Apparently, popularity can be predicted and companies are buying it. Increasingly, fashion brands are relying on trend forecasting agencies in order to create the “next big thing.” However, fashion buyer Mahir Can Işik says these predictions are putting creativity at the risk of irrelevance. (Currently, more than 12,000 brands get their predictions from the same agency.) Işik calls for a renaissance of self-expression and individuality in order to break free from the sterile suggestions of forecasters. Using needle and thread to create "beauty and horror", the dolls of Undercover became a kind of stylish laboratory experiment, resulting in a series of lacey creatures named Grace, aptly named for the spontaneous spirit with which they were brought to life. Hybrid creatures that fall somewhere between the feminine and the alien, the realistic and the fantastic, the dolls were a first step in challenging the standard fashion show stereotypes while proposing a new way of representing rock 'n roll spirit behind the Spring/Summer 2010 Collections, and were complemented by a photographic installation by the artist Katsuhide Morimoto. Undercover's mission has always been to emphasize the driving "concept" behind every collection, an exercise in communication that goes beyond any single garment to reveal the greater vision that lies beneath. Violante Nessi is a Fashion Designer. She narrates her story, full of struggle and perseverance, to inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Beginning as a working student in Milan, she moved through New York and London gaining the experience needed in the field that she always loved: fashion. She eventually came back to Italy to sharpen her craft and formulate a plan, until she found the strength and confidence to launch her own brand "VIOLANTE NESSI" and open her first boutique in London. Her life learnings are: preparing for any situation, starting small, allowing things to take their time, and always being true to oneself. Violante Nessi was born in Bologna in 1990 by Chilean mother and Italian-German father. From 2009 to 2012 she studied Fashion Design at Istituto Marangoni in Milan and at Central Saint Martins College in London. During her studies she worked as a Sales Assistant at Marc Jacobs. In 2012, Violante moved to New York where she worked within the design team of Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Altuzarra. In 2014, she returned to Europe to become Design Assistant at Tom Ford in London. In 2015, Violante went back to Italy to build the foundations of her namesake brand. In 2018, she launched her official online store and she moved to London where she opened her first boutique, while rigorously maintaining all production in Italy with local artisans and suppliers. Artist and illustrator Indu Harikumar’s new project #identitty tries to break the stigma around women and breasts. I believe that one of the best ways to express your feelings in art. And feminist art is art that explicitly seeks to both express individuality and demand equality. Amongst contemporary Indian feminist artists, Indu Harikumar is a prominent name. Mumbai-based illustrator Indu Harikumar started practicing art again by sharing her everyday life and drawings on blogs. Having spent 23 years working on various websites, forums, and blogs, Indu mostly shares her art online now on Instagram to her 12k subscriber base. In a fun telephonic conversation, Indu shared with me how her journey began, her popular #TinderTales project and how she is seeking to reinvent the conversation around women’s breasts today, with #Identitty, moving it away from the male gaze. The Internet as a place of refuge Talking about her journey, Indu says her parents would send her for drawing class as a child. She later studied fashion and history, and illustration and embroidery were her favourite subjects. However, she never worked in the fashion industry, instead handling corporate websites for about seven years. While working in the digital space, she found herself getting involved in children’s publishing, looking at digital children’s content and that’s when she started drawing and creating on an everyday basis. When asked about using the Internet as a medium to exhibit her art, Indu says that she has always looked at the Internet as a place of refuge, a place where she could write and share like no one was watching.
