hair, securing the hair with a small elastic band and using a diffuser on low heat to set the wave. Once set, the team removed the braid and worked CATWALK by TIGI Session Series True Wax through the ends of the three individual sections of the hair. Finally, using a three-plait technique, the team braided the last couple of inches of the hair and finished off with CATWALK by TIGI Session Series Finishing Spray and a gold-colored hair spray.
To match the 'back to the desert' braid, famed make-up artist Alice Lane of Maybelline wanted to create a look that captured the spirit of a nomadic desert nymph. The models rocked thickly lined Master Kajal Kohl Liner (due out Fall 2014) on the lower lash line complimented by a golden glisten on the top lid. Lane and her team used the Sunlit Bronze Eyeshadow palette mixed with a dab of Baby Lips for a light touch of gloss in the center of the lid. The team then created a warm, natural glow with Master Glaze in Warm Nude and "buffed" the lips with Color Sensational--The Buffs in Maple Kiss. To finish off, the team used Color Elixir Gloss in Nude Illusion on the lips for a neutral nomadic look.
Hoffman has built her business on an unwavering adoration of bold prints, and this season was no exception. Most looks were paired with brilliant golden cuffs and bands attached to the models' necks, fingers, wrists, and forearms to create a crazy cool look. Silhouettes of structure evolved into vivid displays of grandeur with gold and jewel tones set against billowing black. And for those of you who have established a long-term relationship with the color black, check out Hoffman's stunning handwork on her effortlessly chic black silk braid blazer and bustier.
