New vs Old Room Fire Final UL
This video, made by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Testing) shows the danger of "modern" fires compared to the danger of fires occuring 40 years ago. Keep your eye on the clock! The room on the left is furnished with old fashioned furnishings, made mostly with natural materials (wood, cotton, wool, silk, etc). The room on the right is furnished with stuff made largely with synthetic material. Most synthetics are petroleum based. Think of them as frozen gasoline. The legacy room fire is just begining to really spread at the time the modern room is burning from floor to ceiling. Even the air is burning! Think about this next time somone tells you that "response time" will only be slightly increased. If you or a loved one is in the fire apartment or house, a slight increase is NOT acceptable. Please pass this along to everyone you know that lives in NYC. The Mayor seems not to understand the meaning of "essential service".

MISSION -- VISION -- BRANDING and IMAGE By Patrick Dengel Each business should have three basic elements -- MISSION STATEMENT, VISION STATEMENT and THE BRANDING or IMAGE that the business wishes to portray in the public world. A mission statement represents the purpose that the business carries forth its operations. Primarily....Why does it exist? What is its purpose? What does it do? And what is the direction the business is going. If anything, it is a matter of fact statement about the business or organization. A Mission Statement is not a slogan but gives a good description of the business. In regards to the VISION Statement, it is a way of keeping all to pay attention to the critical objective of that business or organization. It is the reaching toward the business or organizations' fullest potential and keeping the motivated and inspired. It can be the emotional application that drives the business. The Branding or the image is the visual, emotional, rational and cultural image associated with a company or product. It is the organization's illustration of what it stands for and often based on the public's perception of how that business or organization has followed through with the Mission and Vision Statement. Images and Branding have fullest established a drawn image through signs, colors, images and key words. Successful companies have spent much time and money on establishing their Branding. It should also be noted that Branding of Products and Branding of Services are two different aspects of a successful business. BRANDING OF PRODUCTS IS EASIER THAN SERVICE. Once products have been established and public confidence and trust has been established, it will take a lot to dissuade the general public from the ascertained image. Likewise, the opposite is true. If the public sees the product poorly, it will take much time, effort and expense in overcoming public views. The Branding of a Service can lose its image quickly because services are usually performed by employees. Employees are a business's best assets or its worst liabilities because they represent the business or organizations' Mission and Vision. Depending on the style of Management, on the new employee training and during the daily operations, depends on whether employees continue to follow the Mission and Vision. Missions, Visions and Branding should be looked at, should change as needed and should be discussed, but employees should know their Mission, Know their Vision and understand what their Branding Image is. A Business owner should be able to go to its youngest to oldest employees and ask what each (3) are. Some will know it by heart and some will paraphrase, but if those who do not know, then who is at fault. Let me make one final point about Mission, Vision and Branding Statements. The more complex the Mission statement (I have seen 2 pages of Mission Statements on one organization), or the more general the vision statement and the more unaware of what the Branding or Image really is by employees, the less successful that business will be because they are continually trying to find themselves.

NECN's Dream House: J. Schwartz Design
Transformation: Bringing an Old Seaside Bungalow Back to Life. In the spring of 2007, Jeff Schwartz, who has had a home in southern Maine for 24 years, was approached about a neglected old bungalow on a very special piece of land. The prior owners were four siblings and their spouses and, as is often the case, these people from different parts of the country and with different life priorities could not agree on how to care for and maintain this tired old bungalow they had inherited from their parents. Further, the house had served as a coast guard barracks in the Second World War and in no way took advantage of the beautiful site and surroundings. It was overgrown, dark and cramped on the inside and had fallen into general disrepair. All of the improvements made over the years were piecemeal and not in harmony in any way. The siblings, seeing the handwriting on the wall, decided to sell. Jeff and his wife, Nancy Moss, a public relations executive, bought it with a vision of what it could be. They would honor the modest bungalow genes of the house and its relationship to its neighboring dwellings, while making it truly wonderful and every bit their own. Transforming it without tearing it down. Jeff and Nancy had four key goals for the modest house (approximately 2800 SF with the addition of a rear roof dormer and some strategic bump-outs) and the site: - It should look from the outside like it had always been there, sit well on the site and complement its neighbors. - It should meet their lifestyle needs. They are empty nesters whom enjoy the seaside year round while hosting guests throughout the summer. Every part of the house should be used. All of the spaces should seduce you into entering and enjoying them. - It should be surprising and wonderful with beautiful natural light within, with nooks and built-ins and materials indigenous to the Maine coast. - It should bring the seacoast and the neighboring architecture indoors in unexpected ways and be enjoyed four seasons of the year. Design and planning work commenced in 2007 and continued through the fall of 2008, when final design plans were submitted to and approved by the local Coastal Commission. The house was gut renovated and now is on a new chapter of a new life, completed May of 2009. The owner Jeff Schwartz's company is called J. Schwartz Design.
