Business Letter Formats

02:12
Format conveys message; know your company’s preference. Above all, no matter what format you use, your letter should not look lopsided, crowded, or spread out. Letter format refers to the way your letter looks on the page (whether in print on a screen) - where you indent and where you place certain kinds of information. The most formal, preferred, and frequently used business letter format in the world of work is the full-block, but you should also be familiar with the modified-block and the semi-block. A letter is as an indispensable tool of communication in business. Business letters are used to sell the products, make inquiry about customers or prices of goods, seek information and advice, maintain good public relation, increase goodwill and perform a variety of other business functions.

How To Write A Cover Letter (Example Included)

04:02
A well written cover letter could increase your chances of an interview by 50%. We'll show you how to write an awesome cover letter that impresses employers. Source : https://www.zipjob.com/blog/write-awesome-cover-letter-samples-included-zipjob/ Writing a good cover letter is a crucial step in the job search process, yet many people don’t write one or don’t put in the time to write an effective one. So how do you write the perfect cover letter? This short video will give you the necessary steps to create an effective cover letter that helps you land interviews. We often hear people ask - Do I need to send a cover letter? The answer is yes. You should always send a cover letter unless the job posting says no cover letter is required. The point of a cover letter is to give a bit of an introduction as to who you are, your interest in the position, and why you think you’d make a good fit. It also adds a human touch to the plain old boring resume. Ok, So let's get started…. The first thing we’re going to cover is the format and then we’ll cover the things you absolutely need to mention in your cover letter if you want to stand out from the hundreds of other job seekers. Ok let's take a look at how a cover letter should be formatted.. As you see in our template, your header should be your name , contact number and email address. You can keep it similar to the header on your resume but don’t include your address. You should then include the receiver's name, title, company name and address. If you can’t find the name of the hiring manager, you could leave that off. You can address the letter as “dear hiring manager” but always try to make an effort to find out the hiring manager in charge. You should try to keep your cover letter between a half a page to ⅔ of a page long. Remember that most employers only spend a few seconds going through your resume and cover letter. No one wants to read an in- depth page long cover letter. Three paragraphs is a good length and we’ll go through what each paragraph should contain - we’ll then show you an example of an excellent cover letter. Paragraph 1 should be an introduction to who you are and the position you’re applying for. Include where or how you found the opening, The title and a job ID number if there is one. You should also lead into the next paragraph by stating a brief summary of qualifications or your interest in the position. The second paragraph should discuss your qualifications and the achievements which show why you’re a good fit for the position. Remember that you want to stand out from the other hundreds of candidates that are applying for the position. So don’t just give examples of what you did in your last position, show how you went above and beyond. Mention a few examples of quantifiable or measurable achievements in your career. Use compelling language and don’t repeat the information in your resume. Try to bring your experience to life and this will encourage the reader to look into your resume in more detail. In the third and last paragraph, Close it out by saying you feel that you’re a good fit based on your qualifications. Remember, you should include a call of action - which in this case would be inviting you to an interview. Ask them to give you call and schedule in interview. And the The last thing you should do is thank them for taking the time out to consider you. Lets put this template into action. Here is an example of a great cover letter: Hi Susan, I’m writing to you to express my interest in the Accounting position you have open on your company website with the job ID# 11220. I am a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and am confident that my experience and skill set would be a great match for this position. I have a strong knowledge of accounting principles backed by experience I have gained in the last 12 years. In my previous position, I managed the accounting of a financial consulting firm with over $30 million in revenue. I not only met expectations but exceeded them by increasing cash flow by $4 million. I helped achieve this by changing our accounts receivable policy and negotiating better contracts. There is more depth on my experience and skills in my resume which I would appreciate you looking over. I am certain that my experience and skill set would make me a great candidate for this position as well as a great asset to your company. Please give me a call at the number above to schedule an interview at your convenience. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, John Smith So there you have it. Remember to include these 3 points in your resume - * Who you are * Your qualifications and how they can benefit the employer * And a call to action asking to schedule an interview.

Writing Skills: The Paragraph

14:33
The paragraph is the most important unit of a well-written essay. The paragraph has a specific structure and standards that make it effective and enjoyable to read. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: https://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin. In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line. So let me just make sure you understand what an indent is. This is an indent, the first line a little bit pushed in or you can make sure you skip a line between paragraphs. But don't do both. If you skip a line, don't indent. Okay? That's the main thing. Now, that's in terms of the way it looks. In terms of content -- and this, I can't stress this enough -- very, very, very important: one central idea in one paragraph. Okay? I've seen many people, I've seen many essays where you start a paragraph talking about one thing, and then you go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. So for example: if you start a paragraph and you're talking about apples, continue to talk about apples. If you go to oranges, that's maybe okay because you're still talking about fruit. But if you start with apples, go to oranges, go to bananas, and then end up with monkeys in space there's a bit of a problem; the reader has no idea what you're talking about. One paragraph, one central idea. Now, make sure that you tell the reader what this central idea is. This is your thesis statement. Okay? It's a very general sentence. All it does is introduce the topic of the paragraph, nothing else. All the details comes after. So speaking of details, we'll talk about details in detail, but all other ideas, all the other sentences, all your sentences with the details must directly relate back to the main idea. So let's say here is your thesis statement; very general, every sentence after must relate back to that thesis statement. Okay? You can't go off to another idea. Everything must support this, must talk about the same topic. Very important. Okay? How long should your paragraph be? Technically, a paragraph could be one sentence, but in an academic essay that rarely happens. But it could be any length you want, as long as you're still on that one topic, as long as you still have things to write and things to say about that topic, say it. If you have four sentences, fine; if you have 10 sentences, also okay. Again, for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students: four, five sentences should be your limit. You can't be too long because you don't have time and you're going to start making mistakes. So now, the details. Very important to have lots of details. Why is this topic important to your overall idea of your essay? Not only tell me what is the topic, what is the thesis statement of the paragraph, make sure you explain to me why this is important to the general idea of the essay. Give me your reasons. Now, why is it important? And then reasons, why you think what you're saying supports this idea. Examples, always use examples because giving me the reasons is okay; examples make me see exactly what you're trying to say. Very easy for me to understand what you're trying to say. Now, in terms of flow, in terms of the way the reader can approach the paragraph, you have to have bridges. What is, what do bridges mean? Basically, when you have one idea in this sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence. Every sentence must have a link to the next sentence. This creates flow, makes it much easier to read and understand, and it keeps you on the one topic. Now, key terms. If you're talking about something specific and you have to use a key term, use it as many times as you need to. Otherwise, avoid repetition. Try not to use the same word more than once in one paragraph. Okay? For example: if you're using the word "moreover" in the paragraph, don't use it, don't use "moreover" again -- use "in addition to", use "furthermore", "another", etc. Try to avoid using one word more than once, especially in the same paragraph.

How to make hanging indents on your list of works cited

06:11
In this video I show you how to format a bibliographic entry in Microsoft Word so that it appears with a hanging indent regardless of how you set or alter your margins or font. The key is to understand how word regards as a paragraph, any line of text unbroken by a paragraph return (the return key on your keyboard). So you select your entry and "format paragraph" and find the "hanging" button in the indentation choices. The video also demonstrates the "show nonprinting characters" option and how to alphabetize citations by asking Word to "sort" them.

How To Use CSS text-indent

01:37
How To Use CSS text-indent https://youtu.be/CvG60RYLVv0 The CSS text indent property adds space to the left of a text sentence. If you are applying the indent to a paragraph it only affects the first sentence. If you want to move the entire paragraph you will need to use padding. The text indent accepts pixels, ems and points as values. That's all there is to it. I hope this video helps you! If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below.
