Charles Aznavour - Comme Ils Disent
In 1972 Charles Aznavour stunned France with this realist chanson about a transvestite dancer, his gay life and sad loves. “I was the first to write a song in France about homosexuality,” he says. “I wanted to write about the specific problems my gay friends faced. I could see things were different for them, that they were marginalized.” The song’s lyrics describe the life of a gay man, his crossdressing at Paris clubs by night, his close relationship to his mother. “I always wrote about things that others might not have written about. We don’t mind frank language in books, the theatre or cinema, but for some reason still to sing about such things is seen as odd.” It has since then become a classic, sung in English as "What Makes a Man a Man", by artists such as Liza Minelli and Marc Almond.

Magnum lesbian wedding
Even an unlikely product like Magnum (the ice cream, that is) has used a lesbian wedding in its commercial. Unilever ice cream brand features a stylish gay wedding in its spot, and introduced the tagline: “Pleasure is diverse.” Clearly displeased by this blatant example of the left wing media pushing the gay agenda, an angered citizen filed an official complaint to Unilever Australia, lamenting the “Promotion of lesbianism during family viewing time.” They continued, “I know this will not be taken seriously as ramming this down our throats now happens daily.” Unilever stood firm in this instance, stating that the married couple kissing at the altar was consistent with prevailing community standards “which treat gender and sexual preference fairly, impartially and tolerantly”, and added, “Viewers will understand the message that while everyone, including same sex couples, can enjoy the pleasure of eating Magnum Ice Cream, same sex couples would also enjoy the pleasure of getting married.” The complaint was dismissed.

John Lewis' Christmas Ad 2018, with Elton John
For their traditional Christmas advert 2018, John Lewis & Partners worked with musical legend Elton John. He sings his power ballad “Your Song”. The emotional two-minute video tracks John’s road to stardom - from playing in pubs to sold out stadium shows. The film begins in present day and works backwards chronologically through Elton’s life right until the moment on Christmas morning when he received the special gift that changed his life. The video also tracks John’s signature fashion choices, from a sequinned stars and stripes suit to a pink mohawk. Speaking about the advert, John said: “The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family. The advert marks a break from the department store chain’s use of furry animals in previous years. Craig Inglis, customer director said: “The ad tells the story of why Elton’s piano was more than just a gift and we hope to remind customers of that special moment when they’ve given a gift at Christmas time that they know will be treasured forever.”

The Absolut champion in gay marketing says: On the dancefloor, everyone is equal. #THISISOURHOUSE ‘You may be black, you may be white, you may be Jew or Gentile... It don’t make a difference in our house.’ Back in 1987, Chuck Roberts expressed the values of house. Exactly thirty years later, we bring a reminder to these values. Roberts’ words reveal the fundamentals of house culture: equality, inclusivity, and the freedom of expression, no matter your religion, skin colour, sexual preference, or any other notion that could divide us. At Absolut, we’ve supported openness, freedom of expression and equality since the day we were founded. As the official sponsor of Amsterdam Dance Event, we want to raise awareness for these values in nightlife. When the city of Amsterdam opens its doors to dance enthusiasts from all over the world during the ADE, we make the statement: On the dancefloor, everyone is equal.

Shiseido - “The Party Bus – I can’t tell you that I love you“ (2018)
The Halloween commercial "Party Bus" won the gold certificate in the Epica advertising awards in the category Health and Beauty. as well as the main prize: the Film Grand Prix. Shiseido Japan has openly shown support for the LGBT community through makeup workshops for transgender people and as co-sponsors of Tokyo Pride. Upon receiving the award, Shiseido’s creative director Masato Kosukegawa said “In Japanese culture there is a strong conservative tendency, and stories of LGBT are not commonly told yet. I think this film was probably the first work by a major Japanese company to address LGBT in an advertisement.” He said the film was intended to reach out to young people, and show them the strength that makeup can lend them “in this confused and divided world”. The theme of The Party Bus is that the heroine isn’t brave enough to confess her feelings. Amidst a busy party on a bus, she gains confidence through a beautiful animatic sequence involving her own makeup, and shares a kiss with her female love interest at the end of the film. As the party bus rolls through the night, hidden feelings are unmasked. The pay-off: "Make up your own story"

HALLELUJAH - A CircusQueer Film Gay Love, Hate & Religion (2019)
A Film by MATTHEW RICHARDSON | @circusspinner Director of Creation | Concept + Choreography "My goal is to create performance art that inspires a kinder world for the queer community by challenging social norms, raising questions and starting conversations. I am creating a series of conceptual videos about gender identity, human nature, queer culture and how the world treats individuals who are “different” but exactly the same. The challenge for me is that video production can be very expensive, so please subscribe and stay connected through instagram/facebook to help make future projects possible! By creating performance art that evokes emotion and is undeniably beautiful, I hope to use these creations to deliver important social messages and open minds towards a kinder future. “Hallelujah” is a concept about choosing kindness, regardless of your religion or beliefs. It tells the story of an individual troubled by the hate in the world, and his partner who is trying to lift him up, and remind him that’s he is beautiful the way he is. This video is inspired by all the hate messages I received after my first creation “THE ARROW”… It is inspired by the protestors I see at every pride with signs of hate. Using religion as a weapon seems so backwards to me. My message is that religion should inspire more kindness and open arms, even towards those you may not understand." Bank of Australia and New Zealand - Hold My Hand (2017)
An advert from the Bank of Australia and New Zealand encouraged gay couples to be prouder of their relationships and to hold hands more confidently in public. The company, which supported Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the Auckland Pride Festival, said: “even in 2017, the simple act of holding hands is still difficult for some people – let’s change that and #HoldTight.” The clip features a number of same-sex couples hesitating over whether to hold hands when sceptical eyes might be watching. It’s a touching tribute to those couples who still find it difficult to be seen in public. ANZ Australia wants to change that, and believe the simple act of holding hands shouldn’t be anything to be afraid of.

French Connection - Fashion vs. Style (2006)
Back in 2006, the British advertising watchdog received an unusual large number of complaints about French Connection's cinema and TV ad campaign, which features a violent martial arts fight between two women as well as a lesbian kiss. It is directed by David Bowie's son Duncan Jones in the style of martial arts movies such as 'Kill Bill', under the slogan "fashion versus style". The fight includes a headbutt and clothes being ripped off, as well as the kiss. According to an ASA spokeswoman: "A lot of the complaints are about the violence but some are concerned about the sexual content, which refers to the lesbian kiss." The campaign aired to coincide with London Fashion Week. The ad is part of a £2m campaign by Beattie McGuiness Bungay for French Connection's spring and summer collection.

How I Felt When I Saw That Girl - Official Trailer (2019)
** switch on cc! ** Bollywood movies, by nature, are colorful - but now they are also becoming diverse. The first lesbian rom-com is out: Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (How I Felt When I Saw That Girl). There is matchmaking, pride, but luckily also gratuitous mass-dancing, word-play and jokes. Remarkably, the overwhelming majority of reactions was positive. "Some love stories are not simple, Sweety’s is one such story. She has to contend with her over-enthusiastic family that wants to get her married, a young writer who is completely smitten by her, a secret that she harbors close to her heart and ultimately the truth that her true love might not find acceptance in her family and society. Resolving these issues proves hilarious, touching & life changing. Welcome to the most Unexpected Romance of the year!" Female director Chopra Dhar created How I Felt When I Saw That Girl as a way to touch parents of LGBTQ children. She co-wrote the script with a trans woman. Previous Bollywood depictions of LGBTQ characters have been comedic and offensively stereotyped, reflecting cultural ignorance about same-sex love. Lead roles are played by well-known Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and her father is played by her real-life dad Anil Kapoor. #LetLoveBe Released on 1st Feb’2019 Starring: Anil Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Juhi Chawla, Abhishek Duhan, Seema Pahwa, Madhumalti, Brijendra Kala Directed by: Shelly Chopra Dhar Produced by: Vidhu Vinod Chopra Co-produced by: Fox Star Studios

McDonald's I'm Lovin It -- drag performer
In a familiar series of vignettes showing slices of life, this commercial, which is the first to run worldwide (over 100 countries, in 12 languages) for McDonald's in the "I'm Lovin' It" campaign, and shot in the Czech Republic, Brazil, South Africa and Malaysia, is intended to depict diversity and youth. The spot includes lots of "urban" shots with skateboarders, break dancers and streetguys with a boom box, funny shots of people with ice cream, a sports painted-face guy getting on the wrong bus, and cameo appearances and vocals by Justin Timberlake and The Neptunes, as well as professional skateboarder Tony Hawk. One scene shows an older man painting his face in a mirror, then has him popping out from behind a curtain in full drag, with a platinum blonde wig, a huge necklace, evening gown and white feather boa. As he does so, the rap song sings, " I could be anybody else." In Asia, the voiceover in Cantonese "rap" says: "I want to be myself, but when can I express this part of myself?" This commercial is cut slightly diferently for the U.S. -- removing the drag perfomer altogether and replacing him with a punk, mohawked father picking up his baby. Asked if it was sensitivity to homosexuality or transgender subject matter for the U.S. audience that lead to the switched scene, McDonald's spokesman Palmer Moody says, "I dont believe they felt that had anything to do with" the decision. Moody refers to the cross-dressed individual as "described to us not so much a man in drag, but a man in a 'lifestyle situation.' " "There is freedom among countries to pick and choose various shots," Moody says. "There is a pool of other shots for countries to intersperse and work within the look and feel. As far as here in the U.S., it was an artistic decision to include the 'Punk Daddy' instead." McDonald's has more than 13,500 local restaurants serving 26 million customers everyday. This campaign was the first shot entirely outside the U.S., and the first time the company used a non-U.S. ad agency (Heye & Partner is based in Germany) for work running here. Timberlake is to make cameo appearances throughout the campaign. The company says he will also "work with McDonald's on developing new and innovative ways to connect with today's culture and young consumers." McDonald's plans to sponsor the Justin Timberlake 2003 European tour.

Renault Clio - Gay Cop (2003)
Renault used a gay theme in their commercial for Clio in 2003. AdRespect: "A police siren sounds and a motorcycle cop dismounts from his bike after just pulling a vehicle over. Without a word, he starts writing in his pad, looking the vehicle up and down, walking very macho-ly from the front to the rear. The handsome man in the vehicle sits quietly and nervously. With a stone face behind his reflective sunglasses, the cop silently hands the driver his ticket and the cop rides away. The young man looks down mystified -- the "ticket" is instead the cop's phone number. "A French kiss is well-known. As Cyrano de Bergerac would say, it’s a pink apostrophe between the words je t’aime. An Italian kiss, on the other hand, is an allusion. Same-sex relationships are by no means a modern day concept, they're just finally beginning to get the respect and acceptance they've always deserved from this forward-thinking generation. Deutsche Bahn - The Fan
German railways Deutsche Bahn (DB) had this cute commercial in 2016. The ad, by BBDO Berlin, promotes 25 years of Deutsche Bahn's Intercity Express ICE trains, and tells the story of a devoted soccer fan who takes the train everywhere to follow his favorite player. He's such a fan, it seems, that he has a photo of himself and the player in his apartment and he's emotionally involved in every match. You might notice a couple of moments where he gets some unfriendly treatment from other fans, but that doesn't make sense until the end -- when he takes the train to meet the player at the station, and they walk off hand in hand. The tagline is "Connecting more than A and B." I think that the intention is very good, but still DB did not want to take any risks: the two men meet on the platform after a long separation, and they ... hug? The film, directed by Soup Films' Matt Smukler, went live on June 1, ahead of the Euro 2016 Championships, and clocked up more than 2.2 million YouTube views and over 4.1 million on Facebook.

At the end, one says, "We've got another leaf waiting for when we REALLY start getting along" -- perhaps implying marriage or having children. It was one of the first times an advertiser dealt with a gay relationship frankly in the US. (It was not the very first, however. One year earlier, a remarkable Danish commercial for Politiken newspaper was the first to depict a male couple together, with a passionate kiss.) It was not “gay vague” as many ads before or after this one were: the two men verbally declared to be each other’s partner. Virgin Mobile - Wyclef
Cell phone brand Virgin Mobile's ad features musician Wyclef Jean, who is arrested by a Southern U.S. sheriff and thrown into prison. As the inmates shower together, an enormous prisoner tells Jean to pick up a bar of soap on the floor -- a reference to prison rape. When it was just a few weeks old, the ad registered a few negative comments to the ITC -- something a Virgin Mobile spokesman jokingly refers to as "poor performance."

Sultana Bran - Goldie
An Australian campaign for the Sultana brand was accused of perpetuating “the stereotypical characteristics of gay males that have been criticized over the last decade, contributing to the denigration of the LGBTIQ community and in particular towards gay men,” because a goldfish in the commercial spoke in “camp voice and tones”. The Advertising Standards Board found that while the fish did speak in a ‘camp’ manner, it was “not sexualized and its gender was not clear”. As a result, the board ruled that the ad did not breach the Australian Association of National Advertisers’ Code of Ethics.
