Astrakhan: Fishing on the Volga - life

05:16
http://www.euronews.com/ This week, Russian Life takes you to the Volga Delta near Astrakhan, where Europe's largest river flows into the Caspian Sea. This unique environment makes the region a fisherman's dream. Far from the city bustle, the Astrakhan nature reserve is a peaceful oasis. Created in 1919, this vast expanse of land 30,000 kilometres square is a wildlife paradise. Humans are few and far between. The only people we come across are fishermen. They come here all year round from across Russia and even from abroad. "Fishing here is excellent. There's plenty of fish of all kinds. You just have to know how to catch it," says fisherman Vladimir Razin. From their camp sites on the banks of the Volga river, fishermen take an hour-long boat ride to where the river runs into the Caspian sea. Igor Belyakov, a local, has been coming here with his son since Artyom since he was five. For them, it's about more than just catching fish. "When you stand here, you feel like you are one with nature. The thread, the fishing line, becomes a bond - it makes you feel a connection to the huge river and the world around you," says Igor, a journalist and fishing expert. He says fishing isn't about killing animals - he returns his catch to the river. For him, it's an intellectual game. The aim is to trick the fish's instincts - the challenge includes choosing the right bait, tracking the fish and using the right technique to catch it. "You get this crazy adrenaline rush when the fish bites and you feel the tug on your line. All you want is to catch it, you want to be the best, and you want it to be a big fish," says Igor's son Artyom. Like many others, Igor and Artyom are doing this for fun: they're aiming for a big catch of four kilos or more, but mostly, they just enjoy the process. For many locals, however, this is how their earn a living. Their catch is sold and shipped to canning factories onshore. Sergey Andreyev, a local fisherman, isn't satisfied with what's in his net: "That's a poor catch. We can do better. The weather is bad, so there isn't much fish," he says. Factfile: Astrakhan region * Fishing in the Volga Delta continues all year round, but May and June are generally considered the most pleasant * Crucian carp, sazan, vobla, pike, perch, cat fish and numerous other kinds can all be caught in the Delta * There are several private lodges in the Astrakhan region offering comfortable stay, boats and gamekeepers service * Many fishing enthusiasts prefer living in their makeshift tent camps along the river shore * A flight to Astrakhan from Moscow takes about two hours; a drive from the airport to the fishing sites will take another hour But it's not just the weather that's to blame: large fish are growing scarce. Igor blames poaching and overfishing. He says some of those who come here from abroad - speardivers, in particular - get carried away and kill a lot of valuable fish. "I'm afraid there will come a day when there won't be many fish left. That doesn't mean we'll stop fishing - we'll keep on fishing, even if our catch is smaller. But there is a saying that goes: when the last tree has been cut down, when the last fish has been caught, only then will we realise that we can't eat money," he tells us. As we return from a long day out on the river, our gamekeeper Dmitry shows off his trophy - a huge carp. It will be used to cook the dish that crowns any successful fishing trip: ukha, a tasty broth prepared over an open fire with freshly caught fish. "It's our local speciality - the Astrakhan ukha. We have our unique way of cooking it, with water, fish, potatoes, bay leaves and green parsley," he says. The broth is indeed delicious, and very welcome after a hard day's fishing. That's it from the Astrakhan region. Join us in two weeks' time, on our journey from Moscow to Vladivostok, on the world's longest railway line, the Trans-Siberian. See you soon in Russian Life. Astrakhan

00:31
Astrakhan sits astride the Volga north of the Caspian Sea and is Russia’s face on that multinational body of water. The city reflects much of the region’s cultural and religious diversity. There are large communities of Kazakhs and Azeris, as well as Islamic Tatars. While many visitors use Astrakhan mainly as a jumping-off point for the Volga Delta, the city merits a day or two of exploration in its own right. There’s a long, handsome riverfront that’s ideal for evening strolls as the sun sets across the river. The striking white kremlin, a symbol of Russian dominance since the 16th century, holds two beautiful churches and several museums. Across the canal, north of the kremlin, the stone mansions and churches of the European and Christian centre give way to Tatar and Persian sloboda (suburbs) with their wooden cottages, mosques and quaint courtyards, where garlands of drying vobla fish flutter in the breeze.

Heads of state from Caspian littoral states meet in Astrakhan

Leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan agreed on a joint statement to outline future agreements on cooperation in the Caspian region. The sides decided to hold five-party emergency services exercises next year. The Caspian Sea's oil and gas deposits, and large fish resources have made it a subject of territorial negotiations among the five states during decades. Iranian president called on the littoral states to take necessary action to protect natural sea resources and said that the Caspian Sea countries must do their best to turn the region into a center for development and cooperation. Astrakhan Region

01:01
The Astrakhan Region is located in the Volga Delta, and this defines it. Here, the great Russian river flows into the Caspian Sea, creating natural habitats for numerous fish, waterbirds, and plants - a true paradise for fishermen and hunters. Lotus flowers in bloom, fabulous dawns and sunsets, vast stretches of wetlands, curious fish and sunbeams dancing on water -- this unique area of Volga tributaries and islands, stretching for tens of kilometres, has been known since ancient times as Astrakhan.

Poisonous toxins get into Caspian Sea through Volga delta

06:44
Sokolov pits are among most dangerous man-made objects of the Astrakhan Region. These former oil storage pits are situated near the regional capital, in the vicinity of the villages of Tatarskaya, Bashmakovka and Pervoe Maya. Their dangerous section reaches the bank of the Kizan River and borders on the public beach, located on the bank of the Volga River. During hot weather, the toxic content melts, gradually penetrates the natural water intake and then gets into the Caspian Sea through the Volga delta. For details, see: http://eng.kavkaz-uzel.ru/articles/32288/

Caspian Fish & Caviar

07:03
Azerbaijan on the map resembles a bird that flies from the east with wide open wings. Baku, the capital looking to the Caspian, is a rapidly developing industrial city. This ancient country, once an important stop on the Great Silk Road, has many exciting places - the Bronze Age petroglyphs, medieval minarets and mosques and the famous Azerbaijani carpets. About a third of the population of Azerbaijan lives in the capital, the largest metropolis of the South Caucasus. This beautiful city is located around the ideal bay, the Baku Gulf in the lower part of the Absheron Peninsula. Baku and the 70-kilometer peninsula enjoy sunny and surprisingly dry weather. Azerbaijan is still a Klondike of "black gold". So they call not only oil, but also black caviar. Its extraction is now strictly controlled and limited by state quotas. The best caviar in the world is the caviar of the Caspian Sea. Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan border the Caspian Sea, which is the largest lake in the world. The surface of the Caspian Sea is 374,000 square kilometers. km. One of its advantages is the prevalence of 80-90% of sturgeon in it. From sturgeon get caviar, which is a "symbol of luxury". Sturgeon is in fact a prehistoric species of the animal world, surviving to this day since the time of the existence of dinosaurs.

Seals, caviar and oil: Caspian Sea under threat from pollution

01:12
Bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, the 1,000-kilometre-long Caspian is the world's largest inland body of water. It is home to a range of native species -- from the seals to Caspian turtles and the famed beluga sturgeon -- and also to vast energy reserves, estimated at 50 billion barrels of oil. But pollution from the extraction of that oil and gas, along with declining water-levels due to climate change, has left many species under threat and the future of the sea itself at risk.

Iran’s domestically-made destroyer, Damavand دماوند, has officially joined the Navy’s fleet in the Caspian Sea درياي خزر north of the country. The country’s state-of-the-art training frigate, equipped with modern radar, electronic and reconnaissance systems, was delivered to the Iranian naval forces stationed in the northern port city of Anzali بندر انزلي in a ceremony on Monday. High-ranking Iranian officials, including Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani علي شمخاني, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan سرتيپ حسين دهقان and Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari دريابان حبيب الله سياري attended the ceremony. Speaking at the event, Shamkhani described the Caspian Sea as a sea of peace and friendship, saying the Islamic Republic has played a unique role in providing security, particularly energy security in the sea. The Caspian Sea is bounded by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan Republic, Iran, and Turkmenistan Also Sayyari said Damavand is a Jamaran-class destroyer which is more sophisticated than Jamaran جماران. Earlier in May 204, Sayyari said the Damavand frigate is equipped with advanced sea-launched drones as well as cruise missiles. The Iranian commander said that efforts have been made to employ cutting-edge technology in building the frigate, stressing that Damavand would also be equipped with more advanced cruise missiles than those of domestically designed and built Jamaran frigate. The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically-built frigate, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf خليج فارس in February 2010. The 1,420-ton frigate is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities and has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad. The vessel, equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons, also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface missile systems. Damavand, however, is longer but lighter than Jamaran frigate and is capable of tracking and targeting aerial, surface and sub-surface targets simultaneously. It is equipped with a cruise missile system, torpedo launchers, 40-mm and 76-mm cannons, radar processing systems as well as tactical surface and aerial radars. more videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ez_xPh8tDkY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2fFhzt9bjo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suBI2FF0wvM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVtqc-9AJtk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cQOnL2pWSY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HcPel7OFqo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLlx4DDgwyE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUnGijPDvfI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RlzKr9cG-k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9d9ypIVjT4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P1E8NopPog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SOBEtWpqb4

October 19, 2015 (Persian calendar 1394/7/27) An Iranian Navy fleet has docked at the southern Russian port city of Astrakhan in a bid to boost friendly maritime ties between the two countries. The naval fleet, comprised of the domestically-built Damavand destroyer and two missile-armed vessels, dubbed Peykan and Joshan, anchored in Astrakhan on Thursday after three days of sailing. The fleet aims to convey a message of peace and friendship and boost mutual cooperation aimed at maintaining security in the Caspian Sea. The Iranian naval forces onboard the fleet plan to meet Russian commanders. The Iranian fleet will then leave Astrakhan for the port city of Baku in Azerbaijan. This is the first foreign mission by the Damavand destroyer. It is also the second trip of an Iranian naval fleet to Russia since 2013. Iran’s Navy sent two warships to Russia in June 2013 to consolidate maritime relations between Tehran and Moscow. In August, two Russian warships "Volgodonsk and Mahachkala" also arrived in the northern Iranian port city of Anzali for a three-day stay with around 130 personnel on board in a bid to boost friendly maritime ties between the two countries. Iran’s domestically-built Damavand destroyer The state-of-the-art Damavand destroyer, equipped with modern radar, electronic and reconnaissance systems, was delivered to the Iranian naval forces stationed in Anzali in March. In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems. The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically-built destroyer, Jamaran, in the Persian Gulf in February 2010. The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities. It also features highly-advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface systems.
